Before MKD was released, I was wondering about the story, anxious to see what Midway had in store for us next in the soap opera that is MK. I finished the game with all the characters and I can't help but feel disappointment. The endings don't answer many questions, and raise a lot more. MOST of the endings are contradictory and completely uninspired. There are exceptions that did catch me by surprise, like Noob Smoke's and Raiden's but the rest? Who is the 'destiny shaping force' in Ermac's ending? Who jolted Liu Kang? And why is the DK pathetic? He dies in most endings and has little to no substance, I have a feeling this is the last we see of him as in he's a one night stand boss similar to Shinnok and the DA. He's no Shao Kahn.
Speaking of Kahn, I was happy to see that he returns in ONE ending at least. Other favorites remain in the dark, Reptile? Where art thou Reptile? If all the other dead characters were restored to their former selves after the death of the DK, then shouldn't Reptile return?
What happened to Quan Chi and Shang Tsung? Are they truly dead?
What's even more disappointing is that MKDA built up towards something, it was a period of change but what does MKD do? Go back to square one. All the dead characters magically return to life. How shit.
I hope Midway does the right thing that leave some of the dead characters dead. Definitely they need to explore this new more Raiden. The Noob Saibot/Sub Zero thing is so clever and so shocking I'm happy it manifested into reality. I hope some of the Earth warriors remain dead, namely Jax, Sonya and Johnny.
I also hope that the DK survives for another game, where we can have an all out war between the DK, Kahn and the Earthrealm warriors. I should note however that I miss the MK tournament, we haven't had that in a while so Midway should do that soon, after MK7 maybe?
I just don't like the direction the story has taken. The DK was so hyped, the death of Liu Kang was so hyped. To turn your back on these strong story points is like a slap in the face.
When you kill off a villain, it's ok for them to return eventually (as long as it is done cleverly and realistically), cuz it's a villain - they never die (a good example is Megatron from Transformers or Mum'raa from Thundercats). Heroes never die but when they rarely do die, they should stay dead. Midway should have never brought back Liu Kang, the spirit Kang at least. The zombie Kang was a nice twist though.
/end rant

SPOILERS BELOW. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
I dislike the endings as well. I guess cause they all contradict eachother, which to me means they're keeping MK7 in the shadows as much as they can. I don't think they even know what they're going to do with it, so for now everything is in the dark and everything is possible. Still, it's annoying not even having a small hint of what'll happen, like DA endings did.
I think Shujinko, Raiden, and Liu Kang's endings are all canon, though. I didn't really like Li Mei's ending. I guess cause in my opinion, Onaga lost and, well, that would mean she's out for the next MK IF she did indeed join him in the end. That sucks, cause I like Li Mei.

i dont think that MK 7 will be out for a while, cause think about it, DA came out in 2001 (i think, correct me if im wrong) and that was like three years ago and then add on top of that the time that they will (hopefully) put into sholin monks to make that a kick ass game. So if they do end up with an MK 7 lets hope that it has an awsome storyline with excellent endings.

DA came out in September of 2002
Deception came out in October of 2004
Two years. Damn, man, I HATE waiting. I want to know what happens NOW.

Matt, 2002. Oh yeah, and Daemos, just a little nitpick, but there were three different Megatrons in the same continuity. Megatron I was from Transformers G1, Megatron II was from Beast Wars/Machines, Megatron III was from Robots in Disguise,

Well, I haven't played the game yet; but regarding when MK7 would be out; i think it shouldn't be out in like 3 to 4 years. Maybe 2 at the least. But think about it, it was mentioned that MK7 is in development for XBox2 and PlayStation3, those systems are coming out around 2006; and I doubt the would retain the same graphic engine of DA as it is for next gen consoles. So in the end, it will probably be out in REALLY late 2006 or middle-late 2007(even more probably).

Dude......I don't want to wait that long to find out. Oh, WHY does the story have to be so intriguing ? Or rather, why do the endings have to leave you so much in the dark!!!?

As I said I haven't played the game, but I think the answer to that question is not so difficult. They just want you to be left out with no answers so when they say: "New MK!, INFO ON THE STORY AFTER MKD'S ENDINGS!!" you go out and buy(or at least rent) the game ASAP to find out.
Also, because it's MK; and everything is full of darkness, they just love to leave fans waiting for the next game to answer the questions...however, that new game usually creates even more questions that the ones you had before....yup, that's the usual thing.

Deadly Alliance came out in November of 2002
Deception came out in this month of this year
As amusing as Raiden's ending was, I had my problems with it. Here we have Raiden, getting impatient with the Earth warriors, or really just Shujinko. Next we have Shujinko, which previews and articles and stuff and Konquest mode have hyped him to be this really really great fighter, maybe even better than Liu Kang. He makes the mistake of collecting the Kamidogu pieces for Onaga then later makes up for it by defeating the Dragon King. But Raiden, instead of going "Good job, just be more cautious next time.", he freaking electrocutes him and kills him! It sounds cool at first, but think:You have this guy whom you play as all throughout Konquest and you make him out as this ultimate warrior, then Raiden says "You moron, you almost doomed all the realms!" And kills him!
It would've been better if Shujinko had only been injured but got back on his feet(that's what ultimate warriors do) and fought Raiden. If we did that when he was younger and beat him(before he abosorbed EVERYONE'S fighting styles), he should take beat Raiden and convince him to give the mortals one more chance. Maybe fight alongside them against the next villain. Though the only two possible villiains for right now would be the One Being(though Shujinko destroyed all the Kamidogu) and Shao Kahn(if Havik's ending was real).

I'm tired of these "one night stand" bosses, too. We haven't had a good, solid, multi-installment boss since Shao Kahn (though, to his credit, Shang Tsung has been the boss in two non-consecutive installments, playable or not). I want to see Onaga stick around until the next game, or at the very least, the return of Shao Kahn.

I think it rocks that Raiden killed Shujinko. That was unexpected. Hopefully it happened.
I thought the story, for being so hyped, didn't turn out as well as I had hoped, either. I've only beat it so far as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Noob-Smoke, but I've read spoilers for the others. However, of the three I've earned, only Noob-Smoke's actually offers a storyline. The other two just seem to end abruptly.
