IGN NEWS
May 12, 2004 - It was a good time to be a Grand Theft Auto fan last night, as Rockstar Games officially unveiled the first screenshots from its upcoming sequel, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (which you can read all about here) to a stunned and completely receptive crowd. Totaling three in all, the small batch of screens were originally unveiled on the official San Andreas website, but not publically advertised until this morning when the the company sent out its mailer.
Luckily the mailer also marked a brand new update for the website too, as the first bits of information pertaining to the story were revealed. It read exactly like this: "Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas.. .a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption; where film stars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gang bangers.
Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets."
Unfortunately those quotes above are the only bits of info that we have so far; as Rockstar is obviously going to keep the meatier details under wraps until it later this year. At the very least, we finally know which era that game now takes place and that it has a conceptual style reminiscent of the popular 1990s gangsta films like Boyz in the Hood and Juice.

dude check it out, we finally get to ride BIKES! but it is a step down from motorcycles, i thought the next installment would do this. Bikes, Skateboard, razor scooter, hahaha

seriously tho, how much does it suck in vice city when your character gets "tired" and runs slow, if he carried a skateboard via tony hawk underground style, then you could skate.

The screenshots look nice and all, but any info on a possible cast yet? And I know I'm gonna get a lot of flack for this but, so far I'm not impressed. I know normally it's Foahchon's job to knock GTA, but since its announcement I haven't been hyped for it. I donno, maybe I'll change my mind when there is more info on the game, but for now I'm more interesrted in a lot of other titles appearing at E3.

naw i feel ya on that one. The ONLY game(s) im looking forward to are Deception and Arcade classics vol. II. I've just been looking for a screen shot for a little while now, and finally one is available. I heard that San Andreas wont even be at E3 this year because they want it mysterious, it doesnt need hype they are saying b/c no matter what it will sell.

That shot is not of Tommy Vercetti, it's one of those gang members on the bike, so I don't know if it is even safe to say you 'can' ride bikes.

One thing we do know for sure, it's present day!! (I base this on the dude 'saggin' his pants, again not Vercetti) That should mean a pretty kick ass soundtrack of new rap, rock and other songs!

I'm pritty sure the game takes place after GTA3 so it would be modern day, and also i heared that the main character is the guy from GTA3( thats a rumour not 100% sure on that) i would think you could ride bikes anything that gangs or the public use can be used by the main character, thats how it was with the previous games and i'm sure you can do that with this one. the screen shots look great but they always do, will have to wait to see any trailers to get a better idea.

Hell yeah those look fat! They need to bring back the driving cheat from gta3 that lets cars jump! That was one of the best things about the game.

Bikes? cool! Now, where are the skateboards. It would be sweet if you could pull off a few tricks on the bikes. It looks pretty damn cool.

Those shots DO love very cool, but until I see major advancements in graphics & gameplay, I'll reserve my own judgement. I completed Vice City BEFORE GTA3, and while playing the latter, I realized how right people were in describing the former as a "huge improvement."

San Andreas better have the same type of improvements over its predecessor, 'casue if not, I doubt I'll buy it when it eventually comes out on XBOX.

BTW, I too would like to read what Foachon has to say about the game tongue

WHat concerns me primarily is the music and sound. Early 90's...depending on the year, I may be screwed. The early 90's were, with some notable exceptions, not a very great time for rock. On the Hip Hop side of things, maybe we can hear Naughty By Nature's O.P.P. That would be nice.

I wonder if the commercials will be as funny as they were in Vice City. They damn well better be.

Umm early 90's (90-94) were actually some good years for metal. Pantera, Slayer, and Fear Factory were at their peaks. Metallica, Megadeath, and Ozzy had already staked their claim as the top dogs. And grunge started up. What was so bad about that?

Like I said, some notable exceptions. What I really meant to say is, on a scale of commercial success, I can't think of much during that time frame that would play often on the radio. On the whole, I seem to remember the early 90's (which I conisder (90-93) as being primirily pop-dominated. Maybe I was too young to rememeber back then, but there is the fact that I never really listened to the radio at the time.

We've already heard Megadeth and Ozzy in Vice City. Although it's possible that we may get something from at least those two again (I'd really like to hear No More Tears), I wouldn't bet on getting them both back, they'd want mroe variety. And for some reason, I can't see them using a Metallica song in GTA.

Although I've never been a huge Pantera fan, they're OK in my book. I'm really not sure which of their albums came out when, but I wouldn't mind hearing a track in the game.

As for Fear Factory, Demanufacture came out in what, early 1995? That's practically the mid-90's, and I'm sure San Andreas will take place before that. I doubt we'd be hearing anything from Soul Of A New Machine during the game.

I'd like to get something off of NIN's 'Broken', definitely. Listening to Happiness in Slavery while mowing down pedestrians...I'd also like something off the Pumpkins 'Siamese Dream'...

You've got a hell of a point when it comes to grunge. I can picture something off Nirvana's Nevermind on there (I just hope it's not Teen Spirit, getting a bit sick of that one...I'd prefer Come As You Are or Lithium). And as for Alice In Chains...**Drool**

And now that I'm looking through my CD collection, I'm seeing Rage Against The Machine, 1992. Killing In The Name.

**Is eating his own damn words with salt and pepper**

Anyway, I know that you're saying that the early 90's wasnt a bad time for rock. You're right. But I just seem to remember crap like Ace Of Base (oh GOD, they'll probably stick 'The Sign' on there somewhere), Celine Dion, and Billy Ray Cyrus dominating airwaves.

I just gor this hot, juicy E-mail from a friend.

however.

Looks just as cheap and ugly as the first two.
Two things Rockstar's games severely lack is class and polish, which keeps me from playing, nevermind enjoying, their games.

I realy didn't enjoy VC, since I didn't think it was much of an improvement over GTA3, except for a few tweaks. This more than likely will be just a little bit better, maybe. I say this becuase VC realy pushed the ps2's hardware i.e. the long load time and a few other things. Now if rockstar some how uses the hard drive it might be a different story. I guess we will haft to wait and see.

Too true.

Ohh and FF came out in 92, with their debut album Soul of a New Machine. Plus they had already made a name for themselves in backyard parties in San Fran and LA a year before the release of SOANM, so tongue Shadaloo
