If you read some of my posts in which I long for Tsung to be in again, then you know I have been one of his greatest fans. And having seen he is back in MK vs DC, I was glad... at first.
Later, I saw on youtube a video showing a battle between him and Catwoman. Tsung's moveset and fighting style (and a definitely uninspiring fighting stance) are not to be given to a mighty sorcerer and an iconic character like he is. He can throw one to two fireballs, a Kai-style mortar fireball (hell, even his costume is a Fujin / Kai mixture), and pinch a bit of soul. Nothing of the ground fireballs, nothing of morphing, snake-resembling style is gone...
To prevent the questions such as: "Where have you been with your rants in MKDA? Tsung was like that back then as well!"; I tolerated all the minuses and frailties of MKDA's more decorated than powerful Shang Tsung, because there were plenty other reasons: Tsung came back after a longer pause as a winner over his longtime nightmare, Liu Kang; Tsung was no longer Khan's bitch; Tsung had a powerful fellow sorcerer to co-operate with, Tsung had more vivid fighting style (in fact, his style was the most vivid then), a sword, and was well-dressed (d'uh).
What's more, I had a strong hope Tsung would have to return after MKA way more powerful than he ever used to be... Just like it's reasonable to expect Sub Zero to be more powerful in MK vs DC than he was in, e.g., MKDA. And Sub Zero did become richer in moves; Tsung who is as old a character (gamewise) as Sub Zero did not!
Tsung's frailty and poor status (I'd bet he is now but a common citizen acquainted with magic, not any king of a royal sorcerer) are, to cut the long story short, not justified by any side advantages. I wanted a great first MK boss, Liu Kang's sworn nemesis and one of the most mystic personalities back and what I received is this mixture of Fujin / Reiko / Kai in appearence with poorer moves than ever....
...who will probably be kicked the shit out of by Liu Kang with equal ease.
