Wow, that's really creepy... One of my cats had to be put down today, at about 4 PM EST to be more specific (44 minutes before your post). The poor thing was partially wild (we helped raise her when we started looking after her mom, who is pure wild), and she basically called our backyard home.
She was poisoned at some point over the past few days, and when my sisters found her in the yard, she was suffering horribly, her teeth worn, her lips decaying, her eyes barely open, and her nose running like crazy. The vet said there was nothing that could be done...
Though she was alive for only two years, she was the closest thing to a pet we had in almost two decades, and since we helped raise her since she was a kitten... It's somewhat painful knowing that I wasn't there.
My family and I loved her like she was our own, and she basically was. Hearing that she was poisoned just disturbs the fuck out of me though, and I can only say that to whoever did it, I hope that you experience the pain that you're putting my family through right now.
Yes, I know it's just a cat, some animal, to people, but when you invest love into a living creature, human or not, it hurts to see it die.

I know exactly (and I mean EXACTLY) what you are going through.
A couple years ago, the dog that's been around since I was born, was found by one of my brothers in the backyard, almost exactly how your cat was found. We took him to the vet right away, and the vet said he would have to put him down. The vet said he was poisoned.
What I still find weird to this day is; he was on a leash tied to a tree for about 1 month (we let him off under supervision) while we were building a fence.
I have no clue how he was poisoned, maybe a plant or a bug or something.
Hang in there dude, and I think it's safe to say that no one did this on purpose, seeing as how the EXACT same thing happened to me (creepy also) I think these things just happen on accident.
