The controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) has been effectively killed in the US Congress.

SOPA, which would have required Internet companies to censor Internet links to sites deemed to be breaking copyright, inspired massive protest, including criticism from President Obama. Today, Republican senators have decided to withdraw the bill.

Good shit America. Now we need to take out the lesser known but equally silly acronym PIPA.

It was really worst than just censoring the internet, It effectively criminalized posting or linking of copyrighted material. Lets say you filmed the 6 min prologue to the Dark Knight Rises at MI:GP and uploaded to Youtube, or even linked it on facebook from another site. Under SOPA you would be held criminally responsible and could face up to 5 years in prison and a 10,000 fine.

It also meant that investors could be held criminally responsible as well. There was a survey that this bill would just kill jobs because investors would rather take a chance investing in a bad economy rather than a good start up because of the legal consequences that SOPA would have created.

Thank God.

I wonder if Wikipedia will still be doing their blackout for just PIPA then.
The banner is still up...

Great news, anyway!

I hope SOPA dies out soon then, if it has indeed not been killed yet.

This is why many Americans feel they'd be better off with a "do-nothing Congress" than a Congress that actually gets legislation passed.

Well that's good news. I don't think it's completely dead yet but it seems close. But your PIPA was the sister bill to SOPA and could be just as dangerous. This isn't over. To the streets I say!

its a sad reality that the idea of passing useful, helpful legislation is not even an option for most.

Well today's protest of various websites "blacking out" in protest seems to be working: several more congressmen have dropped support of SOPA, or at least "re-evaluate the issue of online piracy":

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/19/technology/web-protests-piracy-bill-and-2-key-senators-change-course.html?_r=1&partner;=rss&emc;=rss&src;=igw

The scary part is how many of congress seem to be under (or pretending to be under) the delusion that the heart of online piracy lie within some organized "foreign" crime ring.
