Just curious about who you guys think are the most underrated actors and filmmakers, as well as most overrated ones.

Mine are;

Overrated:
-Actors-
Jack Nicholson. Just plays himself in every movie. Even when he played the Joker, he wasn't playing the Joker. Seemed like he only played Jack Nicholson in a Joker costume. And no I'm not a Nolan fanboy, this isn't a comparison to Ledger's Joker, it's just an observation about Nicholson's Joker. Which actually brings me to...

-Filmmakers-
Christopher Nolan. Only really good thing he's ever done IMO is the Dark Knight trilogy.

Can't really think of any underrated ones at the moment. Unless you count Guillermo del Toro as underrated. Hard to say. Kind of feels like he should be bigger than he is. I personally think he deserves to be bigger and more widely known, more than most of the filmmakers that all of the critics and film snobs put on a pedestal.

OVERRATED

Sarah Jessica Parker - She can't really act, and she looks like a horse. BEST WORK: Hocus Pocus

Halle Berry - She's a good actress, but she's not as good as people make her out to be. BEST WORK: Losing Isaiah

Robert Pattinson - He acts the same way in just about every movie he's in. It's so depressing. BEST WORK: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Denzel Washington - Much like Pattinson, he acts the same way in every movie he's in. I cannot stand to see him act; it's horrible. BEST WORK: She Got Game

Beyoncé Knowles - She needs some acting classes before she steps back into the ring. Every character she protrays just ends up being a slightly less sassy version of herself. BEST WORK: Dreamgirls

UNDERRATED

Franky G - One of my favorite actors, he's very good at portraying different types of people, and does not get enough credit where he's due. I still think he would make a great Kratos. BEST WORK: Manito, Insiders

Meagan Good - Even though she could always be better, what she has done was pretty damn impressive. I'll be checking out the TV show Deception soon to see how she does. BEST WORK: Saw V

Dakota Fanning: This now woman should have won an Oscar years ago. Surely she is one of the greatest actresses I have ever seen. BEST WORK: I Am Sam

Jackie Chan - Despite his well deserved notoriety as an action film star, he can still bring on an awe inspiring performance, though it's usually overlooked. BEST WORK: The Karate Kid, Legend of the Drunken Master

Jada Pinkett-Smith - Another amazing actress who often doesn't receive due credit. I very much enjoy her work and wish she'd start back up with more films. BEST WORK: Set It Off

Kimberly Elise - Another one of my favorite actresses, she can easy bring a viewer to tears with a performance. I am very much surprised she has yet to win an Academy Award. She deserves a few. BEST WORK: For Colored Girls, Diary of A Mad Black Woman

That's all I can think of right now.

Overrated:

Tom Cruise- Always the same character in every movie.

Will Ferrell - Always the same character in every movie.

Angelina Jolie - Always the same character in every movie, reason why 'm skeptical of her playing my favorite villain, Maleficent.

As much as I hate to say it

Sylvester Stallone - I loved you during Rocky, but man, you're just not the same anymore.

Michael Bay - Explosions in every other scene doesn't make your movies better... That, and I just never appreciated your work.

Underrated:

Everyone that starred in movies from 1930s-1950's... You don't hear people talking about those kinds of movies these days. And that was some phenomenal acting back then too.

Uwe Boll - As much as we hate his movie adaptations from video games, you have to admire that the man just wants to be a great director. And that's always getting underlooked. That and he's a boxer that challenged other directors to put up or shut up. Gotta like that! wink

I think I may have to disagree on this one.

Sure, her roles in action films may be very similar, but her more dramatic roles are very impressive, like in Changling and Beowulf. I am actually very much looking forward to seeing how she portrays Maleficent.

I might get shit for this, but I also think Stanley Kubrick is pretty overrated. Full Metal Jacket is the only film of his that I've really liked (out of the ones I've seen). The Shining was decent, but nothing too special. Obviously not a fan of Nicholson either, and even Stephen King disliked Nicholson's performance in the movie. Eyes Wide Shut is pretty much a porno with a storyline.

People don't talk about those movies because they're 60-80 years old. That's basically common sense. Sure, they had good acting, and yea, they were good movies, but not many people these days have seen any of them because there are many movies today that are every bit as good as the oldies. Also, people want the instant gratification of what the current stuff offers. They aren't going to go out of their way to watch black and white movies.

Anyway, as far as overrated/underrated goes, Steve Carell is the most overrated actor ever in my book. He isn't funny, is basically typecast as either an awkward guy or a total dickhead, and can't act as anything else. I think Russell Brand is kind of underrated, only because he isn't in a lot of movies anymore and he really should be. If you've ever seen Get Him To The Greek, you know what I mean. He's one of the funniest actors to come along in quite a while.

Absolutely 100% agree, I loved FMJ but everything else of his is very overrated.

In my not at all humble opinion, underrated begins and ends with Lloyd Kaufman and the good people of Troma Studios.

*pulls out trump card* A Clockwork Orange. If you don't appreciate this movie you must be tripping.

'nuff said.

Now, on the subject of Angie:

Her best acting comes from the roles where she ISN'T an action hero. I cite 'Girl, Interrupted', 'Gia', 'Changeling'. I still love Tomb Raider, though.

my presonal list - Overrated 'so-called comedy' actors:

Ben Stiller - not funny or convincing as "socially-awkward guy".
Peter Kay - not funny, in fact sad and disturbing.
Russel Brand - his autobiography had NO punctuation. Looks a bit like Amy Winehouse sans lipstick.
Lee Evans - bouncy yet annoying, not in an infectious way like Michael Macintyre.

others:

George motherf***ing Clooney - not even sexy. For more info watch American Dad ep 'Tears of a Clooney'. I'm with Francine the entire way.
Keira Knightly - a wooden doll has more talent than she does.

Underrated:

Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins - Ginger Snaps. Need I say more. Also loved Katherine in Supernatural.

umm... i'll come up with more later. Good thread.

To be fair to Kristen Stewart, look at the role she's best known for. No actress, short of a ridiculous trooper like Mila Kunis or Keri Kenny would throw more than 30% at Twilight.

In reply to above: Christopher Nolan is not overrated. I respectfully disagree. He has only directed 10 films (according to imdb). 5 of which were:
-Batman Begins
-Dark Knight
-Dark Knight Rises
-Inception
-Insomnia

Placing 50% of his movies at "oh my fucking god" level, is far from overrated. It also takes Directors a while to gain the rep to take on bigger projects. No way he is overrated.
------------------------------

Overrated:
-Taylor Lautner: Good looks, from general opinion. The only reason he is where he is. TERRIBLE acting although I will attribute some of that to the terrible writing, alongside him.

-Nicolas Cage: Firstly. I love Cage. He is the man. I enjoy every movie he is in. But let's admit it. He cannot act. My favorite movie featuring him is both "Kick-Ass" and "Knowing". He played very different in Kickass. A disconnected man blinded by ambition, in a weird way. Funny but believable. Knowing, just because of the scale. it wasn't about Cage and who he was. If so, in a minimal way.

Underrated:
-Michael Fassbender: He isn't very unknown. But I haven't heard much of his great acting. I feel he was the best acting role in "Prometheus", by far. "Inglorious Basterds" helmed a great role. This guy can REALLY deliver dialogue. And he was responsible for me warming up to Magneto, in X-Men: First class. Rumor has it, this guy might be playing Liquid Snake, in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Movie. I can only hope. Perfect fit.

Yeah, for those who put down Kristen Stewart, you really gotta see her in more things. In Walter Salles' On the Road she was beyond fantastic. She had awards buzz for that performance.

I have seen her in more things, and I don't really like her acting.

The only person in any of those Twilight films that I actually consider a good actor is Dakota Fanning, who is fucking sick with talent.

My most overrated actor has got to be...
John Cena. He's got so much fame from being a written-out superman. At least Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) plays a wide array of different genres in his movies. John Cena played in Nickelodeon movies for God's sake. No more needed.

Underrated;
Charlie Chaplin.
Most people wonder why a person like me enjoys silent films. Charlie was awesome.Just because he's in old movies doesn't mean anything.

@Casselman. the Knowing was a brilliant and superb movie with everything right except that really stupid ending.

@Riyakou. It's weird how Dakota Fanning used to be be the 'little girl in everything' and now she's doing the f***ed up teenager roles.

@LegoSlayer. I loved the Rock in Southland tales where he's amnesiac and skittish like a mouse. It's the contrast of big beefy guy doing those things that was truly funny.

That ending was exactly what I was hoping for. A slight nod to religious origin, while still concluding itself, properly. Not unexpected, but I enjoyed it.
