Microsoft To Buy Midway?

A press release this morning indicates that Bill Gates is interested in Midway.

It's no secret that Midway Games has been struggling. The company has reported 12 consecutive quarterly losses and has suffered a 75% drop in it's stock. Fortunately for Midway Viacom chairman, Sumner Redstone, likes Midway and has recently spent $16.5 million on 4.8 million shares. Interestingly enough, it looks like the world's most famous CEO, Bill Gates, is thinking of buying shares as well.

Investors watching the situation closely speculate that Midway is a prime candidate for a takeover. The company makes good games and is owner to some of the world's most famous franchises, such as Mortal Kombat and the Blitz sports series. Microsoft needs more games as they struggle to catch up to Sony who controls 67% of the video game market in the US.

Analyst believe that if Bill Gates enters into the fray it will spark a bidding war between the Viacom Chairman, Mr. Redstone and Gates. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft will be able to acquire another rather large publishing house.

same here.. now imagine what an mk game was made..... for only xbox! imagine the raw power to be used, ok people may diss the xbox but anyone who cant accept that its by far the most powerful of the consoles is seriously deluded.

It might not be a very good buy. There is talk that MS may buy Disney dispite the fact that Billy G. denies it.

That would suck goat balls the size of which has never been seen. Sony should then buy Rockstar and EA if this happens. Actually probably not cause I'd buy an XBox if it was my only way of playing Mortal Kombat.

i think it would be a wonderfull thing for MS to buy midway becauser they are the only ones whoo will not screw over all of there great franchises.

geesh, imagine if nintendo bought midway? good bye mk, gauntlet, and my other fav games.

sony, good gos that would suck, the first thing sony would do is shell out some cheap mk sequal, and wonder why no body bought the game, then get pissed millions of copies did not sell and shelf mk for several years and let the series die out.

MS is the only one withj the resources and talant to improve mk far beyound anything.

eh, all three companies are evil bastards. ms, nintendo, and sony. but atleast midway would build games from the ground up on the most powerful hardware and would be financially secure (the most important thing).

sony have tried to buy rockstar many times, you cant just go "im gonna buy that company" rockstar just havent wanted to be bought by sony. and ea are too much of a big company for sony to buy, sony dont put enough funding into the games area to successfully buy ea

I remeber the first time this kind of thread came around, and yeah everyone was being so nice to each other. I personnal wouldnt have aproblem with microsoft buying midway, so long as microsoft didnt interfer with midway to much and just let them get one with making great games.

Thats is sweet news! Thanks for posting. All of Midway games will be great on Xbox. With no other console to worry about other then Xbox, better games will be the result.

3do is bank rupted, and look at its games.

heroes fo might and magic, one of my fav series, is dead in the water, it was bought by ubisoft, and there is no mention on a new game, or anything, that whole series is now ruined.

4 hoursmen of the apocalypes, wa soposed to be kick ass super violant according to there site, cancled.

and so forth.

if 3do was bought by MS like i hoped, or by midway, or a good developer, and not the gay ea, i could still have amry men, heroes, and so forth.


now i hope midway does not go under, because it will sell its franchises to the highest bidder, and some jerk will buy mk and be like, "o, lets make something stupid, and when i dont sell, can the series, and make one version ps2 online, and the other version xbox no online, have it on gamecube, yet cut parts out"

if midway does anything, i say sell to MS

i would find great humor in the fact tht MS owns midway, and all the MS haters will be in a frenzy.

it would also be great because MS has enough money to keep boon well funded for decades to come, and with only one console to worry about, all of his efforst could go directly into the game, and knowing MS they will tell boon, do your best, take of the cuffs, and say, if u want it this way, u got it this way, if you dont want this in it, dont put it in it.

and he will not have to worry about another mk on snes incident ever again

so could it be possible that mk6 could be only on xbox?I mean think,they might make it for both right now but they can always just scrap the ps2 verison even half way through,but i think if ms buys midway then all the other mk's will be on xbox or xbox2.

didn't microsoft snach up Rare in the matter of days? i remember the story getting out about "microsoft seriously thinking of buying rare?" and i wake up the next day and boom, deal finalized.

Microsoft might not buy Midway overnight, but if Microsoft does decide they are, in fact, going to buy Midway, MK: D on anything other than Xbox can be canceled overnight.

didnt everyone say the same thing with rare that oh no its fake ,its not really going to happen.And up omg they got rare.And since midway isnt a 1st party like rare was only to nintendo.I say there is a good chance it could happen.And it could happen within a week.Meaning that yeah even if they work on the ps2 verison up to a month.And Mircosoft can easly scrap the ps2 verison even if there is only a month or so or even a few weeks.Cause there is no deal that they have to do it for sony.

Im going to wait untill Bill Gates says it himself he's going to buy Midway.90% of the news media is all crap they hate Bill Gates.They make a big deal everytime he goes to look into or buy a company.

Even if this is true it's only more good news in terms on MK:D. Because there would only be one system to delevope it for, and by cuting out out one of the two systems it means the developement time on MK:D was cut in half overnight just buy a buy out. But also as long as every thing stays on track and there aren't any snags then MK:D could be bumped up buy a month or so. So instead of comming out Fall 2004 we might get it in August or even earlier. Now this is just hypathetical and if Midway was bought out by MS.
