Because the majority of the returning characters, Mileena, Baraka, N00b, Ermac, Sindel and Nightwolf and all other returning characters that weren't in MKDA are gonna feel as if they are completely new characters.

Ermac for example can now be considered sorta of a new character, new moves, new combos and an amazing new look. In reality, Midway is giving us MORE 'new' characters than you think.

I'm glad they are having more returning characters as well. MK has a HUGE library to pick characters from. Each of these characters can be remade, revamped with a new look, new moves and new styles and they would feel just as good as a completely new character.

Hopefully Quan Chi and Shao Kahn are "returning" characters. :)

I made a topic about this too. I disagree with so many new characters. I would rather characters return.

Well i guess its fairly decent. Afterall, i'm really happy to see baraka and noob return, ermac is also a cool character. I just hope they include smoke in somehow. Hopefully the new characters arent characters boring like hsu hao and li mei. I want them to have good potential.

Your theory is somewhat reasonable i guess.

Well we have already 9 returning characters:

Sindel
Ermac
Baraka
Night Wolf
Sub Zero
Scorpion
Mileena
N00b Saibot
Kenshi

So we have another 7 returning characters to go. My prediction is:

Shao Kahn
Quan Chi
Sektor/Cyber Smoke or Cyrax (only one of these guys will return)
Frost
Sareena
Rayden
Sonya
Kitana
Kano/Liu Kang (depending on the ending)
Mavado (or another Red Dragon member)

I wish they would have more returning chars then new, because they r taking a risk with new char, when with returs ones they already know if ppl like them or not. Also i hope the new chars have a good Mk feel to them because i felt like Li Mei didnt belong, she seemed like a Tekken fighter or summtin.

I HATE NEW CHARACTERS!!! I dont mind having 2 or 4. But if they have like 8-10 thats just too much. There are already so many MK characters out there that are really good that havent been in a new game in so long. IMO most of the new characters from MKDA sucked. The ones i enjoyed were only FROST, KENSHI, LI MEI (even though she was a mileena rip-off with her sai weapon). I just want returning characters!!!

I like having new characters in fighting games. But, I think 8 is too much. I say 5 to 6 is good. Maybe even less for MK because of all the classic characters that they can bring back. But im pretty optimistic about MKD. I think its gonna be awesome.

I think 60% of the characters should be returning and 40% new, this should apply to most if not all fighting games. The 60% are composed of the most wanted/well liked/most relevant characters while the 40% are characters that have potential to become relevant/wanted/well-liked. MKD has it right since less than 50% of the characters are new.
3-5 new characters would be best
like the ppl before me said MK has a huge library of characters. Why not bring some of them back ?

Why do people keep calling Li Mei a Mileena character just because she had Sais?

Just remember that at one point, every character that you like has been a new character.

8 or 9 new characters? I really, really doubt that. I don't think we're going to get more than five new characters. At least I hope we don't. Four is plenty, really. For almos every mk game after MK2, I disliked more than half the new characters. The only gems we got from the last game were Kenshi, Nitara, and Li Mei. Everyone else was weak.

I second that. I actually liked her character.

MK usually introduces a min. of 7 charachters per game, never more than 8 or 9 so i don't know what you guys are talking about.

I think 7 is a good number, 8/9 is borderline too much.

Gamespot said that MKD will have 8 new characters.

The number of new characters should be relative to the number of returning characters. 16 returning characters and 8 new characters, that ratio is excellent.

I understand, but i don't know why people are saying "only 8/9" when there haven't been more than 8 or 9 new charachters introduced in any past installment.

Well they could always pull off a Tekken. Introduce 3 new characters per game but make secondary rip offs of them so it appears they actually put in 6 characters. I always hated that about Tekken.

Lets take a look at MK1 if we can. 7 playable characters. Now in MK2 all returned in some way or another, but only 5 originals were playable. So that left us with 7 new characters totaling 12 playable characters. I think that formula worked well. 7 new characters, but they made enough changes to the original 5 that they all felt like new characters.

Now MK3, 5 retruning playable characters from MK2. 2 returning characters from MK1. 8 new characters (including smoke), giving us a total of 15 characters.

So it's not at all uncommon for Boon to add 7-8 new characters per MK. I'd be happy with 6 as long as they give the reurning characters some new moves and toys to play with.

But I do agree with the above poster, Ermac, Mileena, Baraka, Noob, they are all going to feel like new characters. So in actuallity we are getting alot more than usual if you look at it that way.

this is a long shot, but maybe when they say "new" they mean "NOT in Deadly Allience" making meleena , baraka, noob, sindel, ermac, and the other 2 new charaters, the "NEW" people. Which would leave roughly 2 more new people that we have not seen, plus they probably are not counting the boss as a new character since he will most likely not be playable.
