I wonder who the main characters of MKSM-style game will be (assuming it's not Liu and Lao again). Maybe this time they can create an all new story instead of retreading over old material (and ruining old material in the process).

I think that article is incredibly misleading. There is absolutely no proof given that a Shaolin Monks sequel is coming out this year. It sounded more like speculation.

I take exception to the statement that it starred Liu Kang and Kung Lao 2 fan favorites. Emphasis on fan favorites. Kung Lao has more fans than Liu Kang to be sure but I would be willing to bet that those 2 were some of the last characters fans wanted to star in a game.

I would much rather have preferred Kitana, Jade, and Mileena hunting down Shao Kahn's enemies and conspiring against him for a mk adventure game.

that'd be cool but it'd definitely need more playable characters. i didn't like being forced to choose between one character that i hated and another i was kind of okay with.
