Ahoy,
I don't know all members on these forums. But with regards to MK:DE, I can roughly divide the fans into three categories:
* The obsessing monomanic: they desperately want two or three characters in the game (usually lame-ass palette swaps like Smoke or Rain) and have poor spelling.
* The critic: they are critical before the game has even come out, fearing the worst. Their grammar is better but most of them would like to soulcaliburise, tekkenise or virtuafighterise Mortal Kombat.
* The satisfied fan: thinks the game is going to be great, no matter what. On the plus side, they don't sound like old wives all the time, on the downside, they usually can't spell either.
No matter what decision Boon & co make, there will always be people sad or unhappy. But we need to remember it's just a game. Plus, if Boon listened to all ideas that circulate here, we might end up having a completely daft game.
What I like about MK, among many things, is that the team makes bold decisions. Kano and Sonya were not in MK2. Boohoo! But in the end, I thought it was a good decision. If the oldies stick around for too long, they dominate the games too much, their storylines become uninteresting and the new characters will always look like filler characters. I think I'm about the only person here who never missed Baraka, Kitana or other crowd-pleasers here (I only missed Scorpion in MK3 but I wasn't really obsessing over him either).
DA shocked fans by killing off Liu Kang. Great! They should have done that much earlier. That's why I hope that Midway doesn't listen to monomanic noobs. They might want to listen to the critics but not too much, or we might actually end up with Virtua Kombat ;).
My point being: sit back and relax. I'm not getting my hopes up too much but of course I have my expectations, but I think it's better to cross that bridge when we come to it.
Cheers!

I do think that MK needs to remain MK...but it needs some elements from games like Tekken or Soul Calibur to make the gameplay better. Simple things like sidestep moves, realistic counters, parries, counter hits, better stuns...frame advantage/disadvange. It's really not that hard for a team like Midway to implement.

I haven't played any MK game in awhile...Does MK:DA have a combo system and will Deception have it?

If you mean auto-combos as in the MK3-string; no. If you mean strings as in Tekken; yes.
Thanks for the other comments by the way. And I do share some of your concerns Konqrr ;).

eh.. just leave mk as mk.. if you take to many things from other games it will just not feel the same.. say.. i liked the mk:da style.. if they only had mabe a few more combos to the list.. then that will be great...

Deadly Alliance had the best combo system yet, and remember that MK is like a melting pot that's constantly changing to satisy the fans.

I'm a critic ; )
But I am also an mk fan.
I want MK to look like MK, but keep evolving the fight engine to become more free, and realistic.
If MK doesn't change the other games will overshadow it like what was happening before.
Now that MK got more realistic, look what happened. It brought life back to a series that was beginning to show signs of age.
To keep this up, change and adopting some ideas is a must.
You can't stay stuck with one idea, it's just bad news.

tekken and the rest, well suck
tekken is like slow paced, but the matches last 15 secconds cuz the hits do like massive damage 80% IF U SPEND MONTHS MEMORIZING THE 50 BUTTON COMBO'S
mk gold was a great 3d fighter, mkda was also great, but i missed the spead of gold, mkd will be faster gameplay they said, so i am happy.

Tekken and the rest of the series are the best and top rated games on the market.
Tekken is faster than MKDA. Actually I tend to like Tekken better than VF4 because of the pace it has. It feels more comfortable to me.
The max string combo in tekken is 11 attacks, and it's escapable and blockable and counterable.
The combos in MKDA can be up to like 14 attacks and are inescapable.
The super attacks in tekken are very hard to hit and to be hit with because they are slow.
Matches in tekken can be short or very long depending of the skill of the player/s If you have two good players the matches will go almost till time over a lot of times.
If someone likes to block with their face,......well that's a different story : /
I don't know what you are talking about dude.
That game you are describing is not tekken.

Yes, MKDA is great fighter, but, we can say this now, doesn't have good combo system. Look at VF4 evo or SC2: those games don't have long combos, but system is better. MKD needs only 3-5hit combinations and jugglings - just like SC2 and VF4. Fights would be more interesting. I know that boon played all new fighting games and he now know what was wrong with MKDA and he said that movement and fighting system will be better in MKD. I hope that this means he re-made combo system and throwing system.

There were some things wrong with MKDA, though it is a good game. I have faith in Boon and Midway that they will not make the same mistakes twice and produce a dynamite game in MKD.

what does this have something to do with MKD?
Well, the thread started out as a discussion about the future of the MK franchise, which pretty much means it's about MKD, I guess...
Anyhow, you've got some interesting points, VainQueur, and I must say I agree with you... for the most part, at least. ;)

Good explanation, but you characterize the people on these forums into 3 categories, and basically try to say that they're all wrong, which makes no sense.
personally, I would put myself inbetween categories 2 and 3. I don't compare MK to Soul Calibur too much, but I do think that Soul Calibure is an outstanding example of what fighting games are today, especially in terms of extras, content and character design. Of course, MKDA was certainly great in the character design department.
I have been a fan of Mortal Kombat since that day I first discovered it in the arcade back in '92. I fell in love with it that day. Unfortunately, here I am, 12 years later, finding myself without even a shred of the love I had for MK back then. In recent years, my priorities have been my education and my career, so frankly, I could care less about video games. MKDA was one of the last games I bought. So what's my problem with MK?
Simple. The MK development team promised us the best Mortal Kombat ever. They gave us Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance instead, which was nothing like what they said it would be. After Mortal Kombat 3 and 4, I was no stranger to the disappointment that MK can turn out. I didn't let my blind fanboy ambitions influence me...I know a good game when I play it, and yeah, MKDA was fine, for a couple of weeks, but it suffered from the same garbage MK3 and MK4 suffered from. They made promises upon promises, they said they would do this, do that...and when DA came out, it was absolutely nothing like they said it would be. After 3 games of that, I got sick and tired of Mortal Kombat.
Now, Deception is on its way, and I can honestly say that it is shaping up to be fantastic. Maybe this will rekindle my dead MK flame, but until that game comes out, I will remain skeptical of it. Why? Because I know that Mortal Kombat never lives up to its hype, and I am not going to let myself get overexcited about a game that may potentially be a disappointment.
If Midway doesn't listen to the fans, that's a great thing...becuase honestly half the fans around here have the worst ideas I've ever seen...its unfortunate that so little of the MK community actually has good ideas. I don't think its right of you to divide everyone into 3 categories and criticize all of them, except maybe for category 1, which I completely agree with you about, but as for category 2, I think those people, myself partially included in that category, are just not blinded by hype, and are rightfully critical of a game that has not delivered on its promises for a long time.
Here's hoping MKD will be the best fighting game ever...I could care less about video games anymore, but the fact that MKD has interested me enough to 'come out of retirement' as it is to post on this message board again, and actually theorize and get a little excited about it, is saying alot. I honestly think MKD will be a great fighting game, but I'd rather see for myself before I let someone tell me that its going to be great, whether its the developers or the site staff or someone on this forum. Time will tell.

I didn't say anyone here was "right" or "wrong", I just often find that a lot of narrow thinking is going around here in these quarters.
Of course people don't easily boil down to three groups. Hell, where would I be? "4. Pedantic critics" hmm? :) They were just some easy divisions I made...

Well, people then might ask themselves why they get disappointed... because they get all hyped up. The only MK game that disappointed me was MK4 because it was so direly lacking in originality.
Most fighting game players play purely for fun, they're not interested in tier lists. Unbalanced as it may be, I have found the MK games to be one of the best playable games. The Tekken series never had that appeal. I like VF as well but it's still a bit too cerebral for me. SC comes close but is often a bit cheap, no? Anyway, we may disagree on this issue of gameplay perpetually I guess... and it's not the main theme of this topic anyway :p.
