The Discover New Music Thread
The Discover New Music Thread
There's a TL,DR spot you can start at towards the end if you're really in THAT much of a hurry.
So, first off, hi. I have arrived (or rather, returned) with the onslaught of "old-regulars-temporary-lurkers-turned-regulars-again" upon news of a new MK coming very skoon (I had to sneak the obligatory "K" in there somewhere, and I wanted to surprise people. Ya know, keep people on their toes, not go for the obvious, cheap-and-easy win). I haven't been here, at least not consistently, in a very long time. This is my first thread in a while.
Now to the point. I have been plagued with an issue I'm guessing (or maybe hoping) all of you have been plagued with in the past.
I am in desperate need of new music.
Now, instead of starting a thread asking for people to give ME new music, which would be rather boring, I have decided to create a thread specifically designed to give new music to ANYONE who is desperately searching for a way out of the "same-old-music-hurts-my-brain" wasteland.
One thing I'm sure many of the people stuck in said wasteland understand is that we are not simply looking for any kind of music we have not heard before. Sure, sometimes that's really great and all, but other times we just want something new that still suits our basic tastes. And I think we can all agree that the Spotify/iTunes suggestions are pretty off-base when it comes to similarity with an artist you enjoy. "You like Tears for Fears? That must mean you want 80's hits!! Forget about the core aesthetics of Tears for Fears' music, you just LOVE 80's hits!!"
TL,DR SPOT (for you busy folks who are in a hurry, of course).
I have a point here. I'm trying to say this is not just a "post music you like that others might" thread. There are SOME rules.
If you are looking for new music that you want to be somewhat similar in style to the music you already love, then you must explain (as clearly as possible) what exactly it is that you love about your current selection. Then, if some kind soul stumbles upon your post and says "I have a song that this forum user might just love, based on their current music tastes!" They should go ahead and post that song!
If you want something entirely new, crazy, amazing, mind blowing that you have never heard before, or similarly, if you want to flirt with a musical genre you usually don't care for, you can ask for that too! Then, ya know, kind soul, stumbles upon post, links you to song. It'll be lovely.
To prevent this post from being any longer, I'll hold off on my musical tastes for now. It's probably better to see what other members think of this idea before I start bumping my own thread, anyway.
Thanks,
j4a8c1k3

I'm always on the look out for something new to enjoy, but I'm not seeking anything in particular right now, so I'm gonna latch on to the sharing aspect and throw a track out.
BANKS - Brain has been the first song to really grab me this year. I get the sense BANKS is gonna be one the sounds of 2014 -- if she isn't already. I've dabbled in a couple of other tracks, but this is the one so far. Not sure what to compare it to. It's contemporary, but with its own edge.
In the spirit of exploring new music, really hope to see more folks getting on board for the MKO 365 song challenge! If you miss a day you can always catch it up. Great way to find & share music. Don't forget there's a favourite artist thread, as well.

I love all kinds of music and this band I recently discovered is pretty good IMO. They are a math rock group i believe? Labels are getting so odd these days i don't even try, but it is nice electronic, experimental, alternative-esqu music. The band is called The Speed of Sound in Seawater This next one is Jonny Craig's newest band. Jonny used to sing for Dance Gavin Dance, Emarosa, and then he had his solo career, but now he has a new band. He's kind of a dick, but his music is pretty good. His new band is called Slaves

I'm reluctant to call it "new", just because the album dropped early in 2013, and was a bit of an event unto itself. Never the less, the single-a-year video extravaganza has culminated with the recently released fourth in the series: Woodkid - The Golden Age.
Of the four videos from The Golden Age, it's probably my least favourite. 2011's Iron set a pretty high bar, in that respect. Iron may still be the best of the lot. The Golden Age is a fantastic song, though. I prefer the composition of the album version. The video has the unique and entrancing intro sequence of Max Richter's Embers, though. So that's well worth a look!
If you don't know Woodkid, I strongly suggest investigating The Golden Age album in its entirety. It's a great, epic Baroque pop album. A little bit of a second coming of Rob Dougan, but the Frenchman clearly has more staying power than the Aussie. It's too late to say Woodkid's about to blow up, but if you don't know him already, you will in time.

Mezko - Speak European
Can't say I know a lot about it, but I heard this last week, and its stuck with me. Kinda stunned it only has 300 odd views on YouTube. Great pulsing, sexy track. Aussie lo fi rock. Check it out. See if it sticks with you, too.

The Lemons - Lemoncita
This was on the MKO feed a couple of days ago for its UMK3 Scorpion cameo. High on the spazzy meter, but also a pretty damn infectious retro shimmy. If your sensibilities can withstand the junky GIF video, it might worm its way into your head, too.

Not sure it can be called "new" but it's awesome:

M83 - In The Cold I'm Standing
Heard this recently. Thought it was pretty good. Not gonna be for everyone, but might be worth a listen.

Museum of Love - The Who's Who of Who Cares
This caught my ear over the weekend. A bit of a sound pastiche, really. I'm hearing little references to Bowie's Fashion, a brassy vein of Hunters and Collectors - Talking to a Stranger, a splash of Talking Heads in the finish. I think there are probably lots of other specific songs you could cite. Interesting little wander off the beaten pop track.

Adrian Lux - Teenage Crime
This caught my ear this morning. Don't love it, but the vocal hook got me. It's from 2011, but I don't think I've heard it before. Might be new on import. If anyone's missing poppy dance music, it's nice to know it's still frolicking free in the fields of Sweden.

Great track from the Lost Themes album. There's a whole thread about it, and a whole album to stream, so go check it out and talk about how amazing it is!

Jean-Michel Jarre & M83 - Glory
Mostly caught my eye because it was new music by Jean-Michel Jarre. Been hearing it on-and-off for the last few weeks and it's growing on me.
Starts slow, but builds to a big electro anthem. If I had to guess, I'd say the anthemic swell is the convergence of divided efforts by Jarre and M83. There's a great, simple, soft Jarre sequence in amongst the harder contemporary sound, which I appreciated.
Video's well worth a look, too. Spoilers: there's arse.

Daniel Johns - Going on 16
Never quite sure how I feel about Johns. This one's a bit of an ear worm. The video compiles 43 individually animated 5 second segments into a single whole. Definitely worth a look, as well as a listen.

Melanie Martinez- Dollhouse
If you love catchy songs with morbid lyrics this one's for you. Her debut album "Crybaby" is so good, if you get a chance listen to the whole thing, but "Dollhouse" is the first single so it's good to start there. My favorite off of the album is Teddy Bear, but it's really hard to choose because they're all so good. Also the whole album is available for free on youtube.

Max Richter - Path 5 (delta)
Really psyched about this one! From Richter's new album Sleep - which is an eight hour concept album designed as a lullaby to put you down. It's eight hours like the average good sleep. I'm enjoying it too much to sleep. Just good ambient music, modern classical.

Interesting mix. Sydney producer Corin infuses synth with an Asian sound to create the first single from a forthcoming Danish album. Great, chill track. (Video doesn't do much for me).

Sui Zhen - Take It All Back
Nice mellow female vocal. Couple of months old now. Every time I see the video I feel like something terrible has happened to someone. It's the kind of mundane that feels like it's hiding something awful. Nice song.

Rose McGowan - RM486 [NSFW]
Kept putting this one off. Saw a few snippets when it dropped, but I only just caught the whole clip last night on TV. I thought I wanted to give it some air to avoid thinking about all the BS, but now I'm not sure if you can, should, or if it's better with all the hullabaloo in mind.
I definitely like the sound, but I've got a general problem with the lyric content.
The Blade Runner lines are pretty on-the-nose, and there's not enough going on in the rest of the track to pick up the slack. On the other hand, McGowan's transitioning from the Hollywood system we identify her with, so dropping lines from a movie has some extra cache. The quote itself lands with a thud, but when you remember that BR was a commercial flop before it was a cult juggernaut, that's a more interesting choice from a starlet presently bucking the system.
I don't really know how I feel about it, but I'm interested to see what she does next.

Protest The Hero
Musically just on a different level for technical skill. Luke is amazing to say the least. Impossible to follow at first and I hated the band but after letting them grow on me, I truly believe they are simply the best in almost every way.

Woodkid - Volcano (Live)
Not really his best work, but the presentation is always interesting to see. If you head to Woodkid.com right now, you can download a free studio version of Volcano (mp3). So if you're interested or enjoying it - now's the time!
If you haven't dabbled in Woodkid, you'll want to explore more. The Golden Age album is absolutely killer. Probably the only 'must hear' artist I can think of at the moment, as a result.
