Don't you have to pay for X-Box Live, not MK:D? I don't have an X-Box so I'm not exactly sure how it works.

With XBOX Live you pay for a subscription to the service with PS2 you don't pay any subscription fees to play online.

So technically you're not paying for Mortal Kombat: Deception, you're only paying for the ability to play online.
Yeah, that's typical of Bill Gates, heh.
Can't say I blame him, hell he is a billionaire.
I hear live is pretty slick, too, as far as a community goes. How much per month does it cost?

On PS2, to get online you only need pay for:
:the Broadband connection
:the Broadband adapter
:the Keyboard (unknown/optional)
:the Headset (confirmed/optional)
:the PS2 (unless you own one already)
:the Game (obviously)
:Pizza (cause you'll need it!)
Once you've got these things (with/without the optional stuff), you need to get your PS2 connected to Broadband - which is free. Once you can connect, your connection details are saved to your memory card... so just boot up MKD on your PS2 with everything connected (inc memory card!), find the Online Mode option and BLAM! You're online!
I'm currently in the process of setting up my Broadband connection - my present connection just wouldn't cut the mustard with PS2 Online Gaming, so I'm upgrading to a 1MB line from NTL (which I hear will get upgraded to 1.5MB for free soon!). I got it installed yesterday, but they've STILL not given me my PIN code to use it!
Hopefully I'll get my PIN in the next day or two, then I can get my Broadband Adapter for PS2 and set it up. The thing is, I heard when setting up your connection for the first time you need to wait up to a month for your PIN Number so you can actually connect!
This is why I'm doing it about a month BEFORE MKD comes out, so hopefully it'll be ready by then!
Thankfully, the whole PS2 side of the connection is FREE... I can't really complain about any of the delays except from NTLs end :(
Peace!

The XBOX Live starter kit is about $49.95 this includes the Communicator Headset and a 12 Month Subscription to the service. Then after the initial 12 months is up it costs $49.95 to continue with XBOX Live.
However in order to use XBOX Live you need broadband and a credit/debit card.

You pay a subscription fee for Live but with PS2 online some games you have to monthly for like Twisted Metal Online, Final Fantasy, ect. and with Xbox Live you choose one gamertag to use across all games unlike PS2 where each game is a different account/price. You pay for Xbox Live because its a better network...

For anyone who wants to know EVERYTHING about PS2 network gaming, including guides and faqs, please visit this link:
http://www.playstation.com
Depending on how you're setting up, you may need to connect your PS2 to your PC, but ONLY if you're using Internet Connection Sharing.
If you want to use your PC while you're playing your online PS2 Games (unlikely), you can use ICS (explained in the linked site), but you will need to always keep your PC ON or the ICS won't work!
Normally you're better just hooking your Adapter directly to your cable box - and switch the wires when you need to use you PC, it aint that hard!
Peace!

"roadband Internet connection:
This will require a set-up cost and monthly subscription fee based on the speed of the connection you choose. Please note PlayStation recommend a connection speed of 512/128k when using Network Entertainment"
So I have 256k.. It should run fine! YAY!

Xbox Live is well worth the initial $50.00 that you pay for one year, after that its like $3.00 a year to stay in it...anyways with Xbox live you are then exclusive to a WAY faster network, and content downloads. Compared to the PS2 who's free network is sloppy...have fun with the load times, might as well grab a mountain dew because while its loading you are going to want a beverage, and the network is known for its lag and choppiness. I would imagine the videos we saw at IGN were from XBox live but im not 100% sure. Basicaly it comes down to you pay for what you get.

You have to plug in your PS2 into your cable modem/dsl modem directly, or via a router. You're PC really has nothing to do with it, it's all based upon your internet connection.
If you have a long enough chord, that'll reach from your modem/router to the living room, then hell yeah, hook it up in your living room. Me personally, I have to live with it in my bed room.

I've been playing a handful of games on my PS2, and the only game that is horrible on both load times and lag is Resident Evil: Outbreak.
Other than that, every online game I've played, such as NFL street, NFL Blitz, hell, even Chess Master, have played perfectly fine.

Hey im not trying to start a fight...im just saying I have own both ps2 and xbox, and I never use my ps2 for online play. I have never played RE Outbreak, but Madden 05 runs smoother on xbox then it did when I played it on ps2. My previous post entailed all my opinions and thats soley what they are just my opinions I am sorry if I offended anyone, just stating facts thats all.

Thing is, there will always be people to lazy to unplug the cable every time they want to switch between PC and PS2, or want to use BOTH at once.
For example, if you have an fast enough connection, you could use it to be downloading on your PC while you're busy playing MKD Online.
The setup for this is complex and is explained better in the link I posted. Just log into the site and find the network section - it's all there!
To use ICS you will need to have a second network card. If you can't or don't want to install one then you'll need a router...
But you don't need ANY of this complex set up just to get online with PS2, just to share your connection with your PC!
Peace!

Exactly! It's great that the PS2 online for the most part is free, however the reason for that is that its up to the company that makes the game or some other third party to host the servers for a game to be online for PS2. What that means is that its very possible for a game that you thought would be cool online like StreetFighter or Guilty Gear for the PS2 will not be online because those companies that made the game do not want to spend the money to maintain the servers needed for online play.
There is also the need to constantly make a user name for each title and finding a friend on a different game is much more difficult. With Xbox-live it's much more streamlined and user friendly. The service is there for any company to take advantage of and they don't have to worry about maintaining servers because Microsoft does it for them. The only thing they need to do code the game for online play. Thats why you see Capcom fighters going online on the Xbox as well as a greater selection of games for online play are on also.
If you want to see if a buddy is online you can do it on XBL, look for matches the way you want to play, boot idiots out of your game...you got it. Broadband connection are required, there is no fear of playing someone with a slow 56k connection though that damn DSL sucks too and I can tell when someone is using DSL. Plus you get a lot of free Downloads to add to your existing games, some do cost 5.00 for a few new levels though but 5.00 isn't much. All you need to pay is 49.95 once a year, it practically feels like a free service because of the long billing statment.
PS2 owners should feel lucky that Game Spy agreed to host MK:D otherwise it might have been Xbox-live shining through for the game. Both services have there ups and downs but I think the Xbox has a much better service and eveyone in the industry agrees. I did my reseach two years ago before I decided to go with The XBL service over the PS2 online.
Take care.

I have 2 modems. I unplug one to use the other, but I could have gotten a router to run both at once. My friend has a wireless router. His Fiance can use the computer upstairs while, downstairs, he is getting his ass whooped by me on Socom II.

Woah, Calm down! No! No! Put the knife down! (just teasing)
I wasn't being defensive bro, I guess I've just had better luck with my online experience with PS2, heh.
