After the MKO forums were down for the weekend because of upgrades, and whatnot, I decided to take a gander at the updated MKO news and MK: Deception Discussion threads. I was surprised! Two new characters, Darrius and Shujinko, had been revealed!

Also on the MK: Deception Discussion was a sight that made me shiver with excitement! A forum noob (no offense) had bumped my original 'Petition for FMV Endings in MKD!' thread!

Unfortunately, as the rules of this board go, the resulting action was a lock on my precious, three-month-old thread. However, I thank the user that bumped my thread, because he/she gave me this idea!

After confering with Crow, who locked my old FMV Ending Petition, I created this new thread, with a slight twist on this heated topic!

I asked a few MKO staff members if they would take part in an interview on the subject of FMV Endings. I hope that their responses will shed positive light on the subject of FMV Character Endings for MKD and future MK games!

And here are the interviews:
---------------------------------------
UrbanSmooth: Thank you for taking this time, Crow.

Crow: Sure.

UrbanSmooth: There are many MK fans that want a more 'alive' feeling to the MK storyline. What better way to add a more 'alive' feel, than with an FMV (Full-Motion Video)! Instead of character endings showing 2 or 3 pics, and some gaudy text, don't you think FMV endings would add more of an 'alive' feeling to MKD?

Crow: I am sure it would. I felt the MK:DA endings were one of the many results of the MK team's time on the project expiring. The main problem, however, is that we have already been promised so many features in MK: Deception that it may be too much asking for these FMV endings now. I do agree it would be nice, but we must be realistic.

UrbanSmooth: Yes, I, too have taken realistic thoughts about this subject of FMV Endings in MKD, however, we never know! The MK Team could be faster than we think. Do you think that FMV Endings, done as well as the Baraka vs. Mileena fight in the first MKD trailer, could bring even more hype and fandom to the MK series?

Crow: Of course, our society favors anything better in appearance, and FMVs look much better than still pictures and text. However, they are worked on limited time, and adding such things would take quite a large amount of work regardless if they could finish it. Many feel the gameplay needs improvement, and if FMV endings are included instead it would add to the amount of "fluff" this game will have. I would enjoy watching many FMVs throughout MK: Deception, but the time they spent creating them could have gone to improving the fighting engine itself.

UrbanSmooth: Let's say FMV Endings are not in MKD. The MK fans still want FMV Endings in future MK games! If you were Midway, and you were able to cover every inch of 'core' matter on MK7, what would you do to ensure the arrival of Next-Gen Mortal Kombat FMV Endings?

Crow: As much as I enjoy the storyline, Mortal Kombat is a fighting game, and the engine should be the main focus. If most fans feel comfortable with MK Deception's fighting engine, then FMV endings should become a top priority.

UrbanSmooth: Thank you for your time, Crow!

Crow: No problem.

---------------------------------------
UrbanSmooth: Thank you for your time, DAB!

DArqueBishop: Not a prob.

DArqueBishop: It probably would, if done properly. One of the big advantages the text-only endings have over the FMV endings like in MK4 were that a lot of information could be given in a short amount of time. On the other hand, provided you got decent voice actors and the like, FMV endings could give it a more cinematic feel.

UrbanSmooth: Do you think that FMV Endings, done as well as the Baraka vs. Mileena fight in the first MKD trailer, could bring even more hype and fandom to the MK series?

DArqueBishop: Maybe. Then again, even when MK4 had FMV endings, the focus was never on them. The fighting and the fatalities were the main focus. Besides which, I'm not sure I know of anyone who plays a fighting game for the storyline and/or endings anyway.

UrbanSmooth: However, if those endings were the usual picture/text, and shown at a party, or in an arcade, do you think they would receive as much of a reaction if they were Full-Motion Video?

DArqueBishop: If you've got a crowd of people around a fighting game, they won't be paying attention to the endings. For the matter, the game won't even be single-player as two-player matches will likely be the order of the day. Truthfully, I haven't seen anyone actually crowd around a game to see the ending on a single-player game since Dragon's Lair.

UrbanSmooth: Let's say they were all watching one guy play all the way through to the end? Do you think said crowd would be more interested in and absorbed into a text/picture ending, or FMV Ending?

DArqueBishop: Probably a FMV ending.

UrbanSmooth: I agree, DAB! Thank you, once again for your time!

---------------------------------------
UrbanSmooth: Thank you for your time, skizelli!

skizelli: No problem.

UrbanSmooth: There are many MK fans that want a more 'alive' feeling to the MK storyline. What better way to add a more 'alive' feel, than with an FMV (Full-Motion Video)! Instead of character endings showing 2 or 3 pics, and some gaudy text, don't you think FMV endings would add more of an 'alive' feeling to MKD?

skizelli: Yes and no. I've been a fan since 1992, so I'm used to the style. But MK has come a long way since then, so I can understand why people would want something new. Considering MK's deep story, I think it would definitely bring MK more to life.

UrbanSmooth: Do you think that FMV Endings, done as well as the Baraka vs. Mileena fight in the first MKD trailer, could bring even more hype and fandom to the MK series?

skizelli: It would give fans something more to look forward to, that's for sure. MK itself generates hype, so I don't think it could contribute much more. I know I'd be excited, though.

UrbanSmooth: As I would, too, and would many more MK fans! Thank you, once again for your time, skizelli.

skizelli: My pleasure.

Of course they favor FMV Endings, we see that. However, let us not take away from what is important here: MK is of the fighting genre, and the fighting engine is the most important thing to better.

However, there is also large room for improvement in the area of Mortal Kombat's endings. The last time I checked it was 2004, not 1992. FMVs are a lot easier to create now days than they were back then.

The MK series kind of lags behind in the department of Full-Motion Video. Other fighting games, such as the Tekken series have FMV Character Endings. Maybe the MK team should take an example from Tekken's FMV Endings!

Where are all of the FMV Ending supporters? Let your voice be heard! This is our thread!
Very cool, urbansmooth.
Hope you get some dragon points for those great interviews!
I also want FMV endings, but i also want a very good fighting experience :-/
So, i guess as stated in the interviews midway might now have enough time for FMVs with all of the other things.
Like stated above, FMV endings would be great, but not as important as the game play.

I think that they should focus the most on the game play, and if time allows it, do the FMV's. Or they could just do them out source. Hire another company to do the FMV's while the MK team focuses on the game play.

I think FMV's are better than the picture endings.

I think that maybe to save time, the MK team could have text endings for all the fighters, but then once you beat the game with every fighter you can unlock the real ending which could be a long FMV like the intro FMV.

That would save time and be cheaper for them I imagine.

Nice interview urbansmooth.

I agree that FMV endings would be a great reward for beating the game. And nothing like the endings they gave us in MK4. Fully rendered endings would be excellent. Hopefully they have implemented it this time. And if not, there is always the next game.

I would like them to focus more on the gameplay tho than the endings. It would be great to get them both but I would take a better 'true' fighter than beautiful endings.

But back on topic, I would like to see them in there as well. Just don't take anything away from the gameplay for them.

FMV endings are a must, i agree with everything you said bro. Everything would look so neat and awesome.

But granted with FMV endings, i do indeed think they also need to focus on the gameplay. Gameplay is one of the most important things ever in a fighting game, without a doubt.

They've had two years to put this game together, I'm fairly confident FMVs or "real-time" endings are in it. I doubt there will be anything like the Baraka/Mileena video, but probably be the actual in-game models.

In game models would probably be good enough. I mean, I'll grant you that MK4's were pretty corny, but they could've been much worse. ;)

Thanks for the input guys. I say if they are going to do FMV Endings, they should use the best quality available. CG, not in-game. So, go Baraka vs. Mileena style. Not in-game. Of course, this is open for discussion! I'm just saying if you're going to do something, you might as well use the best possible means. CG would be the best possible means in this situation.
