Unless they just make a thread themselves with the story written in it.

It's much easier to submit stuff that way... Hence why the fan submission forum should be changed in a way where that shit doesn't happen anymore.

Well what was stopping him from going home later that day and using his own computer to sign up? If such a small thing was enough to prevent him from joining then he obviously wasn't that committed to the idea. He'd probably have posted once or twice then forgotten all about the place instead of becoming a regular.

That is true, he was indeed on the fence and no, he'd have not become a regular but a casual poster/fan art submitter at best. One user regardless. Jaded-Raven's friend, BloodyBitch, had an alike story that ended shortly.

Basically, my friend didn't want me to get into more unnecessary trouble, so she decided to simply stay away. Her account was made with my computer and using one of my e-mails for activation, a mistake on my part as that was enough for the mods to believe I was making a clone account. I had absolutely no reason to make a clone account and I explained the situation to the mods, but it was ignored and I had to wait for the ban to eventually expire.

I made a mistake and had to take the consequences there of. I understand the reasoning, but I do kinda feel bad that it was enough to scare my friend away from this place. Due to her privacy, I won't tell what forum she joined instead, but she is happy with her choice. ^^

I think one of my ideas got buried in accidental deletion and recreation of my post.

User Profiles need to be more meaningful. I have looked at two since i joined (that weren't mine), and i'm not too fussed about it now. If we could have, say, more than 4 pics uploaded that would be a start (but a big use of space - i'm aware of the downside.)

Yes to the amount of posts & DPs being listed. Perhaps they could link into the rank system as well: i.e. X amount of posts = higher rank. Y amount of DPs = special rank.

I also support the random artwork made visible idea. It would be a good incentive to post artwork that would then not be shut away on a forum i dont really use.

Sot you get banned... but that Chimera dude makes a "female" clone account and "tried" to make this site believe some sort of Chameleon/Khamelon conspiracy and doesn't get into any kind of trouble. And I do believe it was a clone account. Not sure what qualified you for getting a ban and that guy just getting a slap. But obviously this isn't the time nor the place to actually discuss such a matter...

A specific question: If I were to update the post messaging system for the forum, what kind of formatting option would you guys like best: HTML, BBCode, Markdown, a rich editor, something else?

Personally I'd say HTML.

It's the easiest for me. I don't know how everyone else feels, though.

Whatever you feel is the best and you're most comfortable using, as long it will be user-friendly for the rest of us. Alot of people on here don't know basic HTML and is therefore unable to post pictures and links, so as long there will be simple buttons to activate these things for easier access and use - just like the "Add Original" quote system and the "Add Spoiler" buttons that appear on the bottom of when making a post.

I still think it would be a great inspiration to look at how the XenForo forums are, like the DHG Killer Instinct forum as those are, in my opinion, some of the most user friendly forums I have encountered.

In the end, that's what matters the most. Yes, design and such is important to attract users visually, but if the forum works like crap, then it will just scare people away. For the forum to be a sucess it has to be user-friendly.

Hi folks, I'll reply to a few responses from the last page and to two posts from this page, elaborating the potential utility of the dragon points amid it.
Mojo6 Wrote:
I'll be honest, I don't like the idea of moderators dolling out Dragon Points as much as I like your fellow community members "liking" or "up repping" you. A lot of point distribution systems in forums have strayed from moderators assigning ranks/points and it's for the better in my opinion.

If (hypothetically) the dragon points would now be handed out exclusively by regular users, what would happen to a.) shadow priests and b.) skull points? The moderators still have to browse through the messages as normally; I don't think that it takes really any extra effort to distribute dragon points while they distribute skull points – which have, should I mention, been very effective. And if the staff would only cast skull points, it would leave such a bad taste about them, wouldn't it? Yes it would: thus there should be a balance, yin and yang so to speak, in this matter as well.

Your preferred "karma" format makes sense though, seeing how it's in effect in Test Your Might as well – certainly it works in TYM, but there's no one-size-fits-all karma/reputation format out there for all online forums.

The Pros and Cons of Likes
  • No more plain smile or "QFT".
  • It's very easy. Just a click.
  • Posts are more interactive.
  • It boosts your confidence.
  • It passivates commenters – they actually become lazier.
  • A discussion may turn into a rather unnatural popularity contest, where the one with more "likes" is simply "right".
No forum can cater to everyone. Test Your Might has likes, Mortal Kombat Online has dragon points. As you (Mojo6) suggested to me in the TYM topic, visiting both sites can be one solution. I don't intend that a version of "likes" should not be integrated. What I'm predominantly saying is that MKO should develop its existing intellectual property, the dragon points.
RazorsEdge701 Wrote:
I wouldn't ditch Dragon Points altogether, there still needs to be a system for rewarding people who post fan art or fiction, even if it's just symbolic and has no actual practical purpose. A fake incentive is better than none at all. Trading DPs for something equivalent in purpose but better in practice like a user "likes" system would be fine with me, though.

Yes, it is by common sense that we focus in the dragon points somehow, because integrating a.) dragon points and b.) likes separately in the same forum, where the former have already been established as our means of approval, would get a little confusing. It has to be simple, in the sense that (renewed) DP's would be the way to go everywhere. Simplicity is the key.

Icebaby Wrote:
If there is to be a continuation of handing out Dragon Points, then they should go to something that is worth spending, otherwise I'd like to offer that the system to be scratched. Like I said, I can't even remember the last time I saw a dragon point be given out to anyone over the last three months, even more than that. Maybe if the ranking system is also something of a keep, I guess users could buy a rank? Each rank would offer something? I don't know what anyone would want as a gift on a fan site.

In the current state, the dragon point system doesn't certainly work well. It is true. Either have it function well or don't have it at all, half-assed is not the way. The dragon points should conform to the time, that's all it takes. Buying a rank (Assassin) has already been established here, so why not.

Yep... that much for "harmless rules". Registering twice on the same PC was prohibited obscurely after Jaded-Raven got mistakenly banned.

A rich editor in the HTML format would make a lot of sense to have here.
In the end, scrapping the dragon point system may not be the best choice. Yet, misusing and forgetting it *tsk* is obviously no better. People desire "likes" and the dragon/skull point karma system is a convenient, familiar idea so with modifying – it can serve according with the majority's liking.
