The new Doctor averages more than 2 million viewers during his maiden run

The mystery is solved: Peter Capaldi is a hit as the Doctor.

The first season of “Doctor Who” with Peter Capaldi in the title role wound up being the highest-rated season of the series on BBC America, the network said Monday. Overall, the season, which featured Jenna Coleman guest-starring, averaged 2.035 million viewers in Live + 3 Day ratings, which take into account viewers who tuned in for the original telecast and over the next three days.

This year’s Christmas special, “Doctor Who: Last Christmas,” also fared well, drawing 2.312 million viewers with its Christmas Day airing and racking up 2.616 million viewers in Live + 3 numbers.

That's quite good. A lot of you are Americans. Did you watch the Christmas special? Do you have words to communicate your impressions of said special?

I thought it was alright. A bit thin, with a few curious moments breezed over -- why were the dream crabs interested in all those other people? Good lark, though. Some funny gags. I got a kick out of the tangerine jokes.

You may or may not have heard there's a new Doctor coming...

WHAT! A WOMAN! PARUMPH! EGADS THIS EXECRABLE TURN OF EVENTS HAS CAUSED MY COUNTENANCE TO ABRUPTLY CHANGE, THUS DROPPING MY MONOCLE INTO MY CHAMPAIGN!


In all seriousness though, I think we all saw this coming for a multitude of reasons;

1. They caught shit for not casting a woman/person of color for 12.
2. Capaldi (despite my love of 12) was not appealing to the kiddies
3. The majority of recent scripts have been rubbish and they need to drum up some attention.

BBC was between a rock and a hardplace in terms of casting, and they'd only catch more shit with a white male (Hell they're catching a little bit of shit because Whittaker is white).

That being said, they made the right choice. They could have gone with a more recognizable name or a younger person, but they went with an actress that I believe earned the role of the Doctor.

Jodie Whittaker was phenomenal on Broadchurch, I remember the first time I saw her break down on that show and I was enamored at how brilliant a performance she gave. She is a solid pick.

I'm sincerely going to miss Capaldi, though. He deserved a stronger run with better scripts. His performance, even with the worst of scripts, was always entertaining. I'll probably never forget the nonchalant way he said "Maybe I'm in Hell. That's okay, I'm not scared of Hell, it's just Heaven for bad people."

I will miss 12.
