i dont mean to put down MKD or any of the other games, MKD is awsome and i love it like no other but i still have some worries and conserns over the game. Being a martial artist myself, and having some knoledge of the history of different martial arts i am quite confused over the styles they have picked for some charaters. I know MK is set in an alternitive universe (or at least i think it is) but still. the following are examples of my prosicution on the subject.
The character Dairou in a first apperence seems to look like a shoulin monk of china. With the hair and having his first style being wing chun. But then his second style being escrima just doesnt fit! Escrima is from the phillipeans, and is a total contrast to Wing Chun. I expected to see another anceint kung fu style. My next rant is not so forthcoming, the character Ermac has ok styles even if they dont fit his somewhat japenese ninja appereance. But his weopon is just a let down. An axe. Come on what kind of ninja carrys around an axe. they should have gave him something like kamas or a kosuri-gama (spelled wrong). Next is kenshi. I have alot to say about him. tai chi deffenetly fits his blindness and persona, but judo and a katana, those dont make sense. Judo is a martial art deriveng from sumo, but in this style or Kenshi which is called judo i find barley any throws or sweeps, and for his weopon they should have changed it to a Tai Chi sword, a much more gracefull sword play art which fits his style. Kenshi was the name of a great japanese swords man, and im pretty sure not many japanese practiced Tai chi and carreid a japanese sword. Kobra is a cool character, but i dont agree with his kickboxing style. What did they run out of time to think of another style, why didnt they put in Tae Kwon Do, then he would have one Japanese and one Korean style like Chuck Norris. Even if the stance for Tae Kwon do is done poorly. No one sits in a double knife hand stance in TKD. And putting TKD as a native americans style is just tottaly wrong. Night wolf has two foreing styles, there is such a thing as Native american martial arts.
And scorpian has no japanese styles besides his sword to fit his ninja background. how bout ninjitsu for him. But no, we have to show him doeing korean hapkido which has no throws or sweeps even if that is what the martial art focuses on. But the game is still asome even with these falts, dont get me wrong, i love MKD.

99% agree although I like kickboxing for Kobra.
Well since I am American does this mean that I am not able to know Muy Thai, even though I have been practicing since I was 10? Or am I only allowed to box which I have been doing since I was 8?
Just because you are from one culture doesn't mean you can't learn a more suitable martial art from another culture. I do semi agree with the axe thing though, but it looks badass! Besides haven't you seen the Foot from the teenage mutant ninja turtles use the axes before

that is a good point, however there are not many martial arts that originated in america, besides JKD which i dont consider to be totally USA, some native american martial arts and boxing if you call that a martial art. However some one said that there should be a martail art expert on the MK team, there is, if you watch the history of MK or look at the unlockible videos if the martial arts that his the guy who is sopposed to be the expert. but he sounds and looks like a pot head. he's kind of chubbi to.

i'm not of asian decent in the slightest, so should i give up my black belt in tae kwan do?
so theres no native american martyial arts, so nightwolf shouldn't be in the game?
can people learn only a style that fits thier physical appearence and or personality?
i can see your points on a few things, but on others, no way.

dude, read my above message and calm down, of course american people practice foreign marital arts, we dont really have any of our own, but most japanese people dont practice chinese marital arts unless its thier secondary martial art.

I too am a martial artist...Shotokan Karate (Sub-Zero) for 11 years actually...yet I don't have a problem with the fighting styles...sure they're out there and not what you'd expect to find in the real world...but then again, it is only a video game, a video game where people shoot things outta their hands and fight a big dragon at the end...how much can you really expect?
I agree, Ive been practicing Shorin-Ryu Karate (Kobras first style) as well as the Bo-Jutsu (Jade's weapon) and Jo-jutsu (Bo Rai Cho's weapon) for about six years now. I like the way they represented the Bo and Jo, but some of the Shorin-Ryu moves, especially the uppercuts dont fit, and somehow I think they kinda gave it a bad rap; Saying that Kobra wasn't very disciplined, but to be a master of this style takes much discipline, more than Ive seen in some of the more mainstream styles, like Kung-Fu. But that's just my opinion
Yes, i agree, Midway needs a martial arts expert in his team. furthermore, they left a whole bunch of m.arts out of the game, like Tae Bo (dont laugh, i know its for aerobic), pankratión (ancient greek fighting), daito Ryu, Fudo-kan, Sen Fi-Haka Feeling, Goshindo, Feldenkrais (hey isnt that from Germany?), and the main unarmed hand fighting in the middle ages used by the knights templar-I forgot its name, but it had to do with utilizing armor and gauntlets as weapons.

second styles suck! special moves should be a style to them selves (couldn't you imagine subzero holding ice the entire battle and unleashing combos of freezing fury!) or you could have a second weapon. and Jax, A TONFA!!!??? that's Strykers weapon! Jax should have his gun and his arms as a style. gun combos could be a series of buts until he nocks them in the air and shoots them. or you could out right shoot someone, but your ammo is limited. Stryker, Sonya, Jax, and Fujin (crossbow) should have guns

Kai should have 3 styles and a 'sword of balance' a sword with a ribbon balanced on the blade.

They do have a martail arts expert: Carlos Pesina, he's been doing various arts for 25+ years. Check the Raiden bio vid.
thanks KingKabal, however, MK lacks the variety of styles. Check MKD for instance, it is filled with central or eastern Asian styles. I could imagine a character in MK who utilizes pankratión, or even capoueira (Eddie Gordo is toast with the dumbass Tekken series compared to MKDA and MKD).
This would also require characters with origins differing from the standard eastern habits. Like the knight idea, a vicious templar-noone seen a fighter with a heraldic shield as a weapon.

Well, my take on it is that all the characters are from different parts of the world, or from different realms, so anything can happen. It is a videogame after all. Plus some of them are supernatural, so they must have the power to handle some of the things they do.
As for Nightwolf having the styles he does, I always thought they didn't fit. Then again, he is a Shaman, so that would mean he has traveled the world, cause that's what good Shaman do. So, maybe he learned the styles on the way.
As for the person who said Kobra can't learn Shorin Ryu because he is supposed to be undisciplined, well there is such thing as a great thing being in the wrong hands. Kobra may have had the determination to learn it well, but also the wrong mindset with how to use it. Just my opinion.

Drahmin was good, though. only he should take off his mask when he switches to oni because of what his bio said
yes, Liu Kang should have Jeet Kune Do, since he was based on Bruce Lee in some way. The most unlogical choice were Shaolin Fist. the shaolin monks use Choy Lee Fut or Bak Sil Lum as self defence, alongside with the five main, and the following other animal styles.
Why didnt they include shiranavajramouthi as a style? it would replace Nitaras second style-both of the two are too familiar to each other.
Could anyone help me out with theese martiasl arts?
-hayinmon, mugen-tenshin, both of them were in Dead or Alive 2, i dunno if they are for real or just fiction, and the chineese Xinghyi Liuhe Quan

Oh God! One person, whom actually sounds like he knows what he's talking about, Says he's a martial artist and now everyone here is a Martial Arts master of some sort.... Give me a Break!
No, but i have spent a good deal of time examining various martial arts. Weel, honestly, I have no practical experience only literature what everyone could have. Say, Germandrache, have you found out from where did Feldenkrais originate from?
I'm not far from your homeland, just a little bit to the southeast from you.
Guess it.
