Alright,I was digging through my old gaming magazines yesterday, and I remembered seeing a preview of Deception in one of them. The article was sprinkled with little bits of concept art here and there, and there was one that was particularly curious. The thing is,no matter how much I searched,I couldn't find the magazine it was in,so I'm just going to describe it to the best of my knowledge.
Basically, the picture showed a possible snow cavern arena, with the floor being a thick sheet of ice. Judging from the picture,it was possible to take the battle to a lower area. However,it was possible to knock the opponent even further down. That's where the actual deathtrap was located. Apparently, after falling to the bottom, the unlucky sap would be eaten by what I can only describe as an enormous pasty-white freaky-looking worm fish thingy. I haven't seen that piece of offart ever since.
Can anyone confirm which magazine was this thing featured in? It was obviously between the releases of MKDA and MKD,so it was something in the 2002-2004 timespan. Better yet,can anybody post the actual page scan? Thank you.

Game Informer, May 2004, page 56.

As regards the scans, they're not allowed here.

You're welcome wink

Sir,a winner is you. =)
*twenty minutes later*
God fucking dammit,I dug through my entire stash and it seems I've lost this particular issue.
Any scans? For the sake of the whole copyright thing, can anybody at least crop that particular picture from the page scan and post it here? Or is that illegal too?

It's just as awesome as I remember. =)
Thank you very much. Are there any other bits of offart there that haven't shown up anywhere else?

Great thread. I remember this too when I saw this in the Game Informer issue. I really loved the concept and hope it shows up in a future MK.

That is something that would be new to MK, there really aren't any arenas like that in any of the older games, and it's something I've always wanted to see (for a victim to fall to his death by getting eatten by a giant creature with big teeth).

This consistently pisses me off about the MK games. Pretty much every time the team tries to implement some sort of environmental hazard or a deathtrap involving some sort of creatures,it inevitably gets canned.

There was supposed to be that Octo Garden arena in MK4. Never made it.
If the Swampland arena ever made it into into MKDA,there was a possibility that the birdbats perched on the skeletons would attack the players in some way. LOL,TIME OUT.
One of the earlier MKDA sketches involved some sort of spider-based arena. I mean, you really can't get any more badass than giant fucking spiders. Never even made it past the sketch stage.
MKD was supposed to have this. I mean, just imagining that enormous fish thingy ripping people apart makes me ecstatic. The sketch didn't even make it into the coffins. -_-
The red stained glass in the middle of the Bug Lair was also supposed to be a deathtrap. After breaking it,the played would supposedly be attacked and devoured alive by hundreds of bugs. It was even mentioned in the previews and everything. What the hell happened to that?
Goro's Lair in MKA was supposed to have the victim drop into the lower areas, where he would get mauled by a pack of hungry oni. With the way MKA was rushed,I can only guess that they didn't have time to implement it.
Last but certainly not least, the giant snake statue at Reptile's Lair was supposed to be an actual giant goddamned snake. I assume they didn't have time to properly animate it. -_-

Well,at the very least we got those bizarre pirahna clownfishes at Ying-Yang Island and the little rat which drags away your dismembered appandage after you fall through the floor in the Belltower. Plus,Shaolin Monks was actually nice enough to finally bestow upon us the awesomeness that are the man-eating trees in action. I guess that's something.

That is true about the red pane glass and when it breaks, a bunch of beetles are supposed to eat you up, I remember that clearly. Well in the actual game you just get knocked through it and the bugs do come out, but nothing happens. I thought that would've been tight if they actually implemented the bug death trap.

The grinders from the Red Dragon Temple (MKD) were supposed to be a deathtrap where you get knocked through the glass and into the grinders below.

My favorite concept of the death traps that didn't make it in any of the games is definitely that ice worm. I would love to see that in MK8.
