Alternate Colors - Very little to no work, not worth money.

Alternate Costumes - Tons of work, worth money.

You're going to have to explain this one better because what I understood can't possibly be what you meant.

Basically, Capcom is selling people content they already bought. Rolling with Garlador's example, imagine if you bought "Platoon" on DVD, but in order to hear the director's commentary, you had to buy a password to unlock it.

That's what's going on here, except it's a software key instead of a password. The difference is that with password, you KNOW you're getting screwed. A software key is not so obvious. When soccer mom Sally purchases Rose's alt in SSF4, she probably thinks that the data is on Capcom's server and the content is being downloaded to her console. Truth is that she already has the costume. She had the costume as soon as she got the disc. Sally doesn't realize she's buying the same thing twice.

Can anyone blame her? I would have thought the same thing had I not browsed fighting game forums. That's why nothing is going to change: because soccer moms don't browse forums and will never know they're getting screwed when they buy this shit for their kids. The only people who are even aware of the issue are small vocal group of nerds.

I don't think that's entirely the problem, I think the really hardcore series fans will support any kind BS DLC regardless. Kind of like Apple fans that buy Apple products regardless. Looking through the top players in SSF4 and almost everyone one of them uses Alt costumes for their character which you have to pay for, and are on the disk as well.

They're part of the issue, and I'll admit, I'm one of them. I bought half the costume packs for SSF4 as well as Shuma and Jill. Thing is, the fighting game community makes a smaller percentage of consumers than people think.

I don't justify my support for on-disc content, but the reason why I do throw down the money is because I know a failed boycott when I see one. Unless the masses get educated, withholding revenue isn't going to do much. Also, most Capcom DLC is pretty well made. I get a lot of happiness out of those costume packs. Also, I can't have my hentastic trio team in MvsC3 without Shuma Gorath.
But ya know, it's not really the act itself that bothers me. It's the fact that they're misleading their demographic to do it. I could care less about the $4.99; it's the marketing deception that I find intolerable... even though I tolerate it.

This is more or less the crux of it right here; this sleezy marketing.

But like I said, I don't even buy Capcom games anymore (although I did buy SF4 at launch). So...no MVC3...no SSF4...no SSF4-AE...etc.

SF is a laughing stock. Still trying to add all these cool things from an already released SFIV. SSFIV, SSFIV-AE. Enough Capcom, Enough, I'm sorry but SF was cool to me when SSFIV was released then they went mental.
Thats big business for you...

An example if I can get a little of topic for a second. I remember when I bought my first real “Smart phone” with T-mobile . They were toting that the Mytouch 3G was there new big phone. So I went and got one because my other phone was crap. I thought I was set for a while. Than a few months later they came out with the MyTouch 3G Slide with the newest version of Android. They’ll tell you what you have NOW is the best. Then come out with something better. Leaving you behind in the cold...

But that can apply to anything really. Point is they’ll tell you anything to your face. Then a few months later come up with something newer and great. Thats just how it works.

But paying for something you use to get for free like costume colors is pretty ridiculous. But I don’t even have SF4 so it doesn’t affect me. But this will continue to happen and someone will buy it and so and so on. But, There is no way to predict the market and whats going to happen once you buy something. And it seems almost impossible to keep up with technology these days. So just go with something your gonna get a lot of use of and enjoy it.

I think I’ll end this here. Cause I could go on all day about it.

@ Garlador Thank You for that, finally someone realizes that it should not be optional it should be there on disc already. UMvC3 is a ripoff. Capcom should have listened to that poll if they can add the top 4 for the street fighter 4 poll they can damn well listen to the MvC3 poll. the only good additions are Vergil and Strider. when they added Phoenix Wright they basically said hey you people that really want Mega Man X well were gonna give you this human that is pretty insignificant instead.

No, they're not. DLC that's "already in the game" is only a sin to people who are either incapable of basic logic, or who are looking for something to bitch about.

What sleazy marketing?

What on Earth is wrong with you people. So because it was free in other games, it's now ridiculous if it's not free for this game?
Nevermind the fact that you already have 10 free colors per character in the game, I guess.
Back in the day you didn't get online play for free, and now you do. Is that also ridiculous?

I must ask, why did you put the phrase "already in the game" in quotations? Are you implying that the content isn't really on the disc? Because the presence of on-disc DLC is an observable fact.

And if you're not implying that, then tell me if you think it's okay for companies to sell passcodes that unlock disc content (such as director commentaries or making-of footage). If you say yes, and you're perfectly okay with that, then I will argue no further.

But if you say "no," then your pushing a double-standard. At the very least, EXPLAIN what the difference is.

I'm not saying I totally disagree with on disk DLC. I can justify it to some extent (Soul Calibur 4 Yoda & Vader), It's just "Stupid" stuff that they nickle and dime the community for like costume packs. Especially where you have consumers buying limited editions of these games at $80+ as it is, and your still not getting access to all the content. The alt costumes where entirely free in the arcade version of SF4, but yet they charged console versions. It's not even that they charge for them to some extend, but it's the fact that they broke it up to 4-5 different packs. I probably would haven't have a problem with them charging $5 for all the alt costumes in one pack, but to basically charge $20 for content that was already on the disk.

To be honest I could care less if it's already on disc, even if there is a costume that's on disc and I can'y access it because I have to buy a pack well then fine i'll buy it. there's really nothing we can do guys, even if you boycott with 600 people chances are it's still going to fail. If it's on disc then oh well it's on disc. Personally i'm buying UMvC3 just because I fell in love with the series when I was 4 years old getting a DreamCast and playing the hell out of MvC2, also because Frank West is in now.

All im saying is there's really not much we can do and if you think the 3 bucks is overpriced well that's just business.
