I just realized that when fall rolls around, the next major installments in both series will make their respective appearances at stores. Silent Hill 4 and Resident Evil 4 will be out at practically the same time... so... which one would you get, given the choice between one or the other? Which survival horror game shall emerge as the champion of shocks and suspense? Ooo.. I can't wait. Fatality.

I'm getting RE4! The series has a storyline that everybody is still trying to understand. Plus the characters are some of the best concieved of characters in any game. Take Wesker for example! Also, the cut scenes are so engaging that they feel like a movie. I feel that the games are really movies in a way.

Silent Hill is wierd, scary, and all out freaky! The problem with the series(as I see it) is you don't really get involved with the story as much the experience of that's happening to you. There seems to be a sort of disconnect that I feel with the story.

Anyways... I think RE4 will come out on top.

hmm not sure....RE is classic, but Silent Hill has slightly cooler graphics and better music in my opinion. The only thing I don't like about SH is the camera and the moving controls. It seems too damn hard to even turn around and run sometimes. But SH3 is a very pretty game and I enjoy it. RE however, is classic. I'm torn I suppose.

not having a ps2 or GameCube can make that decision for you... I do hope SH4 is good, the sequel to the third seems to be coming awfully quick...

Ahh, Resident Evil 4 all the way! I'm not into the Silent Hill series but I'll try it out sometime... That is a zombie game right? Or is it just dead people mystery crap?

Which one? Resident Evil 4 AND Silent Hill 4 won't be having your standard zombies. Silent Hill 4 has 'demons' for monsters, and Resident Evil now just has genetic experiments gone mad. Fatality.

i like how you down sh before playing it. its an awsome game, you should try it. monsters arent zombies, they are strange. i dunno what they are, and i havent beaten the third yet. but they look like glossy manaqins put together by a crack-head. they walk around and swing their leg-for-arms. theres plenty of other enemies but who knows what they are? the only prob w/ this game is that the story line is so blurry, how did these monsters appear, who sent that letter to james. well, the last quest may have been answered in sh2, but i forget. and i havent beaten sh3 yet, but i heard it explains more.

If RE4 was just another walk around Racoon City, I wouldn't even bother with it, but since they seem to be going in a whole new direction with it I'll probably be picking up both of them. But I'm partial to Silent Hill. Much much scarier.

Im most likely gonna get RE4 1st then maybe after a while get SH4. I like the RE series more cuz Ive been playin those since I wuz young (started at 9ish. Now 14) and played every single one that had to do with the story line.(Not the Survivor/Dead Aim games)I feel that RE4 is gonna be sweeet cuz of the new elements added such as the A button doin most of the work and how you can tip ladder, shoot thru doors and the 'monster' AI (Any read the GS preview on RE4?Has part of AI and Dayum!!!)
Overall RE4 seem likes the game Im gonna get.
SH4 is fun and scary but the story line to me seems a bit bland. Every single one had to do with some person is stuck somewhere and they must get out. You knoe? Like SH3 (which iz freaky az hell BTW) wuz a story where the main gilr iz stuck in a shopping mall and she has to get out.
To me the sotry line iz bland so RE4 iz gonna be sweeeeeeeeeeet!!!!
But I mite still get SH4

Silent Hill 4, baby!
Resident Evil 4 may have better graphics, better originality, bigger fan-base, more intuitive enemy A.I. and control scheme, revamped graphics, kick-@$$ hero, open-ending play scenarios, great sound, and rocket launchers, but, in the end...
Silent Hill is just scarier.

I disagree. Resident Evil can be just as scary as Silent Hill. Resident Evil has a much better "jump" factor, but is less on the "psychologically disturbing" level. Take your pick. Fatality.

I would rather be deeply disturbed to the point where I have trouble sleeping at night, than just jumping because a zombie popped out in front of me. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Resident Evil, I am a fan of both games, I just happen to feel that Silent Hill will always outdo Resident Evil, as far as real horror goes. Me and my friend have argued this since '99, so I'm not going to change my mind.

It's sort of like comparing Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" with "The Exorcist". Night of the Living dead scared people with shock value, while The Exorcist's horror was more... underlying, disturbing, and psychologically scarring. As a horror game, I think that Silent Hill is the undesputed champion. No game has yet come close to the dark, sad atmosphere, the claustrophobic dark and fog, the sexually grotesque creature designs, the surreality of the story-line, the weight of cults, demons, and sacrifice, and, of course, the disturbance of the MAIN characters. Not a soul that enters Silent Hill is "normal", and they never leave "normal." They are, IMO, the most horrific part of the game.

Resident Evil is still B-movie. Resident Evil 4 will be B-movie. It will have amazing graphics, but the entire "scare" will come from overwhelming odds and jumping creatures through doors. A shock that will quickly fade. Resident Evil 4, though, will probably be a better GAME. It's meant to be fun to play (although the control scheme would argue), and Silent Hill is not a "fun" game to play, but rather a chore, as each moment builds mind-blowing tension and fear, making it a game that you don't want to play, but can't stop, because the story-line and characters are so engaging, the atmosphere so addictive. You have to work through that, as opposed to just playing it.

Conclusion for me: Tie.
Silent Hill is the definitive horror series game.
Resident Evil is a better game in design and originality.
It balances out for me, but I'm sure one preference would out-do another.

Fatality.

I know what you mean about Silent Hill, there is something that keeps drawing me back to it, even though I do not really want to play it. It is weird to be quite honest with you. The dark atmospheres just terrify me, to be quite honest they creep the living hell out of me. So my soul will forever be intertwined with the town of Silent Hill, whether I like it or not. <--- I know that sound gay, but c'mon just humor me.

It iz true that SH has a higher scare value and RE has relied on some lame ass wayz to scare you but maybe in this 1, theyll add new ways.
Like maybe thoze physco 'monsters' will acually surprize u and scare the shiznit outta you.
And plus in the 1st trailer eva shown of RE4 (i think it wuz anyway), they had some Shadow Monsters and thingz like a childz doll and things like that so really, Sh/RE4 are pretty much tied in the scare area. Its the little thingz that make the game scary.
True, that screwed up mutationz chasing you are freaky like a mutha (like those manikin dollz ...scary) but RE has the little thingz that scare you so its tie.
And this haz nuttin to do with this thread but remember that time when in SH3, the girl manikin dollz head fallz off afta a scream!!! And the time when you knock on the toilet door and someone knocks back and then it openz and no ones there!!!! F*cked up shiznit.
But again thas physchological scare value and RE has little things that scare you.....
But I guess that in the end, it mainly comez down to wut scares you more....
And yeah I lied, it had sumthin to do with this thread

It's funny how you guys talk which one is scarier than the other. What about gameplay? I prefer RE for gameplay. But it's true SH is scarier in the psychological level. If I have to choose, RE all the way.

It iz true that gameplay iz very important but the scare factor addz to the game rite?
If SH didnt have its scare factor then it wouldnt be any fun and have no point. Itd just be you runnin arounbd solving puzzles and killing monsters. Ohhhh so scary...
So gameplay iz important but scare factor iz also a equally important factor...

if anyone here has seen the new high-res 4 minute trailer of RE4, then there's no possible way you could prefer it over Silent Hill 4.

I find the whole "room" concept of SH4 to be pretty lame, like a whole hub level, as if it's some Mario or platformer game.

Silent Hill 3 sucked, not very challenging, and the scariest place on earth....A MALL! DUN DUN DUNNN!

I liked both SH 1 and 2 though.

But RE4 man.....

Well, it's because SH and RE have never really been champions of pure and simple gameplay. It's always been the dark atmosphere and cinematics that give these games their value. If these games weren't scary they wouldn't be fun at all.

I'll have to go with Resident Evil 4. Looks better than ever. I loved the original released for the psx, the 2nd and 3rd weren't as good. Code Veronica was pretty good, specially with Albert wesker being around once again.
The thing that looks really interesting about RE4 is that there is no Zombies. The villagers act weirdly but they aren't zombies. After watching the new trailer, the enemies AI looks great, the follow you the acttack you in groups, if one is attacked, he'll call the others for back up. The greatest thing is that you can aim on the enemies boby parts.
I'm defenitly getting RE4.
