You need a Mod chip.I dont know how that works though.

A music CD or an Xbox game? As far as a music CD goes, you have to burn it a special way, on a specific medium (CD-RW or DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-whatever works best). The Xbox DVD-ROM drive is very picky with what CDs it accepts, and it almost never accepts CD-Rs. For an Xbox game, you won't be able to play it without a hacked BIOS of some sort (modchip, TSOP flash, etc.)

From what I understand (and my litte experience with it), you can PLAY burned CDs in an Xbox...you just can't burn those tracks onto your hard drive.
So unless there's some sort of mod to get around this, you can't record 'em to your console.

It could be the drive you have:
Launch Hardrive=Thompson(it has a narrow gap in the disc tray)
Mid-Xbox=Panasonic drive(I think that's what it's called. It has a wider gap in the disc tray)
Current Xbox=Samsung drive(Can play CD-R's,has a big hole in the middle of the disc tray.)
Did you buy a Xbox from a department store like Toys R us or Wal-Mart?Or did you buy it from Gamestop or Funcoland?

Electroic Botique for the first and i think wal-mart for the second one also the dray as a huge hole in the middle goes from the middle to the end of the tray. its pretty big

You have the newest model of Xbox then.If you want to use CD-R's the best thing to do is find someone who knows about Mod Chips. There Illegal though.

Get a modchip and help on what they are, how to install, whatever...here: modchips
They are in a legal grey area, the site still sells them and there is so so little chance anything will be done about you, 1 person, that its pathetic. They are not illegal however as of yet, because the supreme court hasnt officialy ruled that. Go here for more on what all you can do with modchips on the xbox, more info than the above site gives you, forums, etc. xbox scene

You would need a bios hack over the modchip, yeah i remember now so thats more reason to go to that second site i linked too.
I dont see a problem with me linking to all that shit since its not illegal before anyone says anything think about that. We dont know this person will be burning games off the internet or anything, he could be just wanting to back them up, isnt that right?

It may be that yout burning the discs at a speed that makes the Xbox not able to read them, i'm not sure what the Xbox reads at, but if you burn above that you get problems it's the same for PS2 or any other Stereo system, burn the discs at a lower level, around 8X works the best, it will take longer to burn, but you may not get any problems, it works for me.

do u use cd-r's?

Man a modded Xbox is probably the best thing you can do for it... you wont have access to XBOX live, unless you wanna get caught... but you can still play lan games through Xbconnect or system link, plus you can dl games str8 into your HD which is always great... free stuff rules...

A mod chip for the XBOX won't effect the reading ability of a CD-R when it comes to music.
It will allow backup games on CD-R to work though.
It really does come down to which model disk-unit is in your xbox. Some are very picky and won't work all the time. Also, different brands of media can also have different effects.
I've noticed on my own system that Sony CD-R's work alot more often than Verbatim & Imation. TDK also aren't too bad from my own experience.
