What are you guys chatting about - even though this is old post bought back from the dead. I can honestly say Liu Kang is one of the best Characters in the game. Taking him out of the game would be like taking Ryu out of Street Fighter - He is quite possibly one of the main figure heads in MK.
Actually taking Liu Kang out would be more like taking Vega out of street fighter he is a popular character but both are screaming queres

Can't really say it ruined him, since MK:SM is largely non-canon...but pretty much everything I've come to hate about Scorpion was emphasized throughout that game.
A mindless, rampaging drone, who does random things for little-to-no logical reason...only to get his ass kicked for it. Portrayed as a villain even though: A) Scorpion's neutral...and B) even then, he usually leaned towards the good side. Yet despite this, I'm still supposed to think he's this "bad ass wild card" just because he has a flaming skull head and wears spikes & skulls on his clothes.
I preferred the Scorpion who actually had some sense on honor in what he did...and had some semblence of discipline and actually thought about what he was doing.

I see what your'e saying now. Hopefuly the respectable side of Scorpion will come to grow in MK8. With that said, you must have hated his character in the MK Movies. He was a "slave under shang tsung's power." Now even THAT pissed me off. Esepcially for Sub-Zero who was there to kill Shang and be AGAINST Scorpion.

i hope they do something with Liu Kang - i'm not saying he developed aswell aswell as some other characters but he did sort of move a little way from the whole sterotype of bruce lee - and he wasn't qutie the same - for a start he was a former shaolin monk and part of the white lotus society (bruce lee was neither), he also had a costume change with the red headband and the red parts on his trousers, and then his hair grew. To me he is nothing like he was in MK1.
I would like to see Liu Kang become a new Raiden type character - as long as he is still present in the game (doesn't even have to be playable in MK8). i will be very happy.
But then while you guys judge liu kang - all the characters from MK1 are rip offs from other media:
Liu Kang - Bruce lee
Johnny Cage - Van Damme
Raiden - Big Trouble in Little China Town (Thunder Guy)
Kano - Terminator
Sub Zero - while as far as i am aware he isn't copied, however his moves are copied from something similar
Sonya Blade - was once a man, but i guess shes origonal aswell
Scorpion - another origional Character
Characters like Kano and Johnny Cage have done far less in terms of character development than Liu Kang, yet Kang still seems to get far more stick. I would just be happy to see him return :)

I can't help but think of Oharra from Enter the Dragon when I see Sub-Zero (MK3 version anyway...)
But then again, one could argue that there are a lot of people who had scars over their eye in many other movies/media

As I said, Liu Kang has no purpose to serve. He is dead, and I can't see the MK Team/Midway bringing him back as a human character nor a zombie. So i suggest that they should let him...R.I.P!

but Scorpion doesn't serve a purpose either - infact that story line of that character is so far gone should there really be any point in bringing him back?
Liu Kang still has a purpose - with Raiden Corrupt, i personally believe he will be the one taking the place of him instead of Fujin.

Yes, he's a Shaolin warrior monk from the White Lotus Society, but his Bruce Lee-like aspects are more apparent. Also, I have an issue with the fact that his overall look hasn't changed much. From MK2-MK3, his hair grows long. In MK4, he puts on a red muscle shirt. His MKD and MKA costumes are basically just like his MK3 look.

Why not just have characters such as Fujin and Nightwolf be mentor-type characters? I personally feel that it would be better for Liu Kang's story to be wrapped up in MKA so that he can be remembered as a hero and all that good stuff.

You're correct in saying that all of the characters in MK1 are pretty much rip-offs and things like that. However, you do make some errors that I'm going to point out.
The ninja-type characters in MK are based off of ninja stereotypes that are portrayed in movies and TV shows. The ironic thing is that Sub-Zero (the younger one), while not being a ninja (at least not how I see him and the Lin Kuei), is closest to being like a real ninja through his display of endurance, patience, and perseverance as well as the correct disposition of his heart.
I don't know if Sonya can really be considered original. She has the whole "military tough chick" thing going on. As for Scorpion, he's definitely not original. Aside from being based off of a ninja stereotype, he also seems to have similarities to Spawn and Ghost Rider.
The problem with your argument here is that characters like Sub-Zero and Raiden have really developed while characters like Liu Kang haven't.

Although I don't really care for Kano and Johnny Cage, I actually have to disagree with you about Johnny Cage at least. In MKA, he actually gets real story and character development. The thing with Liu Kang is that he had potential for some bit of exploration into his character, especially when it comes to MK2 after he finds out that his fellow Shaolin have been attacked and slain. MKSM could have done this, but instead, it made Liu Kang even less likable.

It's because Scorpion is completely reliant on his gimmicks that there are still those swayed by him. If I were to really streamline things, I would get rid of him, but such a thing isn't going to happen.

Although the concept of Raiden betraying Liu Kang by using his undead body as a tool of destruction is kind of interesting, I still feel it was a mistake in bringing Liu Kang back.
By having Liu Kang defeat Raiden and take his place, it would make Liu Kang even worse. I'm still amazed at how some ignore the fact that Fujin had already been made as Raiden's successor, namely after Shinnok's defeat.
So for Liu Kang to become the new Protector God of Earthrealm would completely piss all over Fujin and put him to waste. To me, that's unacceptable, and it wouldn't be worth it. Chances are that Liu Kang will still be pretty bland. He's been around since the first MK, and I feel that he's long had his run.

to be honest with you - i havn't played MK:A. Purely because
A) i could never find it for xbox
B) when i did find it my xbox was dead.
i havn't gotten around to reading all the bios yet so i didn't know about the fujin stuff.
However i actually remembers who Sonya Blade rips off, a female MA actress called Cynthia Rothrock. Never liked her films to be honest...
Though regaurdless of what everybody else thinks - there definately still is a plot left for liu kang. And imo there really was no need to kill him off in DA and intrdouce the rubbish characters.

But you see, the stuff about Fujin becoming the successor to Raiden was in their MK4 endings and confirmed as canon. Fujin was left behind in Earthrealm to guard it while Raiden led the heroes to take on the Deadly Alliance.
I don't think that the characters in DA were exactly rubbish. I feel that it was a need to kill him off, because as a character, he was just bland. He became the character that saved the day but didn't really have all that much going for him.
