hey guys,
For those of you who don't know me. I've been a member of MKO since 2004, I've posted almost daily in the game forums and online play.
Until MKDC time, this was by far the best MK community, people shared opinions, even if those were negative toward MK/Midway/Other members and usually they did it with a good taste.
The criticism on these boards had great impact on the game. For example, Midway actually implemented a Wake Up game in MKA after people (including myself) posted videos and threads of the problems MKD had.
So what happend? To me is seems like the forum members, and some of the new mods, are passionately fan boys who have little interest or patience to read opinions about gameplay or negative opinions in general.
Every criticism is followed by a bunch of people calling you a troll, or simply showing disrespect in general.
Apparently a bizillion threads on Sonya's boobs are great. But if you say something negative you should only post it in the "rant thread"
Seriously? MKO has a special thread for people to complain?
So I decided to move to another MK site (I'm sure you know who) where people can talk freely and gameplay topics are actually welcomed.
This is not a "goodbye" thread. It's simply my great disappointment of what used to be a great community had turned into.

For the most part, I don't feel MKO has changed all that much. Yeah, the new crowd is having a hard time discerning between valid complaints and invalid complaints, and therefore have just started a witch hunt against complaints altogether, but overall, MKO is the same creature it always has been.
In many ways, the community has improved actually. We have flame wars now and then, but during the days of Deception, this place could turn into a complete madhouse. It seems like less people these days get banned, and I'm not convinced it's because the mods are more lenient or less present; the site is actually a lot more chilled out these days. People don't freak out as often as they use to.
There is a good deal of trolling going on, but it's usually not malicious. That isn't justification, but it's not a cause for revolution either. I will say that I'm tired of the Schitzo attitude among users regarding the marketing. You know, when users starting saying "NRS is a business; they don't owe us anything," and suddenly their head rotates 180 degrees and then say, "how dare you criticize the new videos! Do you know how hard NRS works? You're so ungrateful!"
Yeah, I'm getting pretty tired of that shit.

... You're leaving MKO for another site that you think will not show you the same thing that occurs here, I find this as a goodbye thread. No offense.
I think you're letting a lot of things get to you on this site, but if you feel the need to move to somewhere else, well then I guess good-bye is all I can really say to you. But since you're saying all this, I don't think you have the right to just be rude to other users, as what you did to Jaded-Raven, whether or not you're definitely leaving this site. Just because some users are rude, and you're complaining on here that there are rude users here, becoming one yourself just voids out your entire comment and just shows that you're not better than the other users who are rude. If you're this aggravated with how the community is, there's no need to show it onto other users. If you have an issue and want to change it, then change it. Don't sit here and think that nothing can be done and the only choice you have left is to leave.
I am disappointed with the way this site has been as well, but... I'm not going to let it get to me where I have to leave for another site... I always find those who are leaving for another site because the immaturity has grown to an extended length that is not tolerable, not making a better choice. What other MK site has mature users who aren't dicks and who aren't trolls and just have a good conversation? I don't really think a site exists that has nothing bad going on.

This other site you're referring to, are the users there generallyunited? Perhaps it's a nexus of everyone's thoughts? What was your initial feeling toward it?

I've read some things like "if you cant rip your opponents head then it's not a fighting game" only a fucking ignorant could write that, brilliant proof of someone who has not a freakin fucking idea of what hes talking about, and MKO has been clogged with "people" like that.

whoa, wait what? Who said that?
I've heard worse though. A friend of mine asked me if I liked CoD, and I said no I don't like shooters, I prefer fighters. He says "Call of Duty IS a fighter!"
smh
Some things:
Mods are too lenient. During the time as a mod after the Deception-period (if I recall it correctly) there were regular bannings. Aside the shadowbans I have always enforced the idea that no ban should be temporary. I worked. There were alot of idiots, currently I couldn't, and wouldn't do this.
Despite this, mods are too lenient. Instead of flaming we have quasi-intellectuals meandering around with subversive sentences which basically have little to no merit. People -including me- forgot that all criticism is only sound when you offer an alternative. Even if it is wrong, you still had something in your pack of cards.
The general quality of users is downgraded, while manners have improved. Weird, sometimes I miss people like Libra and Tgrant (scarcely he appears),. XiaoDhun before MKO ate away his mind and/or placed too much importance on the false idea of the all-powerful MK mythology.
But hey, we don't have new-gen MKFLegends arounds. The guy was golden until he decided he knew about stuff he had nothing to fathom about.

> That sucks, it's quite unfortunate that you don't post anymore. I've been here for about half a year and it reminds me of how some Myspace forums used to be, a lot of flaming and other nonsense kinda sad, but it usually happens on forums, people get out of control when the anonymity of the internet enters the mix.

Well, we (the mods) wouldn't be where we are if we didn't love MK. Now, you know as well as I do that I berated the team for MKvDC and all that came with it, and that there have been more than a few things that this new game has had which I have condemned (see: Kratos). Forum members? Absolutely. I agree with you there and it has made wading through the MK(2011) board something of a chore for me in recent weeks.
The Rant Thread was made to curb some of the constant bitching that has taken place. Clearly it hasn't been as effective as I would have liked, but it still serves its purpose. I disagree with people who tell dissenting opinions to go rot in the Rant Thread, however, unless it's obvious that they will contribute nothing to the discussion.
As far as gameplay is concerned, again, you know that's my utmost focus when looking ahead towards the new title. I can't say the same for a lot of other people here, but you have to understand that not everyone (in fact, very few people) cares about dissecting the game as much as you or I. If that drives you to leave here and frequent somewhere else, that's your right, and more power to you. I'll at least miss talking to you.

To give a little history about the rant thread, it originated when MK vs. DCU was first announced with that image of Sub-Zero and Batman staring each other down. Within hours the forums were flooded with threads about essentially the same topic. It really came off like everybody decided to make their own personal thread about how offended they were.
The rant thread was stickied to pretty much capture all of that to avoid the spam. It's essentially a specialized version of the Drive By. It wasn't supposed to be long term but apparently ended up catching on because I guess people like having a thread dedicated to bitching but it is by no means the only place to offer criticism.

I think a lot of ppl lost interest in the new MK games... particularly gameplay... but they still come 'round for other reasons.
The new members usually are a bit more fan-boyish. So we got a flow of older members out of the MK game related boards into General, and new guys posting in the game ones. thats at least my impression

I think if you have an interest that isn't being catered to, you need to make the best effort you can to change that. For the most part, moderating staff should only be here to try to keep everyone within the boundaries of the common good. The forum is what you and all your fellows make of it.
I think if you look, you will find user opinions run the gamut from blindingly positive to dreadfully negative. Nobody should be telling you to relegate a valid opinion to the "rant" thread, and you shouldn't be listening to them if they do. Accept that opinions will differ and move on.
I've been around the place since '99, to varying degrees.
For me, MKO has always been an accessible, centralized hub for MK fans of all types to congregate and share their interest in the series, good or bad. I think in it's long existence the site has turned into a valuable source for all MK fans to look toward. I hope it can be a functioning and diverse place for everyone, but that takes everyone making an effort to accept and effect the forum around them. This kind of bat and ball sulking doesn't help anyone.

Frankly, this sounds like complaining just to be complaining to me. Considering I've been here for the entire time this site had the impact you're speaking, I feel inclined to speak on it's behalf. First and foremost, I think it's silly to expect the most popular MK site on the internet not to be "casual", which I know is what all you people like to refer to it as. The separation of one group of fans from another is what caused that mess a few years back in the first place; it's a false sense of entitlement and creates a hostile atmosphere. It's basically walking into a club or bar and say, "Hey, we're better than you. You people don't even deserve to be in here" and expecting them not to get mad. As I said, we are a popular website and it isn't our job to cater to one group. What would you have me do? Ban everyone that's "a scrub", as so many enlightened and friendly high-level players say? Be realistic and learn to co-exist.
These forums were visited by the MK team because this is a popular website and has been all the years in question. So the solution is to leave and go some place to discuss the game in a place the right people may not even find it? That doesn't exactly sound like having the quality of the game in mind to me. The fact you claim you feel unwelcome to discuss the gameplay openly and with criticism is ridiculous; if you can point out to me any time a moderator or staff member told you to stop talking negatively about Mortal Kombat I would be thoroughly shocked. As far as having a "rant thread", it's not there to contain all negative comments, simply "passerby" ones. As in, how the Drive By thread acts in this forum. If you watched a recent video for example and found something you wanted to say, you could post there. But if your complaint was valid enough to make a thread about it then you certainly are free to.
It's a bit disheartening, because I have tried to improve the site in various ways over these first few months as webmaster. Sometimes the gameplay crew is so negative about everything it gets to the point of me not even caring anymore. I'd love to have certain members of the site back here, but not at the expense of you guys demeaning everyone else who isn't into what you are into.
Short version: You're making things up about not being allowed to discuss the gameplay in perfect frankness. If you are not, then PM me examples of you or anyone else being told not to have thoughtful discussions about the gameplay and I will deal with those people appropriately. It sounds to me like you're upset the majority of people are "casual", but please be realistic and don't put the blame on the site's administration for that. Just because we welcome people who want to discussion character design (Sonya's boobs) or story doesn't mean we are trying to tell gameplay discussion to get lost. Co-exist.

I dont know if they are too lenient. I once got banned for posting about an MK based porno once. I didnt even link it but I told them where they could find it.

Crow, what your doing here is appreciated by all including myself and I think you're aware of that..
When a thread, "a bitching thread", as it is now called on MKO is ended by a mod with this line:
"If you care to continue bitching about marketing, take it to the rant thread. Seriously. It's annoying as it is."
Then I don't think there is an open respectful discussion.
I may be wrong, but I've yet to see a "hardcore" MK gamer coming into a "casual" thread and saying:
"Stop with your casual talk you scrub, go and cheer MK in the - MK is awesome thread"
I can speak for myself saying I never done that and I don't think any other "pro" player did it. We don't care that there are 200 threads about Rain, we care if negative threads about MK are simply labeled as "bitching". And the mods don't think there's anything wrong with it.
And I still think MKO failed miserably with keeping any of the pro players.
First of all there hans't been a single move by MKO to encourage some sort gameplay type talk. And I mean - a place to post videos. Character specific forums... a dedicated place for character guides and other stuff.
In fact I remember it took like two months to stick a gameplay thread.
Now the PS and XBOX forums were merged, was it really that necessary?
MKO has done nothing to keep the pro players. Instead it just focused on one or two idiot members who took it too seriously and labeled pro players as "crazy"

I agree with this man, which is why I rarely post in the MK sections.
I've been a member just as long as you have, although after Deception I more or less just left the place. Mortal Kombat's lack of... vision, in those days, left me disillusioned with the franchise. That and the site seemed to just not work for me for some reason.
I came back around the time MKvsDC was announced before disappearing again. Surprisingly, I found that the userbase seemed more focused than previously on aspects that were important, such as a game that didn't suck. Unfortunately, most of the casual fans complained more about how there wasn't enough gore and that Superman was on the roster. I wasn't sticking around for more of that nonsense and left again.
This time around, it actually seems like MKvsDC was the kick in the ass the fanbase needed to finally get most people on our side. Without gooey bits flying around to blind them, they finally realized that MK just wasn't that great of a series afterall and needed some serious retooling to keep up with other games in the genre. I'd say the community is a massive improvement compared to 2004, because lots more users feel that the gameplay being good is most important, and it's apparently not falling on deaf ears if what NRS says is true.
Sure, we still have casuals and mongoloids complaining about stuff that really isn't even that important, but overall the community's probably better than it has ever been as far as focusing on gameplay goes.
