wtf? what baraka did was not a hari-kiri. a hari-kiri is what samurai's used to do when they committed suicide: every samurai had a special type of dagger (or small sword, i don't know) that they only used once in their life. they used it to commit suicide, but there was only one way to do it. u had to stab yourself in the stomach and cut your stomach in kind of a triangular shape (your guts would drop and shit). and they also had a person standing behind them with a sword so that once they finish the hari-kiri, that person would cut their head off, reducing pain.
so it's really gay that midway didn't read a book before making a game on somethin they don't know about. that's the only thing i don't like bout the next game.

p.s. o and i'm not japanese or anything, i jus like samurais.

hari kari is just dumbed down to mean honorable suicide, its exact meaning would just get in the way of of making them different

the reason its not the traditional hai-kari is because not all the character have swords!!! and there not all japanese, and as for that none of the past mk characters even used Akido, soooooo Y would they do a traditional Hari-Kari if they aren't really samauri, Akido or not.

It would be dead boring and very unoriginal if every character pulled out a sword and stabbed themself in the stomache anyway.tongue

I'm glad how they came up with the idea of each character having there own unique Hari-kiri.

why does everybody have to be so technical with everything, look at it as a broad overview and take it for what it's worth rather than critique it down to its barest essentials. I mean come on already, this is childish. Every thread anymore has to have someone either try to prove they know something they dont or have somebody take something and make it sem like it is totally wrong. Leave it as is. Its a cool naem and thats that.

some people really need to just stfu. no matter what they do all these "experts" about every topic show up and just bitch, bitch, bitch. be elated you now have a new way to finish a match. the term in modern times has become accepted as meaning the same thing as suicide. mayhaps they simply did not like the word suicide and chose another close to the meaning. i mean seriously take your fingers out of your butt once in a while and put them om a game controller and you might actually have fun playing games instead of nit-picking every damn thing they do.

Midway wasnt trying to recreate what samurais did so much as make it more fun for the victim during a fatality time. i like it better this way rather than having everyone magically carry around small swords lol...im not too sure why your overreacting about this detail just because it isnt exactly what the name says but it is a hari kiri for the most part. i mean hari kiris were basically suicide right? well midway is just being more creative with it lol...welcome to MK online and while your here at least have a good time and try to relax some tongue

i was jus sayin that it's the wrong term. so many ppl on this site bitch about everything and this is the only bad thing i've ever said about this game. and to those ppl who know somethin about samurais, sayin that a hari-kiri is the same thing as a suicide is like saying that jumping is the same as crouching. so before u talk shit look at my other posts (they're all positive) and then educate yourself about the topic instead of looking for people that u can flame for no fucking reason.
p.s. by the way i love the idea of being able to kill yourself before the opponent kills u, i've been excited about it since E3.

It May not entirely be a Suicide, but dude, its just a game, plus its Bassicaly a Suicide...

Hara Kiri: Dont know much about it, but according to you, they kill themselves with some sword

Suicide: They Kill themselves

Sounds Similar enough for me!

Incorrect as it is, Hara-Kiri is certainly a better term than Suicidality or something along those lines.

the whole reason hari kiri is named that is for the most part cuz of the shape that they make while cutting their stomach. so it has little to do with it being a suicide. and i'm not overreacting, it's just that they try to be accurate with all the fighting styles and their historical values and yet they totally missuse a term like this.

Yeah, "Suicidality" would be a ridiculous term...

And then, if all the characters committed suicide in the same way, it would be neither original, nor interesting... And originality, Midway is going to have to worry proof, to imagine at least 24 types of different suicides... I don't know why, I'me sure that it will go to have there "doubloons" yet... :/

I bet Suicidality! or something like that would have the PTA pooping on this game hardcore. Hari Kiri sounds kind of funny though.

I bet they're impossible to pull off with my friends though. None of my friends ever do fatalities; they don't know them so they just uppercut or stab the guy with their sword. I probably won't be able to enter the combination in before that happens.

does the opponent have to start a fatality in order for u to do a hari kiri? cuz it didn't look like that in the trailer. the other guy was jus sittin there. i think u can do it whenever u lose and it says finish him.

I'm certainly not doubting you, dude. But when I think about all the terms that MK has abused over the years...does one more really make that much of an impact? Misuse of real-world terms is a Mortal Kombat legacy. wink

i think that if the good ol folks at mortal kombat took enough time to make sure that the way ppl fought was an authentic style i think they would know a thing or two about hari kiri's. i like the fact that you can kind of stick it to your opponent now and steal their kill. better than just sitting there waiting for the axe.

Yes technicaly it is, and yes, they do.
You're right.

There was some discussion about this a short while back, and i think everybody just figured they used the term loosely, simpley because it sounds more authentic and flashy than something along the lines of suicide or suicidality or whatever.
The audience Mortal Kombat is aimed at (aka "casual gamers") probably won't know any better anyway. (which is almost more reason to get it correct in my opinion. It may only be misinforming people in a minor way, but it's still misinformation)

MK247 it is not even worth your time and effort to try to get people to change there opinions. Hara Kari= A real slang Japanese term for STOMACH CUT. I called my buddy in Japan and he said the words hara hari are used by peasents or lower class people. There is another name they use to mean the same thing But my Japanese sucks. We as americans use the word suicide. In japan it was done to save face. A real Samurai could never face defeat. So they killed themselves by there own blade instead of the enemy killing them. So the MK way is not a traditional Samurai death, But it is the american HARA KARI. To take your self out before the enemy can. The words are used inplace of the word suicide. Why because if they used that word in america and a person bought the game and killed themself, the game would be banned. The MK staff is just being carefull. Besides not all things translate from Japanese to english the same way. If I were to say SATAN or THE DEVIL here in america it would mean, A fallen angel from heaven. In Japan it would mean one of hundreds of there devils satans or demons or oni. It would be like me saying GHOST here. If you want a for instance think street fighter. AKUMA OR GOUKI in Japan it means a unreal type of person taken over by a demon. An OGER. In america it translates wrong, it means magnificant demon or THE SATAN. We are getting into an Opinion battle for the wrong reason. The guy that started this thread does not like the way MK is useing the term Hara Kari. Thats his opinion because he like the Japanese traditional Samurai. We like it because we get to do suicides and have it called something close to the Japanese words STOMACH CUT. And we see the words meaning to take yourself out. It's just Opinions. I like this idea no matter what they call it. They could say CRANBERRY JUICE COCKTAIL DEATH and I would still think it was smooth as butter. But get one thing straight I love to hate MK bashers and If you attack my friend MK247 after he posts his opinion, I will be right there to back him up. So let's just do what he said from the start. Take it for what it is. Now I am going back to my normal thread where everyone is gald to see you, and not many people there are negative. DSB
