Should it be time for an old classic character to leave the game?
Should it be time for an old classic character to leave the game?

Throughout all these mk games it seems all the classic characters have been in every game and will always be in every mk game.
I was wondering, should one of the classic characters like scorpion, sub-zero, Raiden etc. leave the entire Mortal Kombat series forever. And maybe a new classic should come in?
Any thoughts here?

part of me wants to be like. KILL RAIDEN SUB AND SCORP. but i really dont think they could have as good of a leader as raiden. and they couldnt characters to match the uniqueness of sub and scorp. i think it would be easier for the teenagers to see raiden sub and scorp go. but ive been playing with them since i was 8. but what is mortal kombat without those 3 guys?

I would say Scorpion or Kitana. I wouldn't personally miss those two but I know there are some people out there that would probably commit ritualistic suicide if they were officially gone from the series.
But meh, the only guy that I wanted gone from the series permanently was Liu Kang and ol' turkey gobbler is back which proves that death isn't really important in the MK universe. It's just a "minor inconvenience."

I wouldn't be too concerned as long as there's a good enough reason for them to leave other than so that there's space for other characters.
For example Raiden not being in MK3 because of Earthrealm and Outworld merging. Something a long the lines of that, but a more permenant thing.
Raiden could be made an Elder God again but this time once he takes the status he can never go back. I can't see this happening though, Raiden would rather stay on earth anyday.
But if he did leave for some reason it would open the door for Fujin's return, I think everyone underestimated his potential because of the quality of the game he debuted in. He'd make a brilliant character in either old school 2D or next generation 3D.

the classics could have a break, but not leave completely.
Raiden for instance could sit out the game as a meddling Elder God. With his new status, he could do certain things to affect the outcome of the battle between good and evil.
Scorpion could return to hell after finally enacting his revenge, but then return a few games later under the control of some evil being and act as a slave to that person whilst still retaining his same badass attitude.
Sub-Zero could become a recluse after vowing to train and truly master the power of the Dragon Medallion. He trains alone and returns a few years later more powerful than ever!
Kitana could beocme queen of Edenia and stay on her realm to ensure it's protection. She can finlly return after learning of some great danger to Earth or something may be going on on Earth that will affect Edenia if it is not sorted out.
They are not the best of examples, but they could probably work if it happened.

I really dont want any characters leaving forever.
Well, i could live without most new mk4 characters (kai, jerek, reiko, tanya, shinnok)
I also could live without sektor and cyrax.
But the rest i want to stay, even stryker and rain......

Well a couple of characters I wouldn't mind never coming back are already missing from MKD. If Johnny Cage or Sonya never came back, I'd be very happy
I can never see Mortal Kombat without Scorpion or Sub Zero, and luckily Boon agrees. If one sits out a game, I wouldn't be too bothered, but I doubt either would leave forever.
Just off topic, I don't understand why Liu Kang is hated sooooooo much, he was an effective character in the 2D games, and was awesome in MK4 - I'm excited about his return in Deception.

Rayden, Kitana, Cage and either sonya or Jax needs to ride the bench for one or two games. There's characters that only appeared in one game that need to be reintroduced with improvments on them. That's whay I was glad to see Nightwolf, Rain, Kabal, Ermac, Jade, Noob, and Sindel return. I'd like to see them bring back Kai and Fujin possibly in the next game. They weren't fully developed, but were interesting, especially Kai.
I think the general roster needs to be shaken up a bit from time to time so that it doesn't feel too stale. It almost gives the impression that Kai, Nightwolf, Kabal, Ermac and a few others couldn't carry the series and need the originals to oull it out.
And not only should several ride the bench, maybe one or two need to die.... and STAY DEAD! *looking in Liu Kang's and Cage's direction*

YES and NO.
NO: There are many important and awesome classics that should remain in the game! Raiden, Sonya, Cage, Sub-Zero, are great examples.
And even though I rather see Scorpion finally die or just rest for a couple of games (due to his so unoriginal style that became boring since mk2) I think he is just as important as those.
YES: Kill the ones we really dont need such as Kitana!! Worst character ever.

i have been playing MK since day 1 so i am pretty well attached to the classics. sub-zero and scorpion are by far my favorites but i wouldnt mind them taking a break for a game or two and making a suprise return in MK 8 or 9 as secret characters or something, totally redone with massivly upgraded moves and looks

Mortal Kombat wouldn't seem to be Mortal Kombat without Sonya, Sub-Zero, Scorpion and Raiden being involved in someway even if only in the background story.
Think about it. As soon as any hears the names Sub-Zero or Scorpion the first thing comes to their minds is Mortal Kombat. They may have never even played the game, but that is what comes to mind.
Raiden has been the long standing thread that has connected Mortal Kombat together. He is the one who summons Earths warriors, he is the advisor, leader, etc. What other character can say he has been involved in almost every game, movie and TV show of Mortal Kombat at least storywise. The only thing of MK he has not been in was Special Forces I think. He was in MK1, MK2, the storyteller of MK3/UMK3, MK:M-Sub-Zero (remember Raiden was the one who chewed Sub-Zero out after he gave the medallion to Quan Chi), back again in MK4, MK:DA. He was also in both movies, the cartoon series AND the MK:Conquest series. The only other characters that can claim that is Sub-Zero and Scorpion. In their cases they were not even the same characters only having the same name in one or two instances. It just would not be Mortal Kombat without the one god willing to become mortal to save the world.
As for Sonya, true she isn't as well known or popular as the great trio already mentioned. Sorry Queve, but its the truth. But Sonya is the original MK female and has been more of a Earthrealm Champion than Liu ever was. Liu may have been raised to fight, but Sonya was literally forced into it late in the game. (If you don't know what I am taking about please check her MK1 bio.) She has stood the test of time, the test of being surrounded by skippy dressed eye-candy and still becoming one of the best fighters of MK not just best female fighter. If you say her story is stale, then you haven't been keeping up with it. No longer is she chasing the Red or Black Dragon only, but is now in charge of preparing Earth's defenses against attack by Outworld, Netherrealm, the Vampires, the Dragon King, etc. She is literally now the mortal female version of Raiden, job-wise.
Now don't get me wrong, there are a few classics we could do without. Kano for one. He has his uses, but that is long gone. Let him remain dead unless there is a need for him to return. However, I personally believe if the Black Dragon is to survive they need a new leader. He has failed miserably. Perhaps this Kira will be a suitable replacement? Only time will tell.
Another classic I could do without is Liu Kang. Aside from being the champion, he has no story. The tournament is dead. Has been since Shao Kahn broke the rules in MK3. There is no need for A champion, we now have a small army of them aka the Chosen and a few others. If Liu Kang dies and remains dead its no great loss. But its no big deal if he comes back either. The same goes for Johnny Cage. Unless he finally gets a hint I don't see a need for his return. I love him as a fighter, but as a character his story definitely needs some work. At least let him use his acting skills so he can be a spy or something.

But do we want to see the same two or three people turning out to be the heroes of the game? If they are supposed to be the main characters, then what's the point of having that other characters?

Without the 'heroes' then we have an entirely different story that has nothing to do with the ongoing Mortal Kombat story. Even if you placed it centuries in the future or past of the present storyline it would need to have Raiden, Scorpion, and a relative of Sub-Zero's to be considered a Mortal Kombat game. What other series of fighting (or anytype) ongoing games do you completely throw away all of the classic characters and can still call it by the same name? Even Final Fantasy keeps a few 'characters' through out its series (Cid for example) and they create a completely new world for each game. If you want to keep this games series in the world of Mortal Kombat as we know it, you need to keep at least the trio (Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Raiden).
Scorpion and Sub-Zero will never leave aslong as Ed Boon is alive. Boon even said this.
I don't think any of the classics should ever leave for good. I say they can miss a game or two which has already happened.
MK is for everyone and to take some of the biggest fanbase/classic characters away is not right. Just skip a game or two with those characters and have them return to keep everyone happy.
Sorry to sound mean, but I don't care for this topic much. MK is for everyone and will always be.

So there's really no point in having character's such as Kabal, Ermac, and some others then if they're not going to have a prominent role in the story line? If they're going to be the relative side kicks then what's the point? If niether Kai or Nightwolf for example have the stuff to be 'the hero' for at least one game, then why even bother putting them and others in it? lol

Liu Kang should never have come back. He's had his time, got really boring, and I think he only lasted so long because he was the "cheap beginners character" to play as. Hopefully he'll only have a small role in MKD, time for someone like Sub Zero or Kung Lao to take the hero role and win the MK championship.
As for others, hopefully a one game break will be what guys like Sonya and Johnny Cage need to come back afterwards with far more interesting storylines, and new developments. Most of them, as they've been around the longest fill an important role in MK, so shouldn't be gotten rid of for good.

The classics are what makes Mortal Kombat. The original roster should always be kept intact.
