Here, discuss anything Super Mario Bros. related or otherwise related to the Mario franchise specifically. Ne, Wii U, old experiences, Kart, and PAry, all discussable here!
I'll start off with a basic rant;
Rainbow Road on the SNES version of Mario Kart is, in my opinion, the hardest game race course EVER> I have never played a harder one. Unless you count Battle Toads- you know what? It's harder than Battle Toads. Rainbow Road is freakishly hard in most cases, then add a good few more holes in and add to the mechanics and let's piss some kids off!

I have to say that Mario is definitely my favorite franchise of all time; I'm a pretty die-hard fan. It's not just because Super Mario Bros. is widely regarded as the game that saved the industry; I don't disagree with that, but I think there's just a lot more to it than that. I like the simplicity and creativity that goes into each game, with the exception of a few like the NSMB series (in short, I think they're mostly rehashes that don't really do anything new at all).
I've been getting kind of worried lately, though. The latest mainstream game was Super Mario Galaxy 2 (I'm not counting the "new" series or any other side-games). The first Super Mario Galaxy had this epic feel from the very beginning. It had the same old plot (Princess Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser) but the way they did it actually felt really sweet. Bowser seemed to be an actual threat because he could destroy the entire universe (which nearly happens at the end). It also introduced Rosalina, who in my opinion is the best Mario character released in recent time (to find a character on her level you'd have to go back to the NES era, imo).
Then the sequel rolled around. The story is like a toned down version of the first one. Instead of a truly evil Bowser who wants an empire in the center of the universe, we get a giant Bowser who wants a giant cake. Why is he giant? I guess to make him more menacing because his personality doesn't do it here. And instead of Rosalina, we get Lubba, a tubby, purple, Patrick Star ripoff. Don't get me wrong, the game had amazing new levels and music, but it felt lacking without that epic feel of the first one. I don't even want to get started with the NSMB stories; I'll just say they're horrible.
But I have high hopes for the next Mario game. I mean the next "Real" Mario game; not the eighth installment of New Super Mario Bros or Mario Party 20, but an all new true 3D platformer. We've got a brand new console that needs some real games to get people buying, and the team behind Galaxy will be working on it. What more needs to be said? Apparently they'll be showing it off at E3 along with the next Mario Kart game. I think it'll be amazing. Hopefully I'll come back to this thread over the Summer, look at this post, and nod in agreement with that last statement.

Rainbow Road N64 is the best Rainbow Road so far. MKDD's comes close too. The one for the DS is the worst. I hate that one.
Baby Park is my favorite track.
I think Mario Circuit had some good tracks. I wish they would had brought to the Wii as Retro Track.
- Cheeseland
- Ribbon Road
- Yohis' Desert
- Sunset Wilds
- Cheep Cheep Island(or beach)

The N64 version is definitely my favorite Rainbow Road, and Double Dash was a close second. Then Mario Kart 7 came out and its Rainbow Road really gave Double Dash's a run for its money. I think in the end it's better, and I think the game in general really did a lot right. I'm thinking it might be the best Mario Kart since 64. Those three games had the best music too.

Mario is a legend!
When I was a kid, my uncle would play Super Mario World on the SNES for several days on end.
Due to the lack of efficient game saving in those times, he'd simply leave the game on whenever he'd go to sleep, to avoid losing his progress.

How do we not already have a Mario thread!?
Many a glorious hour i spent in my youth playing SMB on the NES. Discovering all the secret warp pipes, learning the timing for jumps, knowing what enemies will turn up where and, all importantly, trying to stomp them all.
I totally love the kart franchise and only wish MK7 was available for wii too.
This is the only Mario inspired tattoo i have so far, the camera's flash kinda makes the colours look washed out and crappy but i assure you all it is awesome. it's on my inner right calf.

Rainbow Road, though being the hardest racecourse in history, is definatelt the funnest ever invented. And the way the newer versions keep it hard with the new abilities also interests me. It's a cycle.

Agree that Luigi is the man, but disagree on SMB3 being greater than SMW. After all, SMB3 was just a play. Never was canon. Infact, http://www.geekologie.com/2010/01/conspiracy-super-mario-3-never.php

How does making a game canon make it better?

I never knew the Mario games even had a canon

I like the idea that it's all just a stage show and Mario and Bowser are just really bros. Which is why they always invite him to play Tennis and race.
I have nothing against World. Obviously it's an amazing game and I really like the secret level stuff in particular, but aside from the secret stuff it doesn't have a whole lot over SMB3. Less powerups. Arguably lesser music. I definitely prefer the art style in 3 as well. The 16-bit version in All-Stars looks a lot better than World does if you ask me. The colours are nicer.
I've been playing a lot of 3D Land lately. It's a really great game once you get to the second half. I've heard it's pretty similar to Galaxy as far as level design goes. I need to get my hands on that game.

SMB2 was incredible! I loved the more logic-based puzzle layout, and the introduction of several now-essential and beloved characters like Shy Guy, Birdo, Snifit, Spikey (which looks like nasty anal beads - next time you look check for yourselves!)
I also was completely blown away by the paper Marios - anyone else agree?

I'm disappointed with myself that I never completed Paper Mario: TTYD. What color Yoshi did you guys get from your egg? When I first played it I think I got a baby blue Yoshi. I forgot what I named him though..

I timed it to get a black Yoshi.
