Sequel to THQ's million-selling franchise confirmed; Multiplatform release on PS3, Xbox 360 a reality. First screens and info inside!
by Jeremy Dunham

March 30, 2006 - It's WrestleMania 22 in Chicago, Illinois this weekend and to help celebrate the occasion, the folks from Yuke's, THQ, and WWE are going to make a special announcement tomorrow evening. To be revealed at the annual Superstar Challenge prior to this weekend's festivities (which includes the WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony and WrestleMania itself), the announcement will officially confirm the next iteration of the WWE videogame family, WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007.

In addition to confirmation that the game is coming to stores later this year, the most interesting piece of information actually relates to the systems on which the game is coming out -- which embrace PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions besides the expected PS2 and PSP SKUs.

This move not only marks the first time in the franchise's history that a SmackDown title will appear on two system generations at once, but also, the first time that the game will be headed to a platform other than one created by Sony.

"We are pleased to bring our highly successful WWE SmackDown vs. RAW franchise to next generation consoles," said Kelly Flock, executive vice president, THQ worldwide publishing. "As the publisher of the number one wrestling videogame brand in the world, we are eager to take this franchise to new heights by offering the game to current-generation, next-generation and handheld gamers."

"We are excited about the next groundbreaking release in the multimillion dollar SmackDown vs. RAW franchise," said Nelo Lucich, vice president of interactive, JAKKS Pacific. "WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007 combines ambitious, exciting features, such as the interactive fighting area within the crowd and a brand new analog control grappling system, which enhance the WWE videogame experience. We are confident this debut will offer a compelling sports entertainment experience for the next generation of gamers."

Finally the best wrestling game comes to XBox. You guys should be happy.

Can't wait to play this, I still play 06 all the time. Awesome series of games, but the roster has gotten pretty fucking weak in the last few. The CAWs' will never get old though.

I'm wondering will they have more for the PS3 version due to the amount of extra space that blu-ray can use or will it be the same as PS2/360.. all in all it's looking prity good.. and i agree with crow i hope they have a full roster this time well the Ps3 version sure would have the space.

great!! but in 06 i got bored pretty quick. once you have done everything, it just lost intrest. Some things they need for this game.

1. Better AI
the AI wasn't great in 06, they were WAY to predictable. I could reverse every move they put me in because after the grapple animation they attack straight after it, so its easy for me to know when to press the reverse button. All they need is to make opponents mix up the timings of their attacks and let them have a decent reverse system.

2. backstage areas
WWE wrestling's backstage areas went downhill from the first SvR. Yukes hit the nail right on the head with HCTP, the interactive areas were great in that. I could go where ever i wanted (well, to where ever the game aloud me to go).

3. full roster
i wont mind if they dont put the WHOLE roster in but it is needing a large amount of wrestlers in the game, but with the PS3 i think they should have no problem.

well these are the things i can think of off the top of my head.

I'm sure the online play will be considerably better on the 360, and PS3 versions. Oh and as for the rosters. There is always the possability of roster updates now with the 360, and PS3 if THQ actually decides to support it. I think the features going into the next gen wrestling games will be whats sets itelf apart from previous gen versions. Just because of the hardware limitations of the PS2.

Can't wait! Although, tough decision to be made, get it for PS2, or get it for 360? Cause I don't want the PS3.

Yah I agree I've played most of the wrestling games you can get for x-box and ps2 and honestly they are all pretty bad except for Smackdown vs RAW, or the older Smackdown series games that came before it.

BTW that pick of Cena is crazy...you can see the sweat on his face. I'm looking forward to playing the new SvsR game when it's released.

Wtf, that vid is very dissapointing if you ask me.
The graphics look awesome, okay. But it still has the same moves and shit like on the PS2.. Those fake punches, and old odd moves. They really should improve that in the first place, imo.
Xbox 360 is gonna get hd-dvd soon so um the difference is the blue ray has 50 gb and hd-dvd has 45 so not big difference

Does part of your thoughts live in my mind or something? The game looks awesome so far though. Imagine, Carlito's hair bobbing up and down in HD. EDIT:First Video

God damn it. Still the same horribly animated moves. Some of these animations are like 5 years old. They should have improved ALL animations by now. Especially now that it's hitting next gen consoles. When Angle clotheslines Cena over the barricade, that's how good ALL move animations should be, not just the "new" one's.

Also, when Angle does that moonsault, he goes through the usual animation then freezes once it's finished, floating the rest of the way down completely stiff and unrealistic. Just like with all the other Smackdown games. WWF No Mercy didn't suffer from this, so why does SvR07, when it's two generations ahead and designed with better technology? Similar thing when the table broke - Angle didn't land on Cena, he landed beside Cena and slipped away while Cena went crashing through the table himself, just like with all the other games. It looks lame, and makes me not want to use the tables at all because i've done that million times in all the other games. What's the point in having incredible graphics to make the game look lifelike if they turn around include shoddy, fake looking move animation that makes the characters look like puppets on strings?

Bleh. I'm not keen on this at all. It definitely looks very impressive graphically, but it's all hype and barely any substance. They recycle the same moves every year, and when I buy the game I feel like i've already played it a year ago. I got bored with SvR06 in about 2 days because wrestling matches in it was like wrestling matches in the previous game, and I had already played that game to death.

Wrestle Kingdom on the X360 looks awesome though. I guess i'll have to import that from Japan if I want a next gen wrestling game. Until then, i'll just keep playing WWF No Mercy. Funnily enough, i've actually played No Mercy more than SvR06, and I bought them at the same time. Go figure.

I don't know the difference between a Smackdown or RAW diva (haven't watched in awhile, the whole thing's a soap opera), but Keibler's got those legs to kill for. smile

Yep, they improve the game alot graphically every year, but its still all the same gameplay with a few added things in each game. This is actually one of the reasons I prefer the DOR over SVR, things don't get so old so quick, you can do new things all the time.

Example : If some jumps off the top turnbuckle with say a double axe handle, you can run at them and give them a wicked mid-air spear and if done right, it will connect the way it should, but either way it will inflict alot of damage, and keep the opponent down.

In the smackdown series however, you try this and they will sorta look like they trip, then fall to the ground and get up half a second later.

MS have confirmed that HD-DVD is for Movies NOT games.. so no it wont be on par with blu-ray.
