Since the similarities between Deathstroke and Kano are "missing an eye" and "villainy", I'm fairly certain the MK team is not exactly coming up with deep metaphors.

Sub-Zero/Batman: Masked, mysterious heroes who have trouble with women.
Liu Kang/Superman: Altruistic heroes.
Sonya/Catwoman: OMG DEY HAFF BOOBIES!
Jax/Green Lantern: Military men.
Kitana/Wonder Woman: Warrior Princesses.
Kano/Deathstroke: Cycloptic villains.
Raiden/Captain Marvel: Thunder.
Shang Tsung or Scorpion/Joker or Flash: These four don't really seem to parallell well; I assume the next batch of unveiled characters will reveal better counterparts.

I could see potential counterparts such as:
Shang/Luthor or Zod: Scheming villain. Bonus, Zod has goatee.
Scorpion/Doctor Fate: Mystical hero (or antihero).
Scorpion/Solomon Gruny: Powerful undead beings.
Reptile/Joker: Mentally unbalanced, use acid.
Quan Chi/Joker: Pasty as fuck evildoers.
Flash/Kabal or Reptile: Fast runners (Kabal's Rush/Reptile's elbow dash)?

Except they already said Kano was Deathstroke's counterpart, not the Joker's. Yet Deathstroke is the un-ninjalike "ninja villain", and Kano is even less like a ninja than DS. The hints they listed weren't necessarily the archetypes for comparison; they were just hints as to who the DC characters would be.

I'd say Deathstroke and Kano match up mostly in the assassin-like style, and the look...

After a million people and even Ed Boon have told you that this game is not cannon you're going around talking about that MK2-MK3 nonsense. Theres no indication story wise or character wise that this is set between MK2 or mk3, boon said that because the game has mostly MK2 characters. Please stop spreading these lies. Ed boon said and I qoute "Umm if I HAD to SQUEEZE it into the MK timeline I might put it in between MK2 and MK3 but the game is not cannon at all). Also, Scorp and Superman are counterparts/rivals because they are THE most recordnised.

I'm pretty sure noone in this thread even knows what a counterpart is... No doubt it'll join canon, confirmed, and iconic in the annals of dead, overworked and misused words.

Deathstroke is not a ninja, so if that's the unsurprisingly erroneous logic for them as counterparts, that's easily swept aside. Of course, there's always the fact they're the two most prominent masked swordsmen on each side. It's not a very rigid thing, being a counterpart, and I could very much imagine Boon's remarks really just referring to the two as mercenary villains.

Scorpion's arguably the counterpart to Superman as most recognised icon of the series, which could also make an argument that Sub-Zero and Batman are the often more popular, always close seconds.
An argument much less convoluted and retroactive than trying to spin some sort of hack plot late in the game that tries to say Sub-Zero's demeanor is anything like Bruce Wayne's.

There's obviously some overlap, but I have my doubts that the selections have anything to do with any literal comparions.
