Ive seen several threads around on characters being unlocked in Konquest through rescue missions and other similar scenarios. All good ideas they were. But what about the death match between you and your unlockable character? Super Smash Bros Melee used this ploy well, as did Tekken 3 in some cases. You had to complete certain tasks and then fight your unlockable character and defeat them to unlock them. MKD could use it to great effect - in the Light/Dark (or Yin-Yang) world!
The basic emphasis of this level is of course the change between the Light and Dark realms of good and evil. Its a perfect setting for all MK characters and the switch between realms is the key to unlocking the other characters, hurting them and health recovery. Also, certain conditions must be met when fighting the characters. Youll see these now in the following ideas.
Unlock Kitana Achieve a win in the Light realm. You must use your characters weapon for the majority of the fight to show Kitana your weapon skills. Once the match is over, Kitana will appear via a portal and challenge you. You must defeat her using only your weapon style and special moves. She will only use her weapon and specials and show you the might of the Steel Fan. Defeat her to unlock her.
Unlock Raiden Complete the Thunder Gods Test! You must achieve a victory in the Light realm in under 30 seconds with a Flawless Victory. Raiden will descend from the skies from a lightning bolt and challenge you to a match. However, he will be at Max difficulty (regardless of what setting your on)! The Thunder God will test you! Be prepared! Defeat him to unlock him.
Unlock Shang Tsung Achieve a win in the Dark realm. Shang will appear and challenge you! Damage is only inflicted on him whilst you are in the Light realm. Upon returning to the Dark realm, Shang will take your previous opponents soul to heal himself slightly. Upon other returns to the Dark Realm, he will tap into the energies of that realm to heal himself a little. Defeat him to unlock him.
Unlock Quan Chi Achieve a win in the Dark realm in less than 30 seconds. Quan will appear and challenge you. Deathtraps are the only means in which he can be killed or hurt. You gain a defence boost to help you. Quan now has the ability to teleport, so be careful in how you position yourselves with the deathtraps!
Can you imagine him teleporting just as you are about to deliver the blow that will launch him into a death trap! That would be so frustrating!
Heres where it gets complicated.
Unlock Liu Kangs Spirit Achieve a win in the Light realm. You must achieve a double flawless! From the energies of this realm will give birth to Liu Kangs spirit who will challenge you to a fight! The even more frustrating catch Consecutive attacks/combos can only inflict damage in the opposing realm! An example is you do a 5 hit combo straight away in the Light realm. Your next set of hits will inflict no damage until you reach the Dark Realm. A single hit in the Dark Realm is executed and you must wait now until you reach the Light realm for further damage! Spirit Kang also regains a small amount of health on the good side and deathtraps are removed. When Spirit Kang reaches 99% - the consecutive hits rule is removed. The KO blow must be performed in the Dark Realm.
Because of the difficulty of this, you will receive a defence and attack boost.
Unlock Zombie Kang See Spirit Kang, but alternate the realms. All effects in the Dark Realm are now in the Light realm and vice versa. The KO blow must be in the Light realm.
Those are just some of my ideas.
Sound easy? Well, for those cocky peeps amongst yourselves, maybe a harder difficulty could be added for some matches. Namely Max2! Remember MK2s special character properties? Some of those abilities could be given to the characters along with more conditions. So Kitana could have enhanced speed. Raiden could have a projectile immunity. Shang could receive no damage from juggle combos. Spirit Kang can be immune to weapon attacks. Low attacks could cause more damage. Throws could be disabled.
To ensure that youre not completely overpowered, your character could gain these abilities in their alignments realm. So if you were playing as Sub-Zero, youd get the boosted speed in the Light realm if you were fighting against someone with that trait. Neutral characters would have the effects given to them at random in any realm.
So what do you think? Any ideas?

SSBM is my all time favourite game. Having unlockable ideas from it would be awesome.
I would love to unlock a secret character by fighting Him/Her first.
Another way you should be able to unlock characters is by beating the CPU in Puzzle Kombat and Chess Kombat on VERY HARD.
Hints through levels and Arenas would be great to. For an example, there could be a level that has lightning strike extremely fast once in each round. When the lightning flashes, you would have to push "Up and Start" or something to fight Rain. Rain could also appear before fights and give hints on how to fight him by saying things like "Watch the lightning" and "A move of mine".
I'll have more examples of these later on.

Can I ask where everyone got the idea that Liu Kang's spirit and the Liu Kang zombie are two different characters? I mean, wouldn't you just think that it is an alternate and not two different characters. Two different characters would be a waste of space for other possible people.

Awesome ideas! I've always thought that they will incorporate unlocking a character by defeating Chess or Puzzle Kombat on Very Hard. Although, with Chess Kombat having exclusive backgrounds, maybe those would be unlocked.
I love the lightning idea! It's simple and great!

It's just an assumption, dude! They could be alt costumes or seperate characters. No one can say either idea is wrong at this moment in time so any of the two ideas is used.
Oh, ok, got ya. Well on subject though, I would much rather it be unlocked that way. I think that's a great idea tgrant. But you will always have someone complaining if they are trying to unlock Quan Chi and they just can't beat them. And if you unlock characters that way, then it would defeat the point of the Krypt.
If you want my opinion on unlocking people in Konquest, I think it's people that you unlock that you see in Konquest(ie:Rain, Kitana, etc.). I really don't think that you would see someone like Kabal in Konquest or Liu Kang and that's how you unlock him.
P.S. I also think that Rain may be unlockable now, just cause Steve whatever mentioned him in that interview. I don't see any other reason that you would mention a specific character if he wasn't important to the game, so Rain may be unlockable after all.

I understand. I guess skill would definitely be tested in the match against Quan. The Krypt could also be used for other things. Not all characters have to be unlocked on this stage. Some could be saved for Konquest and the Krypt.
I agree that characters we see in Konquest may possibly be unlockable. And Rain could very well be one of them!
wow tgrant another great idea.. i would love to c that be implemented....it makes it fun to unlock characters unlike mkda where u just collect coins to unlock people...u know i actually like the idea of 2 different liu kangs (hehe im starting to like him now cuse im now a great liu kang player in mk2..hehe)the zombie 1 could actually be a stray spirt that entered his dead corpse.. t5he spirt 1 is liu and he will be trying to get his body back..the 2 "liu's" will have separate moves and what not..i cant wait to c the transparent liu kang..i also think smoke will be transparent in some areas of his body..
oh and on the topic of coins..i think the coins purpose in mkd, should be a way to c how good ur opponnet is vs others..like u start off w/ like 100 coins then w/ every win or loss online u gain or lose coins..that way if u face some 1 w/ 10,000 coins u'll know they r good..that way the coins will have a good purpose in the game.. now w/ coins being used for online play i think we should have to now use keys to open up the koffins in the krypt..the way we get the keys is through the konquest mode..we'll have to search all over the place to get keys...that way konquest mode and the krypt kinda intertwine.... may be in the konquest mode if u want to unlock a character,u havr to first meet them in konquest mode, then perform whatever task they ask of u. then they;ll give u a key..the key will be use to unlock the koffin he/she is in....
ANYWAY im bored and i was just brain storming..

I really like all this idea. It seems really fun, sadly I have never played that game so I dont fully know it.
Actually, I think hidden characters should be discovered in 2 ways, the one you just said, and KONQUEST.
You see, it sounds more difficult and fun to search a whole gigantic realm in specific places and hour times instead of just knowing a hidden character awaits you in the last realm.
The whole shocking feeling you get when you discover someone by just coincidence or pure luck is so good conquest needs to have at least 2 hidden characters in each realm.
I say both styles should be used.
Excellent idea.

Damn home those are sum sweeet ideas.
Hopefully things like that are in there ut I also hope that when you unlock characters in Konquest, you dont have to fight them 1 on 1 but must complete a series of missions. Like for example, you complete a mission in Konquest for Bo Rai Cho, then he tells you to go visit sum guy at sum time on the harbor or mountains. But to get by you must find something for the person gaurding these areas and this object is very difficult to find. So anyway when you get by and go to the mountains, there is another person. A famous martial artist training and decides to train you as well. So after the training, he says your a worthy student and gives you a key. A special key that only can be used to unlock 1 thing then dissappers. And before you leave, he says that this key will open you the gateway to hell....
Anyway yeah theres my idea. I hope unlocking characters is like that or something like the Light Dark ideas.
Very cool BTW.

I think it's an excellent idea to be challenged by the characters you'r expecting to be unlocked, as it must be a privilege and an honor to use them, so as any privilege you must prove your skills and to see if you're of worth them.
IMO the charaters you picked tg are great for the scenario descrived as the Ying/Yang, but i would like to have the chance as well to unlock characters via Chess Kombat and or Puzzle Kombat, or maybe in ga,e secrets, such as pressing some cominations and so.
Great thread as always tg!

Not at all! Im a Metroid Prime fan and know of the sequel. However, the Light/Dark world is an actual level in MKD. The idea was a sudden toght as Ive seen some threads on unlocking characters and I wanted to devise a new way of doing so. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes ahd nothing to do with it. And I havent seen the trailer for it.

Agreed! I wouldnt want this idea to be the entire basis of unlocking characters. Itd just be a nice alternate method. I also agree that searching other realms for all its secrets is fun. Konquest should provide us with that.
Super Smash Bros Melle is a great game. Play it when you can man!
And thanks man!

no the konquest mode is a much better place to be unlocking characters. some ones would be cool to be unlocked in the arcade mode like the way for fighting reptile in mk1 not things like for unlocking moloch you must do 2 flips land with one feet sing a christmas song and do a lil ballet dancing.

Thanks alot, bro! I like what you said about using the unlockable characters being a privilege. That is true and I agree that we must earn it!
I too want the chance to unlock characters via chess Kombat and Puzzle Kombat. Hopefully, we can unlock stages there too.

Ok, dude. I respect your opinion. This way probably wouldnt appeal to all, but I still think itd add a nice variety in the unlocking procedure. Thanks for the honest opinion.

Love the idea! I miss the old days when hidden characters had to be earned. With most modern games, all you need to do is go to gamefaqs and every aspect of the game is delivered to ya over a red-carpet. Smash Bros Melee revived this mode of play, and the reason it would work so good for MK is because of the vast amount of characters, which very few games could even try to measure with.
And the whole light/dark world thing reminds me of Zelda a bit. One would start the quest in the light world, but eventually would have to switch to the dark world(same exact enviroment, but different people and obstacles) to obtain what was needed. I think this would give MK that extra amount of depth that Boon was aiming for in Konquest.

I agree with what you've said, bro. The depth your talking about could be added simply and easily. Even if it isn't the Light/Dark world, they could use other stages to try and inplement an idea similar to this.
I'm happy that you liked the idea too! Thanks bro!

I think I read that too. Time could play a part in unlocking characters on the Light/Dark world. It could use the internal clock on the consoles to keep track of the time and you could accidentally unlock or trigger clues that lead to finding the characters. Or you could trigger a battle with one of them.
