There is a line in the Mortal Kombat world: a line that seperates OLD characters and NEW characters.

Oldies are Goodies: Old characters returning bring about a familiar feeling. Their appearance alone is a reassurance that the game will feel similar and not stray too far off the formula.

Newbies are Questionable: When NEW characters are introduced, most people get excited, but at the same time must question why? they are "replacing" a certain character.

True though, why fix something if it isn't broken? and that is the philosophy of returning characters. MK just wouldn't FEEL right without Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and a few others. And to be honest, DA was awesome because they brought back returning favorites which gave us that warm fuzzy feeling playing as your fav. character in 3-D.

But, remember that DA also gave us Kenshi (one of my personal fav.s) and Frost, Bo Rai, Li Mei.

My point is, is that I am looking forward to Hotaru, Asrah, Kobra as well as all the others. And i'm sure most of you are too. But don't get all angry IF a certain character DOESN"T come back, or if one DOES come back.

A lot of people (including myself) still don't like Bo Rai Cho and Li Mei. I know a LOT of people also don't like Frost. Only person who I know was an "instant fav" in DA was Kenshi, which I thought was sort of ruined with him becoming part of the Special Forces.

Biggest beef I have with new characters is that there could be better RETURNING characters to finish their storylines. But, since Boon says there will about 35 (was that it? I'm not sure) I still have my hopes up that people will get to finish their storylines (eg: Mavado, Sektor, Sareena).
When I first saw pics of Mavado, I really didn't like him in the slightest, but he turned out to be one of my best fighters (Not just in MK: DA, I mean overall)

What i'm saying is so far im not all that keen on the new characters, I usually have a hard time accepting new charaters in fact. I have to get to grips with then for quite a while. I don't know why, but thats the way I am

For me, new characters are just another page in the on-going history of Mortal Kombat. Everyone has that one favorite old character but, you should always have an open mind in accepting new characters. If you like their storyline and moves or you dont, is just your opinion.

Anyway, I dont have a problem with the new characters. They are something you just have to get used to. But I will always like the classics.

I love the introduction of new characters. For me, having the same characters game after game would get really repetitive and quite boring. Playing MK:DA, I instantly took up with most of the new characters. I still can't stand Mavado or Kenshi, but other than that I was very satisfied with the cast.

I loved the new girl vamp Nitara in the last one as a new addition.

You can't keep a good (bad) girl down and surely she will be back in a big way, if not in this then MK7.

This time round I am thinking the best new girl on the block will be Kira but it's not just female fighters new or old I like.

Sektor is my all-time fave and of the new males well Hotaru looks good, the jury is out on Ben/Kobra. Not enough info on the others to judge.

Its almost a necessity to bring in some new fighters when making a game sequel, it keeps things fresh and more interesting if their are new fighting styles, powers, and fatalities to mess around with. Don't get me wrong, it would be an utter mistake to remove the classic characters but adding new ones into the mix is necessary and gives game developers a chance to try something new.
I'll admit, I was not impressed with MOST of the new characters in MK ever since MK3 but for the first time, these new characters which are appearing in MK:D almost feel as if they fit right into the world of Mortal Kombat. Skab and Hotaru in particular are characters I am very excited to get a chance to use in the game.

I never liked Mavado either...the ONLY time he gets picked is from random select, and then i cringe

It's quite an interesting question actually...cuz I know alot of people don't like the thought of new characters...but then we ask ourselves...

...how can we have CLASSIC characters, if we do not have NEW characters...

Personally the thought of MK with just Scorpion, Sub-zero, sonya, kano, johnny cage etc...with no change, story development etc would be WAY to boring. Which is why I don't think ed would ever do that...he knows better.

Remember...Mileena/Baraka/Kabal/Kitana all were NEW CHARACTERS once...........

so with that said...BRING ON THE NEWBIES!@ and keep bringin back the ones we love too!

I agree with Newbies, but i also hate loosing other name plates. I like my cup to runneth over. The best thing i like is auto select. You get a random character and have to just try your best with what you have. When you fight amongst your friends, it's fun to have a lot of people to choose from and then eliminate to where you can't use them again if you lose. I know it's only my opinion, but i am into the gameplay not so much a story. Can't they all just get along? Well no, there wouldn't be anything to fight about!

I'm looking forward to the new characters. Ashrah especially! I loved Nitara and Mavado in MKDA as they added somethng to the series and were cool characters. Frost was a welcome addition but the likes of Hsu Hao, Li Mei, Master Cho and Drahmin did not impress me at all.

The reason that some may find it hard to deal with new characters is because they take up the space a classic or old favourite could have had.

Also, whether or not new characters are accepted will depend upon how they look, how they play and if they are any good, what their story is and whether or not they seem to be a clone of a past character.

My thoughts exactly
I like new characters, because it keeps the story interesting, while having something fresh to keep the rest of the game going.

However, there are always people who want pure classic characters, and won't even try to see how the new ones actually fit in.

I think the best way to introduce a new character is obviously to have a great look, but I'd give them right off the bat some sort of story that entangles with the story already, e.g. Kenshi was blinded by Shang Tsung years ago, e.g. Mavado has the whole Red/Black dragon backstory.
Li Mei on the other hand didn't have much of a story influence when she was introduced, and I believe that's why she wasn't so well accepted (not that it matters as she's back, heh).

Still though, as pathetic as it is, I'm not looking forward to Ben at all. I just think he's really plain, especially his name.
Lol, think about it, the announcer calling people out, Bo'Rai Cho, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Shao Kahn, BEN. Doesn't sound the same does it? Meh, oh well, I'll judge him properly when we know more about him.

Me personally though, no I don't find it too hard, providing the character seems interesting, which is why I'm looking forward to Ashrah and Hotaru, and prepared to give Kira, Ben and Dairou a chance, but there are always people that love the "classic" characters too much to give way to the new ones.

I totally agree.. fans can't accept new characters as NEW, meaning they have to think that a new character must be a character from the previous games. While I'm really looking forward to the new characters, they look very promising. Hotaru and "Skab" being 2 of my new favorites by far.

Well, I like that new characters appear in MK! Being stuck with the old ones in every game sucks big time if there's no new ones included!!!

Hotaru looks awesome and so does Ashra!
That's what I liked about MKG, so many new characters!!! But If they made an all-star MK like MKT again, with every single MK fighter in MKD graphics, it'll be great!!!

And then the "new" character won't be left out!

But you haev to have new characters. You have to freshen up the game so that people don't get bored so quickly and stop playing.

It is like anything really. There has to be somekind of "newness" to keep epople interest.

I love new characters. In fact, I'd be rather upset if an MK came out that didn't give us at least 5...

Anyway, MKDA did not disappoint me in this regard. The only character who I disliked at all was Frost (too derivative). Loved everyone else.

As for MKD...now, I'm sure they're only beta names, but "Skab" and "Ben" do not sound right to me. They look okay, but their names will change....or at leats I hope they do...

But everyone seen so far in MKD looks great, at least. Of the new characters, I have the highest expectations for Hotaru. I liked him from the first screenshot I saw of him, and I believe he will become as popular as Kenshi.

I think new characters are essential for the story to develop and evolve. I think older characters who can develop are still great (Mileena, Kitana, Kung Lao, etc) and even characters who's story can evolve more (Tanya, Nightwolf) are still interesting. But new characters are needed to keep things exciting.
Although she was my favourite for 4 MK games, Sonya just seems boring now, her story has been the same for ages, and her moves are becoming a little stale, so a new character would be good to give us and Sonya a break. She can then be re-introduced at a later stage when another story develops to include her...eg. Kira may somehow invite Sonya's intervention into her story, and then Sonya should be playable in the next installment.

I'm in favor of a larger proportion of new characters in MK:D. I actually get annoyed when I hear about guys like Jax and Raiden being confirmed. Not because I don't like them, but because instead of being able to look forward to an exciting, brand-new character I can play around with, I'm being handed back the exact same guys I've been playing for the last five games. I really like the new character designers Midway hired after MK4 and I want to see what cool new stuff they can come up with. Or at least let us see some characters who haven't been in the main line of MK games, like Sareena.

yeah but they can't just kill every old character in a game...it wouldn't be the right thing to do...and important characters like raiiden will probably be on every mk...
