It's been so long ago now that I wasn't sure if I read that or someone told me that. Thanks for clearing that up.

Raiden is the name of a real God that is worshipped/feared by some and is used in the arcade/midway gaming. Rayden is his name changed by Nintindo because of religious reason from the Japanese programmers. (Or vise versu and it really is Rayden, not sure which is correct anymore) I think that is what I read awhile back when it first came out on home systems; back in '92 or '93?. I agree with everyone of you!!! He is an absolute must to keep MK going!!! A must!!!!
No... he was named Rayden because there was a game out at the time called Raiden Trad and it had rights to the name.

Rayden/Raiden had two different spellings for a few reasons. One there was another game out there called Raiden and Midway didn't want to take a chance on copyright infringement and/or confusion of characters. Another is when the games got sent to consoles, the companies that Midway gave the rights too would change the spelling for some reason or another.

However, the MK character Rayden/Raiden is loosely based off a Shinto/Japanese diety called Ryujin who is one of the Raijin (a group of storm gods). Ryujin was the one of the more important ones and was often represented as a dragon. (No, Raiden is NOT the Dragon King.) Note: The three storm guys from Big Trouble in Little China were based off of the Raijin, and Raiden's look was based off of the lighting guy.

i see now why this guys names been getting changed around! :P
