the reason why some ppl write 1337 instead of leet or alite is that many ppl like to use nym,bers isntead of letters, 1 = l, 3= e, 7 = t and so on, and pwned was jsut a typo

Seriously though, the general populace seem to be devolving the English language into "leet speak" garbage that they use offline nowadays...and then wonder why their grades in English suffer so.

Using abbreviations is ok by me, I'm guilty of that, just as long as I never say "lol" out in public offline, I won't need to be shot.

In the chatroom of course, I will use a few words of "leet speak" in a joking manner with a few people I know.
It's a kind of running gag now. "Hai" "OMFG" "U R teh lier!!11!" "Noe UR!"

But I never, ever, use it in everyday conversation as if it were proper form and replacement for standard English...some people do though, and that's what scares me.
