In a game where it appears that the objective is identity between the characters, they have failed to do that. Examples:
Noob-Smoke is a perfect example. Could have been 2 great stand-alone characters with awesome stories, but no. they have to be the sub-boss (which basically means no story of their own) AND 1 character.
Li Mei: Goes from underdog fighting to save her people to just another bodyguard of the bad guy. See also Kitana and Raiden (possibly)
Mileena/Baraka: Sure there's the gender difference, but they have practically the same face, the same alignment, as well as the same motive (or so we think). IMO it would have been better if one was the anti-other.
Ermac/Kenshi: Aside from the weapons and stances, you have two characters with practically the same specials and I think it's safe to assume that they will have very similar fatalities as well. Also, the teacher-student thing has been done (bo' rai cho-kung lao/liu kang)
Kira: Wow. Easily could have been a cool character with the whole female Black Dragon premise. But then they had to give her the specials of Kano AND Sonya. Now, I don't know your opinions, but that's laziness if I've ever seen it.
Kobra: Looks too similar to Johnny Cage in the screens I've seen for my taste.
Hotaru: Another character fighting for his own purpose who has mistakenly aligned with the baddie. See also Scorpion.
Dairou/Darrius (forget which, but I think Dairou): One of them looks like a psuedo-Kung Lao without the hat. On a side note, Darrius is the next in the "add black guy so we don't get called racist" scheme.
Sub-Zero: If Frost is in Deception, then he must be added here. Come on, a female that looks almost exactly like Sub-Zero and has moves that were discarded in DA? Please, Boon. Get off your lazy ass and put some originality into this series.
Now, this is not to say that these characters are not awesome (because ermac, hotaru, and smoke especially look pretty bitchin) but IMO there are just way too many similarities between certain characters.

My advice is wait for the game and let their stories play out. Then you'll see similarities fade and maybe some other show. In the end, there is alwasy a difference.

I agree with moseph. Frost was one of the worst ideas ever, and Dairou almost looks exactly like a native american warrior like Nitewolf. I disagree with you on Kobra and Darrius as they are looking phenomenol.

Well, I haven't seen Darrius in action, nor have I seen Dairou. I based that off of the select screen.

Good as in her alignment or good as in her fighting abilities? Her alignment, well in real life it's good, but I do believe that she still has some bad in her after being controlled by the Dragon King. I dunno if it was true or not but I heard somewhere that she did somehow break free of their control I think right after Onaga's army was revived, but a part of her still sides with him or something. I dunno, I ain't too sure.

I find that hard to believe IMO since one of her costumes shows her wearing Dragon armor.

Li Mei was about to become one of the DK's soldier until Bo Rai Cho interupted the soul transfer. But by saving her, her soul is contaminated by the mummified soldier, so every now and then, she has this strange feeling inside of her, telling her that she need to do something important, serving the DK.

she is not wearing the Dragon armor. In one of my OLDEST thread about Li Mei, The_Truth made it all clear about the armor.
The_Truth wrote this: the armor worn by the DK's army is completely different than the armor worn by Li Mei. It's different in it's overal style (Li Mei's is more Chinese looking, like something you'd see in Dynasty Warriors) whereas the DK's army's armor looks more Japanese (more Samurai-esque). The color schemes are also way off.

It's funny that the last time I said "wait until the game comes out before forming a final opinion" people accused me of trying to stop people from discussing. Nice to see how people have dual opinions regarding of who posts the "wait until it comes out" comment.
PS: This is not directed to tgrant I just quoted his response to make an analogy with what I replied in another post. Anyway, this is also off-topic so please disregard this message and go on with your lives. Cheers.

Her armor isn't the same as the armor of Onaga's soldiers. Not even close.

When you have around 50 characters there will be some characters that seem similair. You can go anyway with that. OMGWTF!!! Scorpion and Subzero both dress the same in MK1 xept for colors!!! lack of identity!!!1 :OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Dude, I was talking about concept behind the characters for the most part, not how they dress... don't judge a book by it's cover

You're the one that did that bud. No one else did, they just said that her outfit is not a reason like you seemed to think.

Yeah but the problem now is that Dairou almost exactly resembles him as a native american warrior.

To me he looks as though through his outfit. He sort of resembles the last of the mohicans in my opinion.
