Programmers call it a hash sign.
So it only makes sense that the internet culture calls it a hashtag, since, ya know... programmers made those stupid social networking websites.
Oh, and to the OP... welcome to what I call LIFE.
My oldest brother (and there are 8 of us) got married and had a kid last year. His baby, my niece, is 15 months old. It's the weirdest thing because all of us have sort of been in different places for a while now, geographically I mean, and ya know, we're all doing our thing. Acting, writing music, working at coffee shops and modeling and what not. We all have or have recently had girlfriends. Some serious some not. Our mom had another kid 3 years ago, her 8th.
And suddenly, our oldest brother is married and has a kid. "Getting older," so to speak, was happening very slowly before, but this sudden shock of like, "Our brother has a wife and a kid and a life" was very jarring. It sort of made us all look around and say, "Shit, look where we are now".
For me, once you have a certain amount of life experiences and become a bit more self-aware, time never stops "flying by". It's a bit of a downer because sometimes, yeah, it's hard to live in the moment. And a year ago feels like yesterday.
Regardless of what your stance is, I think it always remains an interesting topic. Always leads to discussion. Whether it's about grander things like generational gaps and generations as a whole, or if it's more about personal experience and your own life as a whole.
I mean really even this post is a bit weird. I haven't been on MKO for months now. Haven't been on consistently for about two years.
I have a lot more I could say on the topic, but I don't want to bore anyone with a ridiculously long post. This post is already long enough.
Enjoyed reading people's responses, though.

At one point in time I was one of, if not the youngest user on this board. So, really, I'm not the best person to complain about the ravages of time - I'm still a young man.
However...lately I've been feeling kind of old, and to understand where I'm coming from, one must first understand that culturally I'm about a decade older than I am physically.
Some of you are probably saying "What the hell does that mean?" Well, my oldest sibling is currently 32, my sibling closest in age is almost 26. I grew up kinda poor, not too bad; upper lowerclass, lower middleclass something like that. However, where I grew up was really, in the middle of nowhere - there were no other kids to come and hang out, no neighbors at all, just us. So, I came to really rely on my siblings. I learned to like what they felt a kid of my age should like; I watched VHS tapes of shows they likes (or re-runs), I watched the movies they liked, I played NES games. From what my brothers offered me, and the fact that Disney was in the habit of running re-runs, I lived culturally out of sync - 87 Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters, Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Rescue Rangers, Punch-Out, Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and hand-me-down toys were my existence for the first real years of my childhood.
Once I went to school I adapted somewhat, but I never really grew to like what was the norm - I didn't like Spongebob, I didn't like pokeman, I didn't like Digimon, I didn't like Yu-Gi-Oh- I just didn't have any kid interests in common. But, as I got older and developed more adult tastes I guess you could say that I "caught up."
Now, closer to the point of the thread - When Harold Ramis died, it really saddened me. Ghostbusters was HUGE to me as a kid (even if it was over a decade after it came out) because my siblings made it that way for me. My closest friends, on the other hand, really didn't do anything more than shrug. At the same time, I'm seeing them all in a tizzy about Twitch plays Pokeman- I could care less.
Then came the day I spoke with my nephew- he's five. He told me that he and his older brother were going to watch "the old ninja turtles." When he put my sister back on the phone, I made a joking comment that I saw she'd "Found the old Ninja Turtles VHS tapes." She said no, and that the boys were watching a DVD of the "newer Ninja Turtles." The boys were watching the 03 series and it was "The Old Ninja turtles."
Now, just today I watched this. Now, I'm not that old, but my Great-Grandparents had a rotary phone and I remember it from when I was little - still, I don't blame the kids for not knowing that. However, their sheer lack of knowledge about basic land-line phones made me feel super...frustrated? I mean, for God's sake texting from it? I remember when my older brothers got their first cell phones, and I don't believe those could text. Now, remember, I grew up in an economically depressed small town that only ever had one cell carrier (still does), so our entire town was behind the times, but still.
Anyway, I'm just curious as to events that have made you guys feel out of date or old. Hell, hearing me complain about feeling old probably makes older users here feel old because I used to be "that dumbass kid" - still am.
But really, what makes you feel old and out of touch?

Remember, age is just a number. I know I was older when I see today's shows, books and what's neat this period. I can remember reading Goosebumps and watching SNICK every Saturday night (favorite show was All That, the kid's answer to Saturday Night Live).
I grew up with Nickelodeon, old school FPS games like Duke Nukem 3D. I somewhat remember the 80's cartoons (Like Razor said, I prefer the 2003 TMNT cartoon to the 80s because I started to read the old black and white comics and realized the 2003 cartoon was the closest you could get to those comics)
If I feel old, I'll talk to older and younger people. I'm 30 and a few years ago decided to talk to my grandparents on talking about the Great Depression and how they served in World War II. I found out my grandfather was stationed in the Philippines and wasn't on Guadalcanal the whole time. I'd watch with my parents the films they watched when they were younger.
A friend of mine from college hosted parties every Tuesday and I find the kids I knew growing up as little children are now 18 or older now. It seems the younger generations are into older music as well like one young teen and his girlfriend liked Iron Maiden.
I also talk to some college grads who have difficulty finding work and give them advice. It took me some time after college to find a full-time job with benefits. The pay is ok, but I'm happy to be employed and I paid off my student loans.
My sister is married with two children now and they are adorable to hang out with.
Try to also do things that make you happy. I was out of sync until I decided to make time to learn. I listen to a lot of 90's music but also am listening to older works like the Beatles and new music as well.
I used to believe that the 90's were the best but slowly realized people are different in regards to time.

This is hardly a recent development; disillusioned teens have been apathetic and disrespectful since before i was around. Who can really balme them? (I'm speaking more about the apathy here than the disrespect.)
