Why are the cutscenes so bad?

Seriously, I love MK, but these cutscenes are horrible. Why are we using IN GAME models for cut scenes. And we know MK is amazing in cinematics. Look at openings for Deception, SM, and Armaggedon. They are simply amazing. Then we go to the cutscene shots they are showing. They are not impressive at all. We are now using the Unreal 3 engine. These should be mind boggling. However, I am just left disappointed.

Well, first of all, we haven't actually seen the cutscenes in action yet.
Also, I discourage pre-rendered cutscenes. In this generation of gaming, we should be able to achieve the kind of quality cutscenes in real time, as the previous generation had pre-rendered.
But yeah, don't come to premature conclusions, we still haven't seen how the characters move, or the camera works. Still images say nothing.

why are so many (suppose2be)MK fans so quick to judge. Let the game come out and then post how you hate the cut scenes. Give the damn game a chance before you shoot it down.

Definitely not impressed so far, but the cutscenes might look much better in motion.

Using real-time cutscenes with in-game models is probably waaaaaaaay, way cheaper than rendering FMV's. Remember, this is a product Midway is selling. They need to keep overhead costs down as mush as possible to maximize their profits.

That too. I also like it when a game doesn't have to rely on FMV's. I really love the MGS franchise because of it. Not once have they used FMV sequences, it helps you to stay in the moment and not to get pulled out of it. Going from pixelated graphics, to beatifully rendered sequences, back to pixelated graphics.

Well, look on the bright side, there are way too many video games these days that render in-game graphics. So not only do the cutscenes look like they're in-game realtime, but if the character is, say, wearing an alternate costume, it's not gonna show up on those cutscenes.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY cheaper.

Midway does not make enough money - rather than Nintendo or Square-Enix - to have a constant FMVs throughout the game.

With Midway working heavy on the story cutscenes, I hope that we'll also finally get some decent character endings.

FMVs were more or less necessary in the PS1 days, and maybe the PS2 days for those extreme scene changes where a large piece of architecture needs to be destroyed and the PS2 is unable to perform it in an effective way.

But with the current generation, they're capable of some amazing things with real time graphics. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a perfect example.
So to pre-render a bunch of characters, (what seems to be) having a casual conversation would be very, very unnecessary.

The best real-time cut scenes I've seen were in God of War II.

Those were hot!

The sad thing is, a lot of the stuff in God of War 2 was pre-rendered with the real-time graphics. That's all pre-rendered, just without the high poly models.
That's what I'm talking about, when I say many games today pre-render real-time graphics. And as much as I love some of these games (Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Heavenly Sword, and yes, God of War 2), they all have cinematics which utilize the real-time graphics, in their pre-rendered cutscenes. That's why these movies are available in a "Theatre Mode" or whatever they call their cinematic gallery.
Personally, my best guess is that they had trouble synchronizing the voice acting to lip syncing. So they pre-rendered the cutscenes and synchronized the voices in Final Cut, or another movie editing program. Aside from God of War, in which case, I'd chalk it up to large scene and architecture changes. But it's still upsetting to earn bonus costumes and then not see them in cinematics.

these are the hater fans
even though they love the old games they just want to tear apart the new game before it comes out
if you don't know what i mean look at the sonic fans they reviewed the new sonic game just from the first trailer, screen shots , and "facts" (mostly just bullshit that they made up)

judging now is not right(i'm a MK vs DCU hater so don't blame me) but to be honest i wasn't impressed by the screenshot posted on Noob.com either.
so yeah for the little we'd seen nothing special,we till have to see the animations, camera angles, and voice acting which was always weak in previous MK games.
i'd rather to see barely decent animations but great voice acting, than excellent animations and terrible dubs.

You really can't judge a cutscene from a screenshot. I mean, I thought Shaolin Monks cutscenes would be good from the screenshots. How wrong I was.

Just because it's in-game doesn't automatically render the cutscene horrible. Look at Unreal Tournament 3-- most, if not all, of the cutscenes were in-game. Man, it looked pretty damn good... I guess it all just depends on how (well) they use the Engine. In this case we've seen screenshots, but as everyone else mentions, maybe it will look better in motion.

Graphics are not that important to me, but that’s in the case when they don’t vary so much from game to game. But when you see for example Soul Calibur’s graphics, and how smooth they are even at extreme close-ups, you start to see the difference in MK Vs DC.

Those new screenshots we saw are not impressive at all. The characters don’t seem consistent with the background, they seem as added sharp figures that are not blended in the whole picture. I don’t know any technical terms, I just see the overall result and try to describe it.

However, the gameplay graphics seem ok, I don’t have a problem with that, I actually like it.

I just don't think they have all the lighting tweaked in the cinematic. This is somerthing they'll probably end up fixing so that the shadows appear correct, etc.

Everyone keeps saying that this may not be the final product we're looking. I am pretty sure this is about as close to the final thing as we're gonna get. This game is pretty much a month away, there is no way they are still in early stages of tweaking it. But, I can only hope that isn't the final product, because the screen shots are not impressive and don't leave me with high hopes.

I won't even be bothered if the cutscenes don't turn out to be as good as I expected. It's a fighting game. Anything that gets added like long story cutscenes, is just a nice extra.

It's not early stages of tweaking. All you gotta do is adjust the shadows and the lighting, it's not that much work. And it's the only thing technically wrong with the screenshot.
I don't understand why people are saying they're PS2 graphics, that's just plain not true.
It looks better than Virtua Fighter 5, it looks better than Dead or Alive 4, and it looks better than the new WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2009, and I wouldn't call any of them PS2 looking.

If MK vs DC will really put good use of the engine they're using, I hope to god the in game cut scenes will look a little like this:

And how do you know they won't? Have you seen the cutscenes in motion? Maybe during the action sequences, the camera effects are gonna be amazing.
