Remakes, how I hate them.

What?! Is your whole point that it's okay because it's based off of a 60s story?!
I already knew the genesis of the movie anyway.
Total Recall is one of my most favorite films ever.
However, I'm sure it's going to be butchered like most other remakes.
Jessica Biel as Melina? Colin Farell as Quaid?

Expect it all to begin... again... in February 2012.

"The Thing" wasn't so much a remake as it was a re-adaptation. The original film didn't follow the novella much at all. Carpenter's version was far closer to the original story "Who Goes There?".

There will be a new The Thing (2011) coming, but it's not a remake really because it follows the Norwegians who went to the facility. All of them die there and Carpenter's The Thing (1982) follows from there.

That's why even if The Thing's prequel turned out to be one of the worst movies of all time, at least it wasn't a remake. John Carpenter's The Thing will not be replaced in the series' canon by something likely to be inferior. Though being a prequel doesn't stop a movie/game/comic from pointlessly retconning anything, it's still better than a remake.

Another thing that annoys me about remakes is the way people blindly accept them overriding the original movies/franchises. Many act as if there's some unwritten rule that when movies are remade, you must never ever again make a sequel to the originals. Because of the ANOES remake, some will act as if Robert Englund has either died or permanently lost interest in playing Freddy again. Or that he lost the right to play Freddy.
It's this comment I've read about including the Jason from the F13 remake in MK9 as DLC (in the DLC + Jason thread) just because they've included Jackie instead of Freddy (that's what I'll call the "Freddy" we've got). Although like I said, there's not that much difference between the reboot's live Jason and the original franchise's, so I'd be fine with him as DLC (but would prefer the undead version). Including the "new" Jason just on the account of Jackie being in isn't a valid reason however.
I am not losing hope of a new ANOES movie, or a sequel to Freddy vs Jason, featuring Robert Englund as Freddy (or shall I say, Freddy instead of Jackie), a follow up to Jason X, and a worthy sequel to Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. To hell with the remakes.

The Texas Chainsaw remakes were great and the new Friday the 13th wasn't actually that bad. I love Rob Zombie's two Halloween movies. I just love Michael Myers and the whole Halloween mythos. Being born on Halloween and all, you could probably guess that the Halloween movies are some of my favorites. People always complain about the way Rob Zombie treated the story. All I can say is those people obviously haven't seen the H20 or Resurrection. They were absolutely terrible.
However, I hated the ANOES remake. I've only seen it once though. It may grow on me like the Friday the 13th remake did. But I really don't see the problem with remakes. If you don't like them, don't watch them. Simple as that. If you like the originals so much, just stick with them and pretend the remakes never came out. Oh and I heard that Robert Englund wasn't even asked to be a part of the new one. He said he would love to play Freddy again. And I'm sure he will. P.s. Jason X was horrible. I will admit some of the death scenes were pretty awesome. But overall it was shit .

I've seen H20 and Resurrection. I liked them. Your opinion about them and Jason X being bad is just that, your opinion.
About pretending the remakes were never made, it's kind of hard when they end up replacing the originals. As much as I loved the old ANOES movies, I don't want to be stuck watching them forever, I want new movies featuring Robert Englund as Freddy. As long as he can still play the character and as long as he wants to, I see no good reason not to cast him back in the role. But thanks to that remake, and the tendency of both Hollywood and the general public to act as if remakes can't be ignored in favor of the originals, it may not happen.

War of the Worlds 2005 is my favorite movie of all time. I thought it was mountains better than the original.
I also loved the new Nightmare on Elm Street. Not as much as the original... but that's a milestone to top.
The new Jason also got me hot and bothered, I never liked the original.
I also liked The 2005 Amityville Horror but only because of Ryan Reynolds.
Ocean's Eleven was better than the original.
The Ring was also better than Ringu, but the original had some fantastic scenes. Those two are fairly close.
That's all I got off the top of my head.

Guillermo Del Toro is re-imagining (those of you that have seen any of his films would understand the use of the word, as opposed to 'remaking'):
Beauty & The Beast.
Emma Watson is pinned for the role of Belle.

You don't remake Beauty and the Beast. Now they've gone to far.

While I don't hate all remakes/reimaginings (sometimes they're better, sometimes they're worse), what I'm worried about is Hollywood getting it in their heads that if a series/film didn't do too well they could just wipe the slate clean and start over, giving us an endless cycle of freaking remakes (freaking Spider-man remake....DO WE REALLY NEED THIS?!). On a similar note, I don't really mind re-releasing an updated version of a movie, or adaptations from video games/comics/books (depends sometimes, though).
I like the qaulity films but to say remakes are bad, You are only mostly right you must not have seen the coen brothers amazing True Grit remake which is one of the best films ever made. Total Recall should be a better film colin farrell is a great actor (although a few bad choices) and I'm confident it will be better than total recall with arnold. Spider-Man however is a recent remake that is just stupid yet the ones who dont truly care about film will flock to the theatre to see anyway.

Movies: Il keep my mouth shut.
The only reason I came into this thread.
Why I wont ever argue with a game remake...If done correctly
Now if only RE2 was remade like this...
