WEATHER and its effects in MKD

I've always thought this would be a nice add-on in an MK game. However, like some agree i would want there to be an ON/OFF option. Nice ideas bro........they remind me of the fatalities i was thinking for Rain lol.
I'm feelin the thunder storm idea. That would be awesome. Just imagine fighting in the middle of a storm with dark clouds, big bang noises, lightning flashing everywhere, and rain soaking the opponents. The rain would also have a nice effect on the blood that drips from the fighters. It would make it look less thicker.
A sandstorm would be good to IMO. I just thought of an idea added to the fog level.......it would be a great level to show secrets and secret characters. Perhaps there would be a point where theres TO much fog and you couldnt see much. For a good secret tease, you would be able to see some random shadows and such in the fog lurking around and walking. As you would get closer, the shadow would dissapear. IMO it would be a great way to unlock a secret character.

Good ideas TG, I will struggle to make a worthy reply.
Suffice to say you triggered an idea for me.
Ok here goes.
You fight in the sun against someone holding Nitara hostage. She is tied up under a tiny structure, barely protecting her from the sun. In fact she is smoking and moaning because all around the tiny structure is brilliant sunshine.
The object is to stop the enemy grabbing a stage weapon or using a special to knock down the structure and cause Nitara to burn alive and turn to dust from the sun!
Alternately, you could be the character trying to knock the structure over while your opponent is trying to protect her.

This is one of the greatest ideas i've seen in a long time!! I really love the idea of the wind influences the projectiles!!

yeah, i think thats a great idea! and i agree with what IcedOutLinKueiWarrior said too, this feature should be able to be turned on/off liek deathtraps, otherwise they could get annoying

wedgegold Wrote: Soul Calibur on Dreamcast had a few of these. Wind would really push you around. Ice you could slide right off the ring. Made it fun & challenging. |
Cool! I dont think I ever noticed the effects on that game, although its been so long since I played it Ive most likely forgotten.
Ice sliding out of the arena is annoying. You have the same on Soul Calibur2. Itd be interesting if it made you slide into a death trap however! That would really frustrate people, even if it is the same as a ring out in effect!
spike81 Wrote: Thats one of the best ideas Ive heard in weeks... love it. If those weather effects will inflict damage or have certain effects on the characters then there must definitely be an option to turn it off. But for the visual effects alone it would be spectacular. Weve already seen some but I would love it if the weather would change in mid fight. Or if at the right angle the sun would shine into the camera and blind the player (not the fighters) like in DOA3. Again I love your idea; this would really expand the gameplay experience to the next level. I hope to see something like this in MK7. |
Thanks, dude!
The visual effects would be stunning if they made them right. Weather features would look amazing and then the animation of the destruction too would be brilliant also!
I love the idea of the sun shining into the camera and blinding the player. That would be sweet!
Hopefully these things could be added to MK7.
GoldenSquirrelFist Wrote: It would be interesting if the heat from fireballs could melt snow ,dry out wet floor patches.Or the damage of fireballs would be decreased in cold weather. And in the same way sub-zero's freeze would be stronger in cold environments and weaker in hot sun,and duration of the freeze not lasting as long. |
Interesting ideas. It would take a lot of effort to put those in. the snow melting one would be helpful. Having projectiles dry puddles isnt really necessary, but it could be realistic.
And that idea on Sub-Zeros Freeze is great. It would add a lot more strategy to playing as him!

TomTaz Wrote: LOL I told you this thread would be a success Ty! Great job. If the weather were allowed to affect the outcome of the match as much as the fighters, the realism of MK would rise to a MUCH higher level. All of these things would affect REAL fighters if they were fighting under such conditions..this should definitely be illustrated in ANY fighting game that's going to have Lightning, Rain and even snow in stages. Very well done man! But then, I can't recall ever thinking differently of your ideas! |
Lol Thanks, Tazzer! Thanks for the support!
Higher level realism is one thing MK could do with. Weather effects are a new way of introducing them rather than just concentrating on the fighting aspects like many other threads have mentioned recently. I agree that these conditions should be represented in all fighting games. Theyre realistic conditions and are definite factors in the outcome of a fight.
Mk_FrEaK Wrote: As i told you before you posted this, I'm an Acid Rain fan!, that is such a great idea, melting all kinds of surfaces and debris falling around. 10/10 IMO! |
Thanks, bro! I know you love the acid rain idea. You love it too much! Lol

Id love to fight in the thunder storm you described! Itd be so cool. Seeing the characters hair all soaked and messy and their clothes all wet would be great. The watery mix of blood and rain would be nice. The constant barrage of rain would be atmospheric along with the thunder crashes and the flashes of lightning. Id love it!
A sandstorm would rule! And I like the unlocking idea with the fog. They had mist in the Krypt, so maybe they could use that idea in there! Searching for shadows and having them disappear unless you do something in order to capture them would be great. Awesome idea!
nice ideas tgrant. just a couple of things though.
mk6 with have an unprecedented level of stage interaction - we have seen the netherbelly and it has swinging corpses, groping prisoners with claws and teeth and at least two decks at different levels.
so without experienceing the current stage interaction it would be hard to say what extra interaction would be entertaining and what would be downright over the top and detracting from enjoyable gameplay.
the character specific stages where certain characters may get an advantage over others because of the conditions is also a good idea, however to be fair each character would need their own. its easy to think of stages for raiden, subby, fujin etc but what about kung lao? how is he to obtain a stage advantage? is bo raicho going to have a stage flooded with beer? or barf?
and another thing the weather conditions only really have an interactive effect in outside stages. what would need to be done for indoor stages so that they have a similar amount of interaction to outdoor stages? ppl would complain that some stages (indoor) were unfinished compared to the spectacular level of fx and interaction in outdoor stages.
i think that the mk team should nail gameplay and the combo system before attaching all the fancy bells and whistles, because if gameplay sux, then great stages and interaction aint going to keep you playing much longer.

Bo Rai Cho would be less effected by windy weather cause he's so heavy.
Kung Lao's hat throw could be strengtened by the wind-when he changes direction the wind could change direction too in his favour.
The indoor and outdoor levels don't need exactly the same level of interaction, levels can be rated easy-medium-hard if they have different levels of skill to useThis could be reflected in the difficulty settings in arcade mode-easy you get weak computer AI and no background interaction ,then all the way up to the hardest difficulty setting where computer AI is hardest and all the stage enironmentals are switched on-weather,stage fatalities etc etc.
Some levels can be not connected to any character so no bias is necessary.

Indoors environments can have changes to caused by interaction.Lights can be broken by jumping and kicking them reducing the light sources in the indoor stage.
The day to night change thing they did in soul calibur.I'd like that to appear too. This would effect temerature as we dicussed before, think desert boiling hot midday freezing at night.

Interesting idea! I like it! I think thatd be awesome! Id like to unlock Nitara in that way or maybe it could be a rescue mission or even apart of Konquest.
skarface Wrote: Hey Tgrant your acid rain has a special affect.....Cyrax, Sektor, Smoke....They are cyborge made out of metal practically so acid rain would just be like an impale |
I think acid rain would be too weak to hurt them that much unless it was really powerful. I dont think itd do such damage to metal so quickly.
fedegita Wrote: great ideas TG!! However, instead of the wind sending the projectile directly back at the sender, it should only slow it down so the oppoenent is given more time to dodge it, much to the sender's dismay and annoyance hehehe... |
Thanks, man! I like that idea. However itll depend on wind strength. If its weak, then you get your slowdown idea in effect. My idea of sending projectiles back would happen in strong wind currents.
Thanks also to Barakafanatic and Zerojinkui!

Not everyone needs some sort of weather specific trait. Not everyone had reversals in MKDA. As long as a balance is found between all characters with each effect then everything will be fine.
And yes, the weather interaction can only take place outside, although it can happen indoors if scenery is destroyed. Doors or roofs can be opened etc.
I agree that the gameplay needs working upon first. That should be the next focus for MK7.

Good idea for Kung Lao! The same could happen with Kitanas fans too.
Libra Wrote: i like the idea. i like the hail, thunder and fog idea. in MKDA, they did a great job adding the weather (like rain and hail) but it need to be like yours. i hope midway read this because your weather idea is so AWESOME!!!! |
Thanks! Im glad you liked the idea. They did have mild effects in MKDA and hopefully theyll tone them up and make them more interactive for MKD or maybe MK7.

Lol I dont mind! Its nice to have so many positive comments!
mk2us Wrote: I would also like that all MK:D stages will have day & night ambiance. Meaning that the characters fight on a same stage that some times is during the day and some other times it is during the night. |
That would be nice. We could see a stormy night or maybe even watch the sunset or sunrise in the background as we fight! Nice idea!

I think rain would work well on a rooftop stage. It's harder to keep balance, so people who try to fledge out a 20-hit combo suffer by falling off the roof.
Great thread tizzle, BTW

The temperature drop wouldnt be so notable in certain places. Youd need to be in really hot or really cold places to notice it!
I love the idea of smashing lights! I think thatd be awesome! Wind could blow candles out or maybe lightning could destroy walls with lights on!

Wind would also work well. Imagine a strong gust of wind knocking you over the edge! Youd either cling onto the ledge or fall down to your death.
Thanks man!

Advisement for MK7? If they took this as advice I'd be flattered! lol Hopefully they'll notice it and maybe act upon it for MK7.

Glad to hear it. I hope they do notice. This and your other ideas concerning gameplay. It would make their game SO much better. Who knows, perhaps you'll get lucky and they'll ask you to come help them plan the next game.

I wish! It'd be nice though. MK7 needs the gameplay focusing on and then maybe a little bit of stage interaction too. Adding weather effects can just be a minor part of the gameplay for now.
Thanks Tazzer!
