Well... I liked the movie, but some critics fell that it left them empty hoping that the secret of the "Creatures" was better used.

I kinda agree with them in a way. M. Night Shaylaman got the whole villane, people and creatures nicley, but the end result was something more subtle and muted than what I expected. But I give the director a pass on this, a somewhat lackluster but still interesting movie.

He gives us the characters and setting that is done well. The villane people are that of a mid-1900's era and move about with content as the noises coming from the forest freezes them for moments.

I think that The Village could have been something more if the 'secret' was something totaly different. What was presented towards the end was something really didn't fit with the first half of the film. Although, it did answer some questions about the underlying secret the elders were keeping, it felt out of place with what was already givein to the audience.

I think the revelation about the "creatures" is what takes the movie in another directon than where it probaly should have gone. The part where the villagers run to their houses to hide from them and when they appeared was really a device to steer the audince in to thinking that the movie was about the "Creatures" crossing into the village out of anger. I was wrong!

Now that I think about it, I kinda know why he had the events play out as they did. In Signs, he didn't reveal the aliens fully, because we were invested with the family. Here with The Village he throws us a "2-3 change up" to the inside when we were expecting a slider down the middle of the plate. They look similar when it comes out of the pitchers hand, but when the batter notices that the spin of the ball is wrong he's frozen in his place.

The Village is not what it seems to be and not what I was expecting while being what I was expecting at the same time. Shaylaman uses the undertones of secrets to bait us in while still effectively uses a twinge of supernatural elements to keep us invested. I think the use of the scerets that the elders hid was a bad move.

It's not that the premise was bad, but it eventually takes you somewhere other than where you were you thought you were being taken earlier in the film. It's not a bad movie and to be honest, the revelation is a damn interesting one at that. Close to the end, Shaylaman tried to take the movie into steer the movie into another direction while still maintaining the story and I didn't mind that. The direction where the story ended up was an interesting one even if it didn't seem plausable.

I think the flaw was that even though the direction shift was tied to the 'secrets' of the elders, it didn't feel as if it fit the early parts of the movie. IF anything, the movie would have worked better if he stayed with the "Creatures" and made the secret about them and the village more centalized together instead about the inclusion of the elder's past before the village was founded.

Overall Shalyman knows how to scare an audience. He'll never let that go. I think The Village was an idea that should not have veered away from what he gave us in the first 3/4 of the film. It's a real good suspensefull movie that tapers off in the last quarter of the film.

It not a bad movie, but flawed. However, I still say that it's worthy of being seen in theaters. But I'd say once the revelation is revealed, pay close attention to everything that's given to you from then on. There are some questions left unanswered that'll make you want to get the dvd to find them out.

My rating for The Village: C+

I'd never thought I'd be giving Shalyman such an average grade after seeing his previous work, but I guess not everyone can be perfect. wink

I'm Gho....

Oh yeah!!! BTW, since the site was down, I didn't get a chance to review Bourne Supremacy! I'll be brief. If you've seen it, then you know how damn good it is. If you haven't, it's that rare sequel that's better than the first movie, only it's really 3 times as better! wow

C'est tout!

I'll reply...

I just saw The Village. I thought it was a decent movie but I was left confused a bit at the end.

Me and my friend we sitting next to some rude ass teenagers. They would laugh at the stupidest shit and One girl had the nerve to even be on the fucking PHONE during it. It rang, she picked up and started talking! Then we have these fucking girls in front of us who would jump and scream at every little scene! Its a good thing THEM screaming scared us more than the actual parts of the movie. And since when is fucking Text Messaging COOL to do during a movie? Turn your fucking Phones off! I used to not have a cell phone like a month ago but now that I have one at least im fucking smart with it. Ah! Maybe if these little dipshits weren't dropped off by their dumb ass mothers to see a movie that I want to see MAYBE.. THEN MAYBE would I have understood The Village. I'm sure they explained the questions I still have about it.

This is EXACTLY what AVP is gonna have. Me and my friend looked at each other and we both knew it.

No Respect.

I saw it, and I really was dissapointed. It wasnt bad, but it was not what I was expecting. I just feel let down. I would have rather had a different story fold out. Oh well, it was unique. Better than some movies I have seen in the theatre.

See that's why me and my friedns tell teensagers who are loud before the movie starts to quiet the fuck down when the lights go low. And we friggin mean it when we say it too! Maybe you and your friend should do that next time. Either that or make an example out of one of them and kick one of them in the throat. It gets results and it quiets those little bastards down for sure!;-D

Tsk tsk ghostdragon... it's back to anger management for you...sigh after 3 months of progress.... I like 'th village' I'm saying I'll like it more when I see it again AT HOME when I'll really break down the movie... like 6th sense... his best... or unbreakable...a thriller once I understood the gist of it or signs his WORST but the theme of the village was moody, and the heavy twist at the end should have settled in better...

good review ghost, ghostdragon...

It's my favorite Shyamalan movie. I thought the twist and how everything reverted back was utterly unique and brilliant. I give it a 9 out of 10.

This movie was horrible. It was slow throughout the whole movie, and it isn't suspensful at all, maybe like one or two parts, thats it. And the previews make it sem alot diferent from what the movie really is.

I saw the village the other night and i gotta say i was left with mixed emotions... i liked the movie but i would have liked it even more if it wasnt so hyped up as something that it wasnt, i went expecting to see a horror movie with a twist, instead i got a drama with a twist... i dont really think u could consider this movie a horror, there just wasnt enough of the horror element there, it was more of a drama about the villagers lives to me and that became even more evident towards the end of the movie... the movie has 3 big secrets in it, the first i thought was revealed wayyyy to soon, the other was predictable and the 3rd was faaarrrrr from expected in this type of movie... i liked the ending and how it turned out i just wished that they would have advertised the viallge for what it was for rather than make it look like something its not to draw in the masses, i believe that Schamalyns name would have done that alone...

u should feel special Ghost, i went and saw this movie as quickly as i could so that i could read ur review without any spoilers and post my own wink

i give The Village a C. I was just so dissapointed w/how the trailers and such misleaded people to thinkin this was gonna be scary. it was anything but scary, alot of talkin, and wat really pissed me off was that the creatures were bogus. i mean the story was well thought out, and had great actors, but the fact that the movie was very misleading i give it a C.

I saw this movie opening day and it was not what i expected. I thought the movie was set in the past but it wasnt. The creatures look like E.T. fused with giant procupines. The movie was never exciting but it was never boring. They dont send a perfectly healthy male into the forest but they will willingly send a blind girl. My friend said the retard was nightcrawler from xmen 2, is that true? And dd any of you discover what color the girl saw when she looked at the guy/?

From what I've seen, most of the people who didn't like the movie were either upset that the creatures weren't real, or upset because it wasn't a hack and slash movie. Of course, I'm sure there are others who disliked it for different reasons.

I personally like psychological movies more than straight up horror, so I enjoyed the movie. Wasn't the greatest, but still rather good.

I think anything Shyamalan does is straight up crap. He hypes the entire story up for an absolute bullshit ending. I wouldn't be surprised if in another epic the ending is "and then they all woke up."
