Pretty normal for the lull between games, that's always how it's been. I wouldn't say it's all that low though.

This. Whenever a new game comes around we grab 5-10 new regulars and the rest just disappear until the next new game is announced. MKVita isn't really bringing anyone in though.

Yet after each game the same amount of regulars leave when they find about Wonder Woman, Freddy Krueger and the likes being involved in MK. Although, many of those protestants tend to come back no matter what.

The harshest dropoff happened August-November 2011, which could be attributed to various factors. You can draw your own conclusions about what might have been happening to the site around that time.
It's probably worth distinguishing between forum traffic and site traffic.
Regular forum posters are an important and visible part of the community, particularly at the farthest point between new game releases, but less communicative visitors are also a huge and just as active part of things, sometimes moreso. Site traffic is actually up this month, for what it's worth.
In cold terms, site readers are probably a little less likely to have biases like a perceived amount of traffic, and are possibly more receptive to content than forum regulars. Forum traffic is discernably up in the last few months, but distractions like this maybe sometimes get the better of forum posting. I think it would always be suggested that, at a time like this, users consider looking in the various forums and getting involved in some of the on-going topics that are out there, site-provided, or otherwise.
At the end of the day, the name of the game is MK.
Get used to actually keeping your eyes peeled to the site update feed at the top left of the page (or on twitter), check out the front page from time to time, be aware of some of the things going on, and get involved! Stuff's happening! There are interested people! Get out of the rut and flykick something -- good business for everyone.

Nothing has happened.
It's all the same. Visiters only visit the General Discussion forums and the rest are pretty much dead.
I check every forum every 4 hours almost and there are never any new posts or updates aside from the general discussion. Everyone is trying their best to bring in new people (Or so I think), and it would help if people would visit the other forums.
I thought this was established already. I guess not. I wish it wasn't this way. There are still people like me and you who care about the gameplay and functional's of this game. Wish there were more people other then the regulars.
Oh well.

As soon something interesting happens, like a new Mortal Kombat being announced, this forum will be full of members again. But in the mean time, expect the forums to be dead.

I wouldn't be quite so gallows about it, but if every person who comes through the forums on a daily basis posted once in MK forums, the conversation would probably flip pretty quickly. There are definitely some bad habits around the place, and there's definitely a natural decline, but people are here and stuff is happening. New users are usually pretty timid, so the turn around of any new culture we might foster is going to be a gradual, organic process. It's nice to see new names are still coming in, though, to go with the familiar faces.
We're trying somewhat to lead from the front page, where a lot of traffic comes in and intersects with the forums. We streamlined the forums and are piping content into each of them fairly regularly. We've had daily updates throughout April, in a lot of areas, and are trying to ensure we're keeping a high minimum of quality. Getting forum peeps out of their rut and aware and back in the swing of looking and participating is part of the process, and something site traffic doesn't seem to struggle with.
If some of that awareness and enthusiasm can come out of these This Site posts that started coming into style late last year, that'll be a cool thing. None of us get much out of moaning when talking MK is as simple as talking some MK. Heads out, boots in, to paraphrase the t-shirt.

Hopefully in due time MKO will re-assign one of it's loyalest members, to the staff team and I can actually help draw some traffic in. Yes I specialize in art, "But i'm a people person. I work with the goddamn customers!" - Office space lol but really. I'd hope to see myself back on in a possible near future. Even if my luck here has been bad, I've always been loyal and never copped a tantrum and ran. MKO is still my home even if some may not welcome me with open arms.
I can't say much about the email department but it's quite common to introduce a site to a friend by your own computer, frankly. I just checked that TestYourMight has 350 people online as we speak (members: 115, guests: 235). Mortal Kombat Online is still considered a reliable source for all things Mortal Kombat and sites like TYM and X360A rely on MKO often.

MINION: Kintaro welcomes you with open arms – four of them! About your concern on rejoining the staff/stick/cane, I have coincidentally thought of volunteering for the task being a first-timer, to give more justice to the MKOmmunity and to make this a tad better place, if I'll have that time.

I honestly agree with you Mick. I hope i've done well to bring some new members to MKO and hopefully will bring more in the future. I 100% agree with you, just so you know. I was just saying. I still love you guys. lol. I've been around here so long it's grown on me. I try my best to be the first on things, but I always get here late. I think our small little community will continue to grow and hopefully some updates and advertising will bring some more enthusiastic members in, to someday make us as big as a site like TYM. I know for a fact back in the day, this site was pumping! I really wanna thank you guys because when I joined here I had the worst fucking grammar, punctuation, etc. I then came back around 3 years back and have been here almost every day. I'm very glad I stumbled upon here because I was looking for a Mortal Kombat Online game. Oh, how this website showed up every time I searched it. Certainly it wasn't what I was looking for, but In the long run I'm glad it was. <3
@zmoke, TYM has been great for us. Every time we get a lead on an article @STORMS posts it sometimes on the front page. They really are helping us out a lot. We should thank them.
@MINION, you've been around here long enough man. You'd be perfect for a mod. Just' sayin. Your a great guy too.. Your the one who got me into competitive MK with my 8 hit combo Kabal, LOL. Seriously though. Your fucking awesome man.

We're actually a larger website than TYM, in terms of traffic and such. They obviously have a strong presence in a specific and active part of the community, though. In terms of goals, it would be nice to restore more of that enthusiasm to the MKOmmunity, even if the traffic is already there.

Yeah, definitely. I really would like to see some old timers come back and contribute and some newcomers to see what this website is like. I think even if some people from the other websites could give this one a try. It would help out a lot imo.

How has it exactly been helpful to us, advertisement and the news aside?

People who are motivated by greed and pride to reach the staff don't usually lead to good results, sometimes to horrible results just. In reality the assignment of a moderator doesn't change your time here that much – other than giving a few new responsibilities – though it does give you a bit more influence and authority. You can do the most things as a Mortal/Warrior etc. just as well I believe. Nephrite is a good example of a righteous moderator by the way, he has definitely got his things right.

There's a cycle to these things, I've found.
At some point, people who've been around for a long time will reach a point where they either no longer connect to the new blood populating the site or simply don't have much else to say. They've had all the same types of conversations and given to the community what they had to give. It doesn't have to be a bad thing. It doesn't have to make people bitter. But it is a reality that every one of us will face. Lord knows I don't post nearly as much as I used to. Seriously, sometimes I'm embarassed by how little I've had to say.
MKO is a pretty old site in Internet terms and has a lot of history behind it with many people who've come and gone and tons of threads that bring back great memories for the people who were there for them. And I'm certain that at some point it'll happen again with a new rush of users who have a fresh style and youthful interest in the hobby that many "old timers" have since outgrown. Whether or not and old timer still feels a connection to that is up to the individual.
What I think people are seeing when they qualify the site as being "different" or "slow" or "dumb" or "boring" is essentially the gradual shifting of cycles as reflected by their own changing outlook. You never see new users making these claims. Because to the new user, everything is still fresh and interesting. That Scorpion thread you've seen 100 times? They haven't participated in it or said what they have to say on the subject. Meanwhile, you've seen hundreds of posts on the subject and made hundreds yourself. Circle of life kinda stuff.

@zmoke I honestly feel like they have. That's really the only way they have been helping us, but it's enough to be honest.
@Tony, really this guy is dead on. I couldn't have said it better then him. I know EXACTLY what he is talking about.. This guy is a fucking hero.. I feel the same way. Really. Thank you for posting that.

It gets kind of depressing seeing as how sometimes one other person is online at the time. It's so lonely. Still waiting for MK10 so that things like the Kreate a Kharacter kontest can happen again and thus so can the role-playing thread. A shame that the role-playing thread died as it was getting to the good parts.
