I used to think that MK was the best fighting game. But that was because I didn't know any better. I recently got Tekken Tag, and Tekken 5. Those two showed me just how far behind MK is. Tekken doesn't have any of that 50/50 crap, "sweep, hi attack, sweep, hi attack". Plus, there's so much more depth to Tekken. Chain throws, sidestep attacks, feints, etc. Whereas the only thing MK has is "dial-a-combo". Gets way too old after a while. The characters in Tekken are also way more diverese. In MK, I could use any character pretty much if I just remembered one combo and the sweep attack. In Tekken, each character has his or her distinct fighting style, which makes it much more difficult and time consuming to learn how to use them. When I play MK, I tend to think every character is identical except for looks.
Flame me if you want. But I think Tekken has the fighting genre dialed, and MK has only scratched the surface.

Actually, many members of this forum have been saying that very same thing for a long time now.
Personally, while MK is indeed very flawed, I despise Tekken. Not once have ever played any Tekken game and enjoyed it.

Well, I guess it's how we prefer our fighting games.
I like Tekken because it's more realistic (no projectiles, grappling techniques that are based on real martial arts techniques, etc).
I'm assuming you enjoy MK more cuz it's flashier, with all the inhuman moves and fatalities and stuff? I've never really cared for those things, so I guess MK wasn't a good game for me to pick up.

Haha, despite the more realistic aproach tekken has, most of the moves in MKDA and MKD are quite authentic (except Judo, they messed that up badly) or largely resembling the original m.art.
Tekkens major flaw IMO is it's overuse of japanese stereotypes concerning the protagonists and antagonists, and pretty much...every other aspect of character design. Even if it's made in Japan, they could have made Tekken SO much better.
I like it, don't get me wrong, but T5 was a letdown for me. Alongside T4.
MKD feels more innovative, despite it's horrendrous fighting engine.

What do you mean by Japanese stereotypes in the good guys and the bad?

I know this sounds INSANE, but some of us play videogames for FUN, not to meet time consuming challenges.

^^ I second that. I quite enjoyed Celebrity Deathmatch, while others bashed it for "not being deep enough". Losers.

even if tekken has more diverse cast, the mk story is so much better. tekken is all baout corporations and such who cares about the mishima zaibatsu, i like to know that the characters are fighting for a reason not just fat cash. shang tsungs story, kitanas story they are some of the best characters and histores in fighting game history. i think the only flaw fighting games have is that they try to intor TONS of new fighters into new games . just stick with the good ones and keep upping their looks and stories.

Hahaha, funny. Mk sucks, I like it.
Prime example of stereotypes: (I may stand corrected since i don't know the Tekken plot throughout)
-the relationships between protagonists and antagonists is often blood related or they are close friends. (X, Dragonball and many other shonen, Escaflowne, Inu Yasha are good examples)
Tekken: Mishima Clan -quadruple team (Jinopachi-Heihachi-Kazuya-Jin)
-training of one of the protagonists is often done by the antagonist or an elder superior, maybe more or less often blood related (Shaman King, and almost every second manga or anime)
Tekken: Heihachi - Kazuya and Jin
-the protagonist harbors a dark secret, physical or mental conditional dis-order that proves to be a heavy burden but a great advantage in combat (Berserk, X, )
Tekken: Jin-DEVIL Jin!
-the antagonists who are the catalyst of the events aren't the real and sworn opponent of the protagonists, and they are gathering power of others to fulfill a barely recognisable goals often through killing (X, Shaman King-?-)
*I relate to this as the highlander effect
Tekken: Ogre
other interesting phenomenon:
-the opposites protagonist and antagonists often sharea friendly bond, almost brotherly or loving. This however hasn' been in Tekken but faintly.
-the protagonists always looks gruff, odften paired up with other protago-nists who are joyfull or more active outwards (Jin-Paul)
-there is always a rival and competitor who is not the antagonists, who tries to best the protagonists in every possible way (Jin-Hwoarang, Goku-Vegeta, countless others...)
Uhh, may come up with more examples but that would require intense searching for evident ones. Thank God tekken is fairly balanced in shonen and other traditional japanese manga/anime character traits.

Well, I'm a fan of both the Mortal Kombat and the Tekken series. Each of them has their strengths and weaknesses.
With MK, it's good in terms of characters, ambience, overall story, blood, gore, fatalities, and perhaps some other things I can't think of. However, it's lacking in terms of the fighting engine and I hope that MK7 will be an enormous improvement over MKDA and MKD. I'd like to see things be like in that of a martial arts movie so it can really capture that vibe.
With Tekken, the fighting system is very good though I do have some little problems here and there. Either way, MK needs to learn from Tekken in terms of how to make a good fighting engine. Tekken also has some cool characters like Kazuya, Law, Baek, and Nina. What I feel is lacking is a good ambience. Right now, I'd say it's decent (certainly better than that of SC's, VF's, and DOA's), but not what I'd exactly call good due to certain things. The story could also be a bit more interesting.
Overall, both series need improvements. It seems that at least MK: Shaolin Monks looks very promising. Hopefully, that'll be the beginning of a fresh new start for MK and they really need to have something good for MK7. It doesn't have to have the depth of most other top fighters out there, but I want the characters to play uniquely while being balanced.

yeah it woiuld be cool too if mk and tekken took the stupid"laughable" characters out of their games like kuma and bo raicho. that just takes away from the coolness or dark nature of a game. if you want that make another primal rage and put a baear in it. or jsut make a gam called stupid drunk fat ass and put bo in there. the characters are really what draw me to a game, if they are lame then i wont care how cool of moves they do cuz i dont care about the characters or their story or WHY they are fighting. i liked KUNG LAO in Deadly Alliance cuz he was fighting for REVENGE against the one who killed his friend/brother. thats what draws me in.....good story and good characters.
Hahaha, oh the naivete...
Scorpion is out for revenge, Kung Lao is out for revenge, Shao Kahn is out for revenge, Shang Tsung is out for revenge, hell, even Mokap is out for re-venge.
I have to admit, Kung Lao was always a darker aspect character of the monks and the heroes, and Lius death was a 100% good chyoice, though MKs storyline is far from being deep. I don't see how Bo' Rai Cho don't fit into MK...he is a violent, gruff, apalling character who uses unorthodox methods. With all the sterile gong fu and karate characters, ninjas, spec-tres and cyborgs, MK would be lamer than DOA's character concepts.
I don't get it why people take Bo as a hammy, harmless fat drunkard while he is or can be a -as I said- violent, unethical, gruff and sarcastic-hedonic warrior. Oh, and the final conclusion: anyone and I mean anyone who thinks that any kind of drunken style martial art isn't real or effective, any-thing...is fatally wrong. Zui Quan is as lethal as Dim Mak (death touch).
Power to the Bo' Rai Cho.

OK,the stupidity continues,and that's when I come in...
How can MK be more famous when Tekken sells more games and also is distributed WORLD WIDE unlike any MK?Tekken is played on a very wide competitive scene where virtually thousands and thousands of players meet and play.MK:D has no competitive scene;the only thing it has is the 300+ (and that's being generous) players who play online.
I don't know where you get your faulty perceptions from, but face the reality.Players prefer Tekken because it's BETTER gameplay wise;its engine is superior then that of MK:D's.Thus, that's the only thing that matters. You won't hold tournaments to perform fatalities,or to discuss MK:D's storyline,or to drool over the sexy MK characters;you'll hold tournaments to PLAY the game.MK:D sucks as a competitive fighter, and you know it.That's why everyone plays Tekken.

Dude here is putting it to you straight through an analogy of a cool, scruffy, badass who gets by on being a bad ass, and a nerdier more common guy who makes millions being a pathetic nerd but has no friends.
Mortal Kombat: The controversial fighting game who created controversial games with its outrageous blood and groundbreaking gore. Come on MK is better just because its MK. Anyone can pick it up and have a hell of a time slicing and dicing their friends to bits, fatalities, babalities, shit anyality can lead to laughs as you pumml your homies. MK just adds up to a fun time with some friends beating the hell out of eachother. Shit even puzzle combat alone is funner than Tekken.
Tekken: The nerd who although makes more money is a hell of a loser. its complexity makes it hard for just anyone to pick up and how many people do you know even own Tekken in all its slow methodicalness. Its a lame game along with its DOA counterparts, shit give me a flash and bash game over this shit any day. If i wanted a great realistic fighting game i'de pick up Fight Night or something.
I'll take my Street Fighters and Mortal Kombats over Tekken or DOA crap anyday.

That's why I don't like MK. Cuz anyone can just pick it up and play it. All you have to do is learn your stupid "dial-a-combo". Too easy. I can use any character after 10 minutes. And after you've played a few rounds, you realize that all you need to know is the sweep.
I play games for fun too, but fun to me is challenging and diverse; not crappy broken gameplay. I really couldn't care less about the blood and the many (not all) lame fatalities in MK. I'm all about the gameplay.
When I get together and play Tekken with my friends, I like being able to exchange complex chain throws, and counters that take more skill than just pressing "block+forward". For what Tekken lacks in jazz, it makes up for in gameplay. But that's what matters to me.

I hated when tekken had no 50/50 situations. It's so repetitive after time, and somewhat superfictional. MKD has the crappiest fighting game engi-ne and still the moves look at least 60% authentic.
It's not a flaw (tekkens flaw is the lack of some 50/50s) and it won't make MK beter, but I have to shudder when a Tekken character makes a move knwon to me in an extremely idiotic way.

Tekken does have 50/50 mixup situations, pretty much every half decent fighting game does, but the difference is that a) you have to force them by putting the opponent in that position, which isn't always as easy as just using any move to knock somebody to the ground, and b) the animation is more fluid and moves have reasonable startup time so that it's possible to see what's coming - it's still a guess, but it's a more educated guess, I suppose you could say, and not it's not matter of being trapped in a 50/50 mixup pretty much every time you get grounded, like in MKD.
As for characters making predictable moves, well that's not the "engine's" fault (strictly speaking in context of what people refer to as "the engine" at this site), that's the AI's fault.
I gotta say though, the AI in T5 is very shitty. It's nice that the computer juggles now, but I can pretty much win match after match against Tekken Lords on ultra hard by just spamming the same move over and over. Not that it really matters all that much, seeing as how fighting games are pretty much designed to be multiplayer games anyway.
