Theres a pretty obvious explanation for superman being weakened (not that the mk team seems to give a rats ass about storyline lately).
Supermans power comes from the suns rays (powerful on earth due to a yellow sun, no special powers back on krypton due to an older red sun).
All Boon needs to say is that Outworlds sun is somewhere in between... problem solved.

i like the amulet idea. it would make sense. and the sun idea sounds good too, maybe both will be used. i'm sure the amulet will be taken from quanchi, because it would be weird having one character with special attributes.

maybe in the MK arcade mode, whoever you pick obtains the amulet in a way, then superman would be the final boss. use the amulet to bring him down to your level, and then attack him.

for dc's side, maybe the final boss would be shang tsung or somebody (just throwing ideas around) and the DC character does something to shang tsungs soul supply and thus brings him down to their level, but something special would have to be done about superman.....hope ed doesn't fuck this up......it would be very easy too.

i'm sure a better idea can be thought up for the DC side, but i dunno

If they didn't care for the storyline, then they wouldn't have started from scratch...but whatever lol. Boon and DC have got their shit straight anyway and will make a nice story I'm sure.
