- Why 'Ant-Man' Director Edgar Wright Exited Marvel's Superhero Movie

After the abrupt May 23 exit of Edgar Wright, the geek-favorite filmmaker behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, from Marvel Studios' long-gestating Ant-Man movie, the studio has insisted the Paul Rudd film will be finished in time to make its July 17, 2015, release date.

But while a source close to the studio says a search for a new director is underway, some observers believe Marvel president Kevin Feige will have a hard time pulling together the risky film in such a short time frame.

The challenges are clear in finding a director who can pick up a project infused with Wright's vision for years. In addition, sources say the film's key crew -- its heads of departments -- departed when it became clear production would not begin as scheduled July 28. Rudd's reps say he's still in, and a source close to the production says all key crew positions will be filled shortly.

Wright, 40, is an irreverent British filmmaker, and sources say Marvel had been unhappy with his take on Ant-Man for weeks. Originally set to begin shooting June 2, the production had been put on hiatus while Feige ordered revisions of the script that was co-written by Wright and Joe Cornish. According to sources, Wright had been willing to make revisions earlier in the process. But the new rewrites took place without Wright's input, and when he received Marvel's new version early during the week of May 19, he walked, prompting a joint statement announcing his exit "due to differences in their visions of the film."

Certainly the kind of story I was expecting to hear.

Wright is 40 years old and he wont get at that Marvel Studios pay day over "creative differences"? How petty. Get with the program and change your vision. Move up.

Petty isn't the word. It pays to remember Ant-Man has been on the burner for a very long time, and Wright was attached for an extensive period. For a long time, he was the virtue that was driving the whole ship. This was years before the establishment of Marvel Studios, and it seemed like it would be a key step forward from the seminal, but rote films with FOX and Sony. This was going to be a chance for (what was once known as) The House of Ideas to show some of the spirit and inventiveness of the comics - on screen.

Rah rah formulaic third-act maskless face-offs and special effects, and all that, but at some point, it's got to be about the quality of the work.

We don't really know what happened. We can't speak for anyone involved. We can only speculate, and when you've been the driving force behind an odd ball project for that many years, it's going to be tough to accept studio interference of any kind.

Even though I know the film will be fine, the trailer was a little underwhelming for me.

I guess I was hoping that a slight remnant of Edgar's original 60's vision was kept intact.

- Marvel Releases New Swarm of "Ant-Man" Images

After a teaser trailer that had the Internet going "Huh," Marvel Studios has released a new wave of high res photos from this summer's "Ant-Man."

The Paul Rudd-led addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn't revealed too many big plot points, but between the initial trailer footage and these pictures, fans can get a good look at the hero Scott Lang himself (both in action and in concept art form), his mentor Dr. Henry Pym (Michael Douglas), his love interest Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and some behind-the-scenes shots of Rudd and director Peyton Reed.

Lots more in the article. Check it out!

I liked the trailer for what it was, the same way I liked the Star Wars trailer. There wasn't really anything to it for anyone looking for any sort of explanation. For those of us just wanting to see SOMETHING it was exciting.

- Ant-Man: EW preview

They say a film is only as good as its villain, but maybe they should change that to a villain and his suit. In Marvel’s Ant-Man, Paul Rudd plays jailbird-turned-superhero Scott Lang, who has the power to shrink himself and control his six-legged namesakes, thanks to gear designed by inventor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas). But Lang’s armor is positively pacifist compared with the more advanced suit worn by the nefarious Darren Cross, a.k.a. Yellowjacket (Corey Stoll). “Hank Pym’s Ant-Man suit doesn’t have a single weapon,” says director Peyton Reed (Yes Man), “whereas Yellowjacket is armed with plasma cannons.”

That would make the first big showdown between the foes, pictured here, a decided mismatch, right? Maybe not. “Ant-Man is very fast when he’s small,” he says. “Also, when he shrinks, he increases his density, so he’s got increased strength.” (Not to mention that ant-whispering power, which plays a crucial role in Lang’s attempt to steal Yellowjacket’s garb.)

Ehhhhh. Always thought of the density gimmick as The Atom's.

It's an easier way to limit the technobabble on Pym Particles, I'm sure. I think people would give up on the whole gravity warped mass quantum mechanics spiel as convoluted, despite the fact that if he ever grows the density thing should work in reverse.

I really thought they'd just simplify everything and keep it about getting small and hanging out with ants. Nothing more, nothing less. Not really a big deal, but this one seems riddled with lots of little things that don't quite feel right.

New trailer!

They're slowly flushing out the comedic tones, and while I was worried about it before, I'm easing up a bit now. From what we see in the trailer, the humor will probably be on Iron Man levels, which makes sense for Scott Lang. Moving on, the visusals look very nice. Certain small shots you can tell they had physicsal sets vs entitely green screen. I like that. And the ants, my God do I love the scene with the ants.

- WHEDON Calls EDGAR WRIGHT's ANTMAN Rejected Script 'Best Script Marvel Ever Had,' Has No Plan to Return to Marvel

... Whedon goes into detail on several issues he's had with Marvel — as a fan, as a consultant, and as a director. Chief amongst them is the decision not to go ahead with Edgar Wright's vision for Ant-Man. When asked about the departure and his thoughts on it, he was surprisingly open.

“Only that I don’t get it. I thought the script was not only the best script that Marvel had ever had, but the most Marvel script I’d read. I had no interest in Ant-Man. [Then] I read the script, and was like, Of course! This is so good!" said Whedon. "It reminded me of the books when I read them. Irreverent and funny and could make what was small large, and vice versa. I don’t know where things went wrong. But I was very sad. Because I thought, This is a no-brainer. This is Marvel getting it exactly right. Whatever dissonance that came, whatever it was, I don’t understand why it was bigger than a marriage that seemed so right. But I’m not going to say it was definitely all Marvel, or Edgar’s gone mad! I felt like they would complement each other by the ways that they were different. And, uh, somethin’ happened.”

It just seems destined to be part of the lore of this movie.

You've gotta wonder! Maybe Aussies are just too honest to steal them (in plain sight). They'll wait and steal the whole movie later.

Sort of old news, but I think it got kinda buried. Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish retain sole credit for the Ant-Man Script. This either ends the Ant-Man director's saga, or will lead to a bunch of credit jockeying if the movie is either a hit or a bomb.

Either way, this means that Wright and Cornish's script was intact enough in the final product that those involved in the rewrite don't even get credit WITH them.

But seriously, we all know what happened here. Marvel wanted more on the nose Tony Stark-ish humor, rather than British absurdism. The re-writes were probably just the name jokes and some slapstick.

- Ant-Man Poster Carries On a Shameful Marvel Tradition

One very shameful tradition they have: Lazy movie posters.

These posters aren’t always badly photoshopped (though some are), but they have definitely found a boring formula with which they seem intent on continuing. For example, take the newly released poster for Marvel’s next cinematic exploit, Ant-Man.

This could've been laid at the feet of any of the Marvel movies, but I guess Ant-Man's copping it because it's a little less given than the repeating Avengers group shots. Check out the article if you want the full effect of scrolling through damning evidence (if you don't remember the posters, especially).

Very interesting. I wonder if we'll start to hear exactly how it all shakes down. I don't really think of Edgar Wright as enforcing a trademark comedic style, so I tend to think there was more in contention than jokes. My suspicion is they wanted to generally flatten the whole thing out and enforce some architectural impositions. Which Wright was there for. Which might explain the strength of his name on the script.

- "Ant-Man" Screener Reactions Confirm "Must See" Post-Credits Scenes

With "Ant-Man's" release date fast-approaching, Marvel Studios has begun screening the film for members of the press. Following last night's first press screening in NYC, a number of reactions emerged on Twitter alluding to everything from the film's quality to its tone, wider place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and even a few hints about what takes place in the film's post-credit scenes.

Some interesting early reactions. Couple of big notes:

Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
First reference to Spider-man (presumably minor) and two post-credits scenes.

I remember when Peyton Reed was announced as it's new director, I kinda new that it wouldn't be a train wreck due to his involvement with an early version of the 2005 F4 movie, which is much better than the final product.

From what I've read of fan reaction (especially James Gunn) and leaks on /co/ this seems like it's going to be amazing.

- The Joke That Had to Die So That Ant-Man Could Thrive

“There are a lot of decisions along the way about this,” Reed says. “All over the advertising was that moment between Pym and Scott, where Pym says, ‘I need you to be the Ant-Man.’ Scott asks, ‘Is it too late to change the name?’ We cut it out of the movie, because any kind of joke like that only needed to happen once, and the better version of it is in a fight scene, when he’s asked, ‘Who are you?’ ‘I’m Ant-Man,’ he says. ‘What? You’ve never heard of me? Of course you’ve never heard of me.’ He’s saying who he is, being self-depricating and acknowledging who he is. The other joke [we cut] felt more like, ‘Hey audience, we know that, on the face of it, this seems stupid.’ This movie has to believe in itself, and that’s one of the beauties of having Paul Rudd playing Scott Lang. His whole self-depricating thing and reactive style of comedy serves as the eyes and ears of the audience. There is something inherently absurd, conceptually, about Ant-Man, which I love. Paul’s reactions are probably similar to what an audience member’s is going to be, and that’s a great strength of Paul’s.”

It's a good call. Lots more discussion in article. Check it out.
