We’ve seen weather effects within the stages of the Mortal Kombat games for a long time now. We’ve seen rain and lightning effects in MK4. Snow was also in one of the arenas there. There have been many stages which could have had possible hazards and dangers associated with the weather. It’d be nice to see interaction with some of these weather effects in MKD.

Influences of the Weather

Acid Rain: Normal rain is harmless when just falling around you. With acid rain, you can have it eat away at trees or corrode other materials and buildings. In effect, for a stage like the Living Forest, trees would fall down in an attempt to crush you because the acid rain has destroyed part of them. Imagine other building structures suddenly and the debris hitting and damaging you.

Wind: So much can be done with the wind in stages. You can have strong gusts blowing against you slowing down your forward movement, or having it from behind pushing you towards your opponent. Now that MK is in 3D, we can have wind blowing from the side so in effect making you sidestep. This could result in attacks missing or you being thrown off balance at times.

Also, as in my Temple of the Elements stage, the wind can affect projectiles. If projectiles are used whilst you are being pushed away from each other, they will rebound and hit the sender. Projectiles are sped up if the wind is blowing the opponents towards each other.

And where are the tornadoes?

Fog/Mist: These weather forms could build up and fade every so often to obstruct the vision of both players. You’d essentially be fighting unawares. You could see shadowy images through the haze however. On some stages they can even hide death traps and you might walk into one or get knocked into one unawares.

Hail: Imagine huge hail balls falling and damaging you, and eve damage your surroundings and the ground in front of you. You could even have meteorite showers for more damage.

Lightning: We all know what this is capable of. So we should see it happening. Lightning can strike objects and destroy them, causing flying debris that damages you. Or it can destroy any platforms your on or even destroy barriers that you couldn’t break through before to allow you to knock the opponent to another level. Or if you’re in it’s path, strike you and cause severe damage.

Thunder: Where there is lightning, there must be thunder. And thunder in itself can be fun. Imagine it’s monstrous sound triggering avalanches or triggering buildings to suddenly give way.

Sun: Extreme heat could cause your characters to sweat and tire them out a little. We could see slower movement from fighters maybe.

Sleet: Sleet can be used in some arenas to provide a slippery surface. It’d make moving around harder and you’d be prone to tripping up if you moved too fast. Dashing attacks would see you slammed face first into the ground and any attempts to run would be stupid.

Snow Blizzards would be nice to see along wirh snow drifts maybe. Blizzards would hinder movement in all directions and the build up of snow could mean death trap and danger markers are hidden. Also, Blood would look really nice on the snow.

Your thoughts?
I think this would be really good, nice idea.

BUT i'd prefere if you could turn the weather on/off in the options cause' at times it could be slightly annoying.

But still, I like it glasses

Of course. The more skillful would have them on. Hazards and dangers are there as a test. Being able to avoid them and play well under the conditions they present shows how skillful you really are.

An option to turn them on and off would be great.

Glad you like the idea too, Bezou.

Fucking great Idea Tgrant, if only we had people like you working on the MK team, the game would be awesome - these weather effects to be used in MK7 - lets hope. MK7 to exceed the graphical capabilities of DOA3? The gameplay of MK7 to be deeper than any other fighting game? Lets hope.

But I wouldn't feel the need to turn these off, its adds alot more strategical elements to the game and adds more fun and makes you concerntrate and focus more, plus it would get bonus points for being great and looking great also.

Weather dynamics must be interactive just as Tgrant posted, great ideas dude, you should apply to be a story writer and game designer at Midway, I know everyone here would back you up all the way!

I agree.

Awesome ideas Tgrant!

I think all this extras would add a nice and even more realistic feeling to the game. I like the sun idea when characters get tired, and the water effects too. Thunder striking levels would also be a great addition.

I love all! grin But an On/Off option is a must.

Fantastic ideas tg! Ok I would like to have the option of turning them on/off, but I really like the concepts.

I like every idea you had but here are some of my thoughts/suggestions/additions to your concepts:

Acid Rain - Good idea, I like how it would corrode the arena, possibly forming new hazards. But would the fighters be harmed by it? Would fighters with heavier armour (Scorpion in MKD) be less affected than those who have less (Mileena MKD.)

Wind - I would like to see the wind be calm at some points and grow to be very strong and then decrease again - like in real life. It would be cool if you had your weapon out when the strong wind picks up, it would blow the weapon out of your hands. Perhaps Fujin could manipulate the wind in this stage like no other fighter could?

Fog/Mist - Very cool, could be great, making it difficult not knowing where your opponent is. It would be a great advantage if you had a fighter that could use invisibitly, to turn it on when the fog gets heavy, extra advantage for that person.

Hail - I would like to see it damage the fighters, small hail stones take off less heath than the big ones that hit you. Also the damage to the arena would be good.

Lighting - I like it in MK4, the Wind Realm was one of my favorite stages. It would be cool if Raiden had added powers in that stage. Perhaps he could manipulate the lightning in a way that no other fighter could?

Sun - I think fighters with heavy armour would be more sluggish as the fight progresses, than those with less armour. Check Scorpion and Mileena from MKD for examples.

Sleet - I like the idea of having a slippery surface that affects the fight. I think fighters with the slide move; Sub Zero, Reptile and Frost would have their slide enhanced. It would go further than usual.

Snow - It would be cool if the longer the fight progressed, the more snow would build up in the arena. It would make the fighters slower, as I'm sure you are all familiar with walking through snow. As you said, the blood would look good also, and the indentations in the snow of the knocked-down fighters would be a nice addition.

So I see your ideas, as beenficial to a fighter in some arenas, and hinderances in others. Heavy armour would be helpful in certain stages, while skimpy clothing would help in others. That way, it evens out and sometimes you'll be at an advantage, while others you'll be at a disadvantage.

I apologise for the triple post, can a moderator modify this? Thanks.
That sounds great if the weather actually interacts wih everything. I didn't notice the weather in DA, exept for one time in the House of Pekara, it wasn't hailing. Because I'm fighting, not admiring the beautiful weather.

The Lung Hai Temple and Netherbelly had rain, if I'm not mistaken.

By the three posts you made, I can tell you loved these ideas! lol tongue

Thanks for the support, but I don't think Midway would accept me! lol Who knows? lol

I'm glad you understand that these options would be better kept on. I would leave them on as they would make fights interesting! The challenge they'd present is excellent too and for them to be in there would be great.

They would look stunning if done right too. The sheer damage that lightning could do or even the wind and blizzards is amazing and would be so cool to see.

Glad you liked the idea! Thanks man!

TGRANT, once again I will praise you for your work, you have by far one of the most immaginative minds when it comes to your concepts, they way you look at stories and bio's is very unique, if everyone here thought of a story they would all have the same idea, and possibly be right, you on the other hand would dig deeper to find something inside of it. Your stories to me is better than reading a novel. I would love to further discuss this info with you. Send me a PM, and we can possibly discuss games, and other hobbies. Again, GREAT Work, Send this man some more dragon points!

Keep up the great work, I look forward to reading more

Thankyou, dude! Glad you like the ideas!

Now, my opinions on everything you said.

Acid Rain: It wouldn’t damage the fighters. Acid rain isn’t really harmful to human skin at all I believe. Armoured fighters could have their armour rusted, however given that acid rain isn’t really that strong, metal wouldn’t really be affected.

Wind: The wind calming at certain points is exactly how I’d have it too. I like the idea of the wind blowing your weapon out of your hand. That would be nice, especially if they added the weapon pick up feature from MK4 once again. Some characters could use their own weapon along with the opponents.

Fujin having a stronger influence here would be a great idea, however his attacks would take longer to pull off if he is going to use the wind in the background as his weapon. That would keep things fair.

Fog/Mist: This would be perfect for Smoke and Khameleon/Chameleon. They’d blend in perfectly. And I love the aspect of not being able to see much! It would be awesome!

Hail: Hail would damage you. I like your idea of damage dependant on size. That would be perfect.

Lightning: Raiden manipulating lightning is something that would be great too. Again, as with Fujin, his attacks from the lightning in the arena would take longer to launch.

Sun: Your example is exactly what I was talking about in terms of characters being tired. That would be perfect!

Sleet: The slide should also be faster! Also, escape moves would be harder to pull off unless it was a back dash in which case you could slide back on your feet.

Snow: Slower movement is exactly what this is here for. If ground damage was added then falls to the ground would be softened too. Falling from higher tiers can result in less damage if there is snow on the ground below.

Soul Calibur on Dreamcast had a few of these.

Wind would really push you around.

Ice you could slide right off the ring.

Made it fun & challenging.

That’s one of the best ideas I’ve heard in weeks... love it. If those weather effects will inflict damage or have certain effects on the characters then there must definitely be an option to turn it off.

But for the visual effects alone it would be spectacular. We’ve already seen some but I would love it if the weather would change in mid fight. Or if at the right angle the sun would shine into the camera and blind the player (not the fighters) like in DOA3.

Again I love your idea; this would really expand the gameplay experience to the next level. I hope to see something like this in MK7.

LOL I told you this thread would be a success Ty! Great job. If the weather were allowed to affect the outcome of the match as much as the fighters, the realism of MK would rise to a MUCH higher level. All of these things would affect REAL fighters if they were fighting under such conditions..this should definitely be illustrated in ANY fighting game that's going to have Lightning, Rain and even snow in stages. Very well done man! But then, I can't recall ever thinking differently of your ideas!
It would be interesting if the heat from fireballs could melt snow ,dry out wet floor patches.Or the damage of fireballs would be decreased in cold weather. And in the same way sub-zero's freeze would be stronger in cold environments and weaker in hot sun,and duration of the freeze not lasting as long.
