I just saw this on pressthebuttons.com:
Capcom has been going to the frivolous downloadable content well quite a lot lately, but the company's newly announced expansion for Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition for the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 goes above and beyond ridiculous. The game's first set of DLC is coming next week, and while the various incarnations of Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs Capcom 3 asked players to kick in more money for alternate costumes, Street Fighter III is offering extra color palettes for a fee.
“Color Pack 1” will be launching next week, on September 6th/7th. The price for this is $2.99, and buying this one pack will add 7 new colors for each character! The colors are available in pretty much all modes, but can’t be seen by people who haven’t purchased the DLC. (Also, we weren’t able to save the color palettes in replay files, so please be aware of that.)
Capcom has nickel-and-dimed its customers far too much with its fighting games over the years, but this Color Pack 1 is really absurd. $3 for extra colors is even more of an insult than overpriced DLC costumes and characters. There's been talk that this generation's DLC consists mostly of content that used to be included in the base game for no additional charge, but I believe that extra color palettes are a textbook example of content that used to be free and really should remain free. Also, take note that this is apparently the first Color Pack, too. There will surely be others on the way for an additional cost. It's disgusting and I strongly encourage everyone not to buy into this insult. Show Capcom once and for all that we won't stand for this kind of treatment.

I'm not surprised. Capcom has been doing this for a while. Even the producer of Mega man universe spoke out about Capcom's business model when he tried to get away from it wile developing Mega Man universe. Capcom wouldn'
t let him, they wanted to nickle and dime the game, and eventually canned it altogether, and fired him.
I'm trying to avoid buying anything from Capcom because their business model is getting absurd, if anyone doesn't agree just look at Marvel vs capcom 3.
No Capcom crossed the line when they charged players for Alt costumes on the Street Fighter 4 disk, and also charged $5 for Resident Evil 5 versus mode, which they claimed was "above and beyond the initial scope of Resident Evil 5".

Oh Crapcom, how you never fail to scam your fans.
$3 for colors that can't be seen by anyone who doesn't fall for the scam, how wonderful.
No, not costumes. colors. like how in SFII if you press a different button to select your character you get a different color. Yea, that shit again.

You do realize that you don't have to buy them, right?
I don't hate Capcom for using the same business tactic that most businesses use. The "Hey, they're stupid enough to buy this, put it on the market!" trick is kinda of the driving principle of the business world today. Does that mean I'm going to stop buying Oreos just because they released Double-stuffed Oreos with 10% more filling for10 dollars more? Nope. I just avoid the stupid ass more expensive Oreos.

There not costumes they colors. Like how in early MK games Scorpion, Reptile, Subby, Ermac etc. are all the same character model just different colors. Its basically like give scorpion the option to change his color to any of the other ninjas as a costume, that's what this pack essentially is.

THIS. Jesus Christ you people are over reacting. If you don't want to spend 3 bucks on colors, THEN DON'T BUY THE DLC. If it's so ridiculous, no one will buy the costumes and Capcom will understand they've crossed the line. If people do buy the colors for 3 bucks, then Capcom did good business. Either way, why on Earth should you care?
Chill out. Maybe start complaining about things that do affect you in some way.

I was being sarcastic
and at toasty yeah we get u dont have to buy but its bullshit charging u for character colors their not even costumes and they are on the disk
I mean even SF4 had them u just had to unlock most of them and this isnt new they have done plenty shit like this before
this is just bullshit and i wouldn't wanna support a greedy company that takes advantage of their customers and fans like that

The only real problem I have with Capcom is the on-disc DLC. I still maintain that the anti-Ultimate-Marvel brigade is ridiculous. You're getting 12 new characters for $3.30 each, plus new stages and a fixed netcode.
For fighting games, hard disc expansions are far more practical than DLC and are a lot cheaper in the long run. Casual fans may get screwed by not being able to tailor the content purchase, but you can't please both the casual and the hardcore. One of those bases was going to have to pay more in the long run anyway. At least with the route of the hardcore fan, we're getting more content and a fixed netcode.

But that's the problem though. Not too many understands that it's totally optional and that no one has to get it. Though for some reason, everyone's gotta make a big commotion when there's no need.
Like really, that's the whole issue with Freddy and all the other DLC characters for MK2011...
It's not really that big of a deal if no one complains about it as well as not buying it either.

To be fair though, a lot of people don't know they're buying on-disc content. I mean, people could say it's their fault for not doing their research, but that doesn't make it any less unethical.
And since most of the purchasers are the ones who don't know better, Capcom can ride this gravy train possibly forever. That's the real reason we complain.

So, you're telling me that capcom 'fixed' the fucking guess-the-button-to-get-the-right-costume thing? I'm no longtime capcom fanboy obviously. I actually LIKE that I don't hit a button and accidentally get some fucked up color. Ryu with a yellow gi? No thanks.
Sure I never played long enough to find out what the actual button is to get the standard colors was. But it shouldn't be a roulette wheel of shit alt colors until I figure out "OHHHH this game it's this button!".
Tell ya what, keep the colors. Less annoying.

You're going to have to explain this one better because what I understood can't possibly be what you meant.

I don't think that's entirely the problem, I think the really hardcore series fans will support any kind BS DLC regardless. Kind of like Apple fans that buy Apple products regardless. Looking through the top players in SSF4 and almost everyone one of them uses Alt costumes for their character which you have to pay for, and are on the disk as well.
First off, I HATE the stupid, pointless phrase of "If you don't like it, don't buy it."
That's like saying you bought a DVD, only to find that the extras are locked on the disc and you have to pay extra for them. Don't like it, don't buy it, right?
No, the thing is, we shouldn't HAVE to buy it.
Colors? It's a basic, commonly used feature that other games, INCLUDING OTHER STREET FIGHTER GAMES LIKE ALPHA 3, give out for free. SFA3 let you make your own colors even.
My problem with Capcom's DLC is there really is NO excuse for them to charge for this. What, did they run out of time? Out of money? The game was released in 1997! That's the N64 era! Ocarina of Time hadn't even been released yet! It's unbelievable they're charging DLC for a game that was not created with DLC in mind.
But this is Capcom's history. They asked for $20 for on-disc SF4 costumes when Dead or Alive Ultimate had over 120 free unlockable costumes. They had the nerve to charge for difficulty modes in Mega Man 9... which was only a basic feature every game included for free since the invention of multiple difficulty modes. They charges for on-disc Versus mode in Resident Evil 5, which was just turning on "friendly fire" and calling it a new mode. And then, of course, they screwed over every Marvel vs. Capcom 3 fan with on-disc characters, costumes, modes, and then ultimately said, screw it, buy a whole brand new game if you want all the fixes, balances, and features the original game SHOULD have had included.
"Don't like it, don't buy it"?
No. I want these features. And I would like them to be standardized and included in the initial purchase price, just as all modern cars come with windshield wipers, computers come with sound systems, and TVs come with channel changers.
And the fact that so many people keep saying "what's the big deal, it's only optional" has only motivated Capcom to do it again and again and again, year after year. I laugh at how originally they made laughably bad excuses and told outright lies like "it was beyond the scope of the initial game" or "we included them on-disc to make the DLC downloading times faster" or "it's only what the market demands". My personal favorite, straight from Capcom America: "Capcom in Japan is still coming to grips with DLC use and pricing. They're behind Western DLC policies, but we're sure they'll catch up." They said that in 2007, over 4 years ago.
I even remember them saying that they "could NOT do" Spectator Mode in MvC3 because "the game has too many on-screen characters"... and yet we see Spectator Mode is in the new version. I remember them saying "we thought about doing Phoenix Wright, but we decided he couldn't work in this game", and then turned around and held him hostage for an expansion. They blamed the Japanese earthquake for "changing their plans", but anybody whose ever studied game development knows that it's EASIER to create digital content than to spend much more time and money creating new boxes, discs, and shipping it out to retailers and stores. There's a reason Angry Birds and Minecraft are so cheap to send out to customers, so Capcom just lied to everyone, right to their faces, because they knew they could and people would pay $40 extra to play as Phoenix Wright, Strider, and Frank West.
Capcom's business model taints the whole industry, the industry I'm a part of. I hate the fact that good games are likely canceled by Capcom now because they can't figure out how to milk it (according to former Capcom-employee Keiji Inafune) or they betray the creator's wishes and modify their games endlessly for quick and easy cash (as Shinji Mikami stated), or they drive out their budding talent because their games aren't immediate smash hits (the entirety of Clover Studio) or because they aren't sequels to popular hits from the past (as Suda 51 claimed).
I hate it. I despise it. It's not the Capcom that used to exist, but the current one has driven away all their talent and has fallen back onto a mindset of taking advantage of customer's ignorance and/or brand loyalty because of how effective they USED to be.
This is not the same company that took risks and made beloved games like Power Stone, Onimusha, Strider, Captain Commando, Final Fight, Okami, Killer7, GodHand, Breath of Fire, Dino Crisis, Viewtiful Joe, Mega Man Legends, Maximo, Darkstalkers, Rival Schools, or Demon's Crest.
This is the company that, like Square Enix and their overbearing dependence on Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, can only release 900 iterations of Street Fighter (or Street Fighter crossovers) or Resident Evil. For the life of me, I can't name an original idea for any game they have in the making. It's all retreads preying off nostalgia and brand recognition and charging for features and modes other games, including their own, used to include at no additional charge.
And that's the antithesis of creating good games.
Gabe Newell of Valve fame proudly stated "our focus should be on the quality of a game, not the pricing model of a game." Someone should tell that to Capcom... maybe then they might stop selling broken, bare-bones games and charging people $40 for the expansion that addresses these problems that's incompatible with the version you bought.
