Interesting...nice find there. I don't know anything off hand that would relate to Hotaru and a firefly. Maybe we should do some research on the mythology of fireflies. My theory however is that Hotaru is a general of the Dragon King's army. We have a lot of other leaders in this game, and we all know that the villain needs a few baddies that are close to him.

If there are animalities he'll turn to a giant Firefly and will eat the opponent.

Hotaru is a very stupid name for them to give to a MALE general. Hotaru is a female name in Japan, it makes no sense for them to give it to a male.

it looks like quan chis hechmen or something because quan chis sign is a kind of a spider so fire fly is kind of familiar
.if hotaru is quan chi hench men it would be quite interesting because now quan chi has more people to defend him from scorpion

Maybe that would have some kind of connection to Kitana? After all she just lost Liu Kang.

I actually heard someone mention this before, and incorporated it into my story for Hotaru in the official thread. I think it might be relavent to his story.

I had a quick search and I came up with some things to do with fireflies in Japanese mythology. Some were fireflies representing gods. Another talked about the "God of Light" (Maybe Ashrah might have something to do with this?), but the one that sprung into my mind the most was a folk belief that fireflies were the souls of dead warriors.

Hotaru being a warrior, his name meaning firefly, and Mortal Kombat dealing a lot with souls, it makes a lot of sense. It seems he could play a part with a sorceror then. Maybe even an Oni?

Yeah, but look at 'Katana.' I mean, who in Japan would name their daughter 'Katana?'

It's all about how cool it sounds I guess. smile

Well, at least it's not nearly as bad as what Midway did with naming Fujin (meaning "Mrs" in Japanese).

I think they were trying for Fuijin the Shinto god of wind, and goofed respelling the name.

Hotaru is a female name used a lot in anime shows. It's strange to see a name put with a dude who looks some what like a samaruai. Hotaru looks like a mix of Youtimitu(tekken/sc)(sp) and Quan Chi(mk...duh). I hope they can pull something cool of with him, but I'm looking foward to the female Raiden lol.

I mentioned the meaning of the names before--maybe in one of the lengthy posts about magazines. Interesting to me is that Hotaru is often a name for women in Japan--actresses, one in Sailor Moon, even. Has anybody noticed that Hotaru has flag-like wings?

Vampie? Maybe. I think it would be cool to have another vampire. Quite frankly I think to furthur storylines, they need another vampire.
