I feel that a few KEY components from RE5 should remain intact.

-Quick Swapping Weapons: This should stay if only for the fact that switching weapons in a menu is TIME CONSUMING! I can't even enjoy RE4 because of that fact.

-Still Have An Out of Game Menu (ala-RE1-2-3-4): But only for items, not weapons. The weapons SHOULD, however, be assigned to directions on the D-Pad via this menu.

-Context Sensitive Actions: I'd love to punch an actual zombie in the face. I also don't think you should have to get your ankle bit just to stomp their fuckin' heads. Also, wouldn't it be fair to be able to dodge attacks from enemies and to counter attack Zombies?

-Free Aim: Even if the camera angles are fixed (ala KIller 7), this would work wonders for the RE series when placed back in it's roots. Shoot 'em in the head will be good advice this time around. Hopefully you can (attempt) moving while shooting. Just give us a few seemingly unbeatable odds in tight corridors every-so-often and we'll sure feel the pressure without the game being cheap.

Anything you feel they should include?

In addition, I'd love it if the zombies could be totally demolished like in Resident Evil 2.

I'd love to blow a zombie in halves on PURPOSE.

Bring an improved online versus mode packaged with the game at launch (not as DLC).

I'd actually like co-op to return, perhaps I'm just weird like that, but I like team oriented gameplay.

This. Games are not scary when someone is watching your back.

Also dial the camp way the fuck back. I wanted slam my head into the wall with how much they beat you over the head with that "your my partner" crap in RE5. I really feel they missed a chance to tell an dark and intriguing story about a pharmaceutical company going to remote African villages and forcing the people there into drug testing experiments.

I'm not some overly political hippie dude. But a story like that would have been awesome and fresh as hell.

I'd like to see what they could pull off with the next game having nothing to protect your self with it would be a change and you'd have to run away from Stuff instead. Because thats the way horror seems to be heading and capcom are far from original ... Sometimes they go out of their way to be unoriginal because they know it will sale. I like horror games where your helpless you can't just pull a rocket launcher out of your pocket. Maybe it wouldn't fit the world of RE but i just think RE could pull it off. Because i am sure every one can agree a monster coming at you and you have a gun ... OR a monster coming at you and you have nothing ... its pretty clear what one would be more scary. RE is going down hill so they also have to go back to their roots with zombies SLOW zombies to add. Also puzzles are a staple of the series thats being dumbed down for the newer gamers. Capcom need to be more bothered about their loyal fans than some idiot that goes "Who's Jill" T_T ... They need to please the loyals instead of the newbies! So i'll end this message with one big thing that would make me happy.

Resident evil outbreak file 3!!!!!!!!!

Make it happen Capcom!

This. I'm dead serious.

Resident Evil hasn't been scary since REmake and RE0. RE4 had a few disturbing parts (Regenerators, Garradors, Colmillos), but was not nearly as scary as REmake.

I have no faith in the series anymore, but if they actually made it a scary survival horror, not an action game, I may reconsider.

First and foremost, the music.

Nothing (and I repeat NOTHING, not even Lisa Trevor) was half as creepy as the soundtrack was in the old Resident Evil Games. Haunting, Foreboding, Sinister and Creepy. It set the tone for where you where, regardless if it was the middle of a ruined city or an isolated mansion. The soundtrack for the last two games just didn't cut it for me. I want the music to scare me just as much as the zombies do.

Now, another case in point. BRING IN RELEVANT CHARACTERS! Ashely? Sheva? Seriously?? Sheva may have had her uses but I honeslty thought she was cheaply introduced into the story just so Capcom had an excuse to use the Co-op feature (which also sucked). Resident Evil 4 would have been better with just Leon (and Ada's side missions), and Resident Evil 5 would have been better if Chris was on his own (or if they really wanted to use Co-Op, re-write the story to include Jill so they could both take down Wesker).

Over the shoulder camera's were perfect too. Or if they want to keep it the way they have it, dim, atmospheric, claustrophobic maps would be perfect. Keep everything psychological. Make the player feel like they're constantly being watched or are unsafe.

Limit the bullets and weapons. Nothing was more scarier than having 4 shotgun rounds and two spare beretta clips going up against Yawn in the first Resident Evil. Monster's are more of a challenge if the player has to reserve supplies to defeat them.

Puzzles need to be harder. What I liked about the old Resident Evil games where that the player couldn't just shoot their way through the game, they needed to rely on some logic and puzzle solving to progress. It has progressively gotten easier with the intellectual challenges as the games have gone on, which is a bit of a let down. It only added to the fear knowing you were stuck in a deadzone with no way out without working on a solution to a puzzle.

The RE Canon Died with RECVX. RE4 and RE5 are crap. No not on their own. They are great games on their own, But in the RE universe...Crap.

Being a fan since Resident Evil 1 on PS1, lets say I am about as seasoned as the RE fan gets. With that being said and my infinite love for the series. Capcom, seriously need to get their shit back on the road here.

Ever since Shinji Mikami was forced to change his first version(s) of RE4 by Capcom wanting an action-based audience, this series has honestly been a piece of shit. There will NEVER be anything like RE1, RE2 and RE3. Capcom claims they cannot go that direction anymore. I choose to call them ignorant. Classic games are coming back as strong as ever. And yet I find myself smacking my forehead swearing I could single-handedly make a better game than anything since the RE remake (which needs an HD revival on next-gen systems by the way).

Lets look at the facts, RE5 was garbage. they took Albert Wesker, A character well known for being the "puppet master" and manipulating and planning ahead beyond all comprehension or prediction, to a full frontal "muahaha im a bad guy" right in our faces. Shows the complete debacle that the creative writing has left the RE series in.

lets look at RE4 beta, scary atmosphere based on hallucination while still keeping umbrella as the main antagonist and mysterious backstory/shadow organization. Great atmosphere, a combination of classic gameplay with the OTS view we got for RE4, pure fucking GENIUS. The Hookman version, messing with the light. Even The Fog Version beta with the "cradle of the projenator virus". They must have been fucking high to let either of those slip away for hunting giant ogres and rescuing the presidents daughter. REALLY?! THE PRESIDENTS DAUGHTER!?..... wow

Lets look at some of the enemies here. Ricardo Irving is clearly an attempt at a new William Birkin, New El Gigantes supersede the others. Krauser was a Nicolai with a twist. Bitorez mendez was a laughable attempt at Mr.X. The list goes on. Capcoms creativity needs help...bad. You need to focus on depth and story telling, not action movies. HORROR.. do you hear me? Horror!!!

Not only did they let This Wesker destroy everything that made him awesome, they changed his entire mental approach to a tactician-oriented style of carrying out his objectives. He just wants to kill and rule like This...wow. They also never even attempted to explain where Steve or Sherry are located or what resulted. Easily 2 of the biggest plot devices they could ever have. This doesn't even compare to the fact that they killed of Excella Gione, EASILY the best shot they had at carrying on the role of "puppet master". She was perfect for the role, and just became another big boss battle. So far they have dropped every ball since Shinji's departure.

I wouldn't be writing this if I wasn't trying to save something I love deeply. so bare with me.

My suggestions:

-Go small scale world issues. Nobody cares about the president's daughter or that hollywood bullshit. Coverups and viral outbreaks are not getting old, look at left for dead, dead island, dead rising. People eat this shit up, so fucking use it!

-Explore untold plot devices without prematurely bringing them to an end on Capcom's lack of creativity. No story for Wesker? ok, but dont just throw a huge battle and Kill him in the middle of a volcano with missiles attached to his arms... see what I mean? Go for Sherry, Steve, Billy Coen, Barry Burton, Rebecca Chambers, Weskers past. Become part of the RE universe again!

-DONT just keep fucking jumping years into the future, They've jumped 10 years in 2 games, when the 5 best games happened withing 3 months of each other (re1,2,3,cvx)

-DONT blow HUNK up into some super action hero, he is literally perfect the way he is. I would actually pre-order 5 copies of a game based on his alpha and Bravo team during the RE2 outbreak and fighting off William Birkin in the sewers. PURE MAGIC!

-Explore William Birkin and throw him into more backstory. Easily one of the best characters created, and his monumental conclusion in RE2 stays with me to this day.

-Keep ANY protagonist from reaching a dominant position. Keep a struggling atmosphere and the thought of helplessness.

-DO NOT be afraid to keep the classic feel, even with an optional OTS(over the shoulder) view when aiming, or a button for both classic aiming and the new style. that's a HUGE step right there.

-Remember who it was that made RE a success in the first place. Selling out to us when we are the only reason RE survived, is a slap in the face.

-RE2... seriously, like RE Remake on gamecube, a remake of RE2 would provide enough hype to sell the game by itself. I can honestly say I would NEVER ask them for another game ever again. Give me my fully classic RE2 remake, not some fps shooter. They already have all the character models too, a few backgrounds, some voice over. DONE. I can't believe they haven't done this yet. its a no brainer! its like Square Enix not remaking FF7. I just cannot wrap my brain around it. in short. REMAKE RE2!!!! what more do we need!?

-they have plenty more plot left between RE Zero and RECVX to make a few more games. Use it!

-Keep the T-Virus, G-Virus and Projenitor Virus in play. But deffinately T and G!. we have only seen one Bow with G, WIlliam Birkin. I think id be upset if there was ever another. But we need classic RE vibe.

-Tyrant..Nemesis..Lickers.. use them.

In Closing. Capcom shouldn't be afraid to give us what we love. WE DONT WANT ACTION. We want to be scared. We want to jump out of our chairs as Nemesis chases us to a door or busts through a wall. SCARE US. Keep it in the good Canon. Isolated terror and Fear. ONE MORE bad game and I am calling it Quits with RECVX being the last game I pay attention to. I'm 100% fucking serious.

Check out the betas linked above. think what could have been. A mix of old and new.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Don't get me started guys. I can go on for days. hahaha

How Can We Make The Next RE Great?

MY ANSWER: Return the series to survival horror.
First and foremost NO MORE BABYSITTING! Ugh, had to say that. Watching Ashley was a pain in the ass. I mean Sherry wasn’t even that bad and she was just a little girl.

Next, Bring back the creepy files. To this day Keepers Diary still creeps me out. Or reading about a woman getting attacked in the mountains and people being warned to avoid the area. Then, Have the file say something like wanna try? For those who were brave enough to go up there. Or someone getting shot in the middle of the night for trying to leave the mansion. Or the early description of the Hunters tearing those pigs apart before they ate them. Or a guy basically killing himself because he doesn’t want to turn. Things like this I’ve kept with me more than I can say about anything in 5.

Everyone else has brought up good points. But to me the music has to be addressed again. I mean the first time I heard this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7OIfghQoiQ&feature;=related

Its pretty much made me scared about being alone at night sometimes... Being alone and having equally scary music is what gets under your skin.

Also I’d love more Berry Burton action! He kinda disappeared after part 1 outside of his cameo in 3. But I’d love to see him get back at Umbrella and Wesker for making him betray Chris an Jill.

I think Ammo supplies shouldn’t be so bountiful. In games like Metal Gear 4 when you can outright buy bullets. And with RE4 you can upgrade your ammo supply as well. It seems so easy now . Collect this collect this find the Merchant and buy ammo. Maybe it’s just me but I’d rather just find ammo on sight. And to add to this there was way to much health in RE1 (the original) I could beat the game and take out Tyrant and still have tons of healing. Meh...

Just a few more items of business... I’d love to see alternate scenarios kinda like in Part 2 . It kinda made the game fun playing the game twice or well 4 times and experiencing different things each time. Finally, some Mr. X or Nemesis action!

In closing Itchy, Tasty!

EDIT: And just for yucks have Jill or somebody KILL ALICE! Nuff said :p

With the exception of the Wesker/boulder situation, and maybe the HUNK thing, I couldn't disagree with you more on how to approach the RE series.

Fact is, Resident Evil, as a series was never very scary. It had a few jump moments, but those were more startling than anything else. The dog through the window, the first Hunter encounter, the T-80 chasing you all over Raccoon City in Scenario B in RE 2, and Nemesis bursting in every now and then. Sure, fighting Nemesis in a hallway praying to god he doesn't insta-kill you might be a little tense, but it's not what I'd call scary, and honestly, the RE series used every trick it had by the time you were playing Scenario B in RE2.

Almost every encounter since that initial T-80 one was reused in RE3 and RE:CV

Resident Evil has always been very bad at delivering legit scares or building much tension as a whole. Yes, there were a few choice encounters that made you go "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK", but I could probably count those on one hand.

What RE4 did was plant the seeds for games like Dead Space to follow through and take the next logical step forward. RE5 had some mis-steps, but it wasn't the co-op, that's for damn sure. It was an encounter problem. Because you have two players now, you have to find ways to limit what they can do, where they can go, and compensate for the additional fire power. I can really only think of the elevator hold out with Josh as being done well. You were swarmed, not much room to navigate, and you had to play intelligently. And those insect enemies, fuck those guys.

As for the size and scale of the conflict, let's not forget that Umbrella was a global "pharmaceutical" company who also dabbled in bio Terrorism on the side. It's founders and top men had installations every where in the world.

On to an RE2 remake, sure that would be nice, but Capcom apparently feels it's already retreaded that ground with DarkSide Chronicles on the Wii, as well as giving us a brand new "What If" in RE" Operation Raccoon City. I get the appeal of wanting to see RE2 redone completely, it's among my favorites in the series, but I feel that we've treaded that ground, set it on fire, and then salted the earth so nothing can grow there any more.

I firmly believe that going back strictly to the old formula is retarded. Capcom is better off experimenting with the series in different ways rather than just redoing the same thing over and over, that's what brought the series into a rut to begin with after RE3.

Also, and I want to emphasize this as much as possible: FUCK ZOMBIES. I hope that particular, slow moving, waste of programing is never brought into the series again. I can deal with the crimson heads because at least they got a reaction out of me the first time I ran into one. But the shambling, moaning, puking zombie needs to keep it's ugly ass out of this series from now on. You're not threatening when I can swerve past 5 of you in a crowded hallway without a scratch. Sorry. And yes, I realize that ORC has the shambling kind, but at least there's a metric ton of them. The BoWs were always more interesting to fight than the shambling masses of the infected. Hunters and Lickers and more experimental enemies are what we need.

And while I'm on my soapbox on things that need to stay out of RE games, 99% of the puzzle types in the old games should never return. No keycard puzzles, no gem stone puzzles, no emblem puzzles. The REmake had a few okay ones, and making the solvant to dry up Plant 42 by looking at the instructions on the wall was fun. If you want puzzles in the new RE games, use more of those and less of the former.

I could probably go on and on in regards to why I think going back to the old formula is a retarded idea, but I'll stop here.

I actually wouldn't mind an RE3:Nemesis remake with some new enemies, puzzles and weapons thrown in there. Jill Valentine is one of the best characters ever introduced to a video game, the woman is a fucking legend, and I'd personally leap on the chance to play through her encounters during the T-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City again. Imagine what they could do with newer graphics? It'd be insane.

And one more thing springs to mind, Lisa Trevor. She's easily been the most terrifying thing that's ever graced Resident Evil's presence. Everything about her story to her appearance was so haunting and memorable. The franchise needs more enemies like that, going up against monsters that actually have a foreboding, haunting existance rather than a mindless zombie is much scarier.

More on topic, I read someone say that Sheva wasn't a good addition, but I wasn't sure why, she was a great addition in my opinion and truly added to the diversity of the cast, I was glad I got to play as her, I wish you would have been able to play as Luis Sera too either in Mercenaries or in side missions like Ada Wong got in R,E.4.

I didn't start playing RE until the fourth installment, so perhaps that's why I'm not disappointed with direction of the series, but I did watch some of the earleir games and I think that they all brought something great to the table, I mean it's clear that the style is quite different, but I don't see the newer games as bad.

I mean RE4 had some creepy enemies, those Regenerators and Iron Maidens come to mind as well as IT and it was pretty dark and creepy with those cults and stuff.

I also don't understand how co-op makes it unscary, (I mean granted you have someone watching your back, but it's not like you're not overwhelmed by tons of enemeies and monsters still) if RE5 was truly scary, it would be rather it was a solo or multiplayer experience, it's like if you go to see a scary movie, the movie doesn't lose it's fear factor because you went to see it with a friend, unless it wasn't scary in the first place, I could be wrong though. RE5 just wasn't as scary as its predecessors. There were some decent scares though and I still think this is a very fun game with tons of replay value because of things like co-op,

Again, I stress, Lisa Trevor.

You know what made her creepy? The whole mythology behind her. A little girl who done nothing wrong but be the daughter of the Spencer Estate's designer. And yet both herself and her mother are taken captive, experimented on, driven insane just for development reasons. Even during those experiments the only thing she wanted was her mother, which only fueled her insanity. Years upon years of experimentation and lonliness creates this hostile, forboding creature that haunts not only the grounds of the estate but the player as well.

I'll never forget the first time meeting her in the old cabin, or hearing her moan from under the stairs in the main hall, or even finding the candle-lit little cave where she made herself a home. That in itself was ten times more terrifying than facing off against Yawn, or Plant 41, or even Neptune. What made Lisa (and the remake) scary was the fact there was so much atmosphere, intensity and thought put into her creation. Her whole story was terrifying and haunting, which made her far more memorable than the other monsters in the game. You can't tell me you played that game and didn't get freaked out when she finds her mothers skull. It's creepy shit.

And that's exactly what Resident Evil needs again. It needs to be creepy, sinister, well thought out and haunting. I don't want Flash Grenades, or Co-Op, or levels where I'm being chased on motorbikes by Majini's with Crossbows. I want to literally be too afraid to see what's ahead of me. I want puzzles, hard ones at that, where if I don't solve them fast enough, I'm dead. I want to constantly feel like I'm fighting to stay alive, that my player is in legitimate danger. Whilst I enjoyed 4 and 5, it's safe to say it's a huge deviation from what I know Resident Evil to be. Wesker went from being a calculating, formidable threat to being Neo from the Matrix with an unrelated british accent. Chris went from being the tough yet relatable guy, to the steroid junkie who can punch stone boulders 4 times his size to make them move. Franchises evolve, but Resident Evil's gone down the action route when it's always been established as being "Survival Horror". It's deviating way too far from it's roots.

I'd like to see a compromise if anything, where they can take the best aspects of past games and make it work in something new. Give us an outcast town in the middle of nowhere where the B.S.A.A have been called in to investigate reports of rumoured B.O.W activity and sightings. Make it creepy, dark, and atmospheric, where you don't just need to shoot everything in sight to get through a level. Have it like in the old game where you need to find maps to know where you're going. Have enemies literally jump out at you through windows, wardrobes, behind corners etc. Keep the player on their toes. Give them limited ammo, but the option of being able to dodge (similar to the way Jill could in Resident Evil 3) or counter attack (like the way you can in Resident Evil 5). Make it a horror game with some, and I stress SOME, action elements. That would be perfect for me.
