this worries me and im a huge xbox player

The next-generation Xbox may not only be accompanied by a new and improved Kinect, but may actually require the sensor to function. Kotaku has published an exhaustive report about Microsoft's forthcoming console, lending credence to many prior rumors about the system's performance and features, but revealing new information about how the system may interact with Kinect, as well as its capacity for running multiple simultaneous games and apps.

According to the site's source, SuperDaE, who you might remember as the source of PlayStation 4 devkit rumors last month and attempting to sell a Durango devkit on eBay last year, every Xbox 720 will ship with the next-generation Kinect and will require the sensor to be connected in order to function. The company is apparently building Kinect functionality into the framework of the system, using the sensor to identify players and even accept Siri-like voice commands. This marks a bold new push for Kinect integration, which has been slow-growing for the Xbox 360. As we've heard in the past, Kotaku says that the emphasis on Kinect will come paired with substantial performance improvements, with the sensor capable of tracking six simultaneous players and detecting even the smallest of gestures and facial expressions.

SuperDaE has also revealed information about how the system stores and installs games. Unlike the Xbox 360, the next Xbox will ship in only one configuration with 500GB of storage, allowing players to install games from discs. Using its powerful new internals, the Xbox 720 will be capable of installing games as you play them, limiting lengthy load times.

Finally, the source claims that the new hardware will support multitasking. The system will make use of "suspend" and "constrained" states to run multiple games at once, making it possible to pause one game and launch another. The same goes for apps, such as social networking tools and video software, which currently require fully closing down another program.

It remains unclear when Microsoft will reveal the system publicly, but with Sony's own next-gen system debut just over a week away, we can't help but think it's coming soon. In the meantime, check out our roundup of all of the big next-gen Xbox rumors in the Xbox 720 wiki.

But if he would've posted it in the Drive-by and everybody started talking about it, then it would've merited it's own thread.

Paradox.

The current gen systems are more for entertainment reasons right now. Netflix has really driven that point home.

This was obvious. It's my understanding that the current Kinect was gutted before release and was originally going to be a lot better with more features. I've never used one, but the general consensus seems to be that it's cool tech that just doesn't work as well as it should, and the games are just shovelware trash. If the system is designed from the ground up with an updated Kinect in mind, I'm sure it will be better. It might feel less tacked on.

Again though, rumours are rumours (And Kotaku is shit). I'm not a fan of the direction the consoles seem to be heading but it's hard to really tell until the official announcements how things will go. Like I said, PC gaming is where the future's at. I just hope the next generation will stop holding it back so much so we can see some real innovation with the actual games instead of magical media center crap.

I don't think it's fair to say you won't buy it because of Kinect, yet at least. There's no way the thing would be as dysfunctional as the current gen Kinect is. That would be suicide. It's also not like it would be an extra fee; if it's required, it'll be in the box and part of the retail price.

And Xbox 720 is the stupidest freaking name ever. It already has the code name Durango ffs.

I don't know about you, but I don't turn my 360 on in order to get up, act like a fool, and struggle with half-functional motion equipment. I have a Wii for that. I want to sit down, relax, and enjoy my games. They can't possibly require Kinect for the EA Sports titles and Halo. That would be ridiculous.

Whoa whoa whoa. I get skulled for telling him to not fill our General Discussion board up when he can just post it in the drive by? I'm usually a nice guy, but fuck you to whoever did that.

That's doubtful, yeah. I can't imagine Kinect being a big hit with CoD bros and I doubt Microsoft will try pushing it too far. I mean, I'm sure they will (Because what's E3 without completely embarrassing motion control demonstrations?), but it's not like Halo 5 will be designed to only play with Kinect. It just won't happen.

I don't think "requires Kinect" means that every game will require it or even support it. Extremely unlikely considering the amount of multi-platform titles. This news just means that Kinect will be properly integrated into the machine rather than being a separate add-on. Which means Kinect software has a chance at being taken seriously (And actually functioning properly since they've improved the tech). I've never really been big into the idea of motion control or anything but it's a little silly to think there's zero potential in any of it.

There's some potential to be had if it's done right, just color me skeptical. That's really the point I'm trying to get across.

Everything I am hearing seems pretty expected. I mean, I don't think I know a single person who doesn't have internet. I actually thought about it. It is essential. I wonder how the hell we survived, during ps1. Online integration has become as essential as the game itself, in most cases.

Kinect? Not so big on it. I'm glad it would be bundled, so I have the option. I would never have purchased a Kinect of my own ambition.

I still think Sony is going to hit this one out of the park, compared to Microsoft. Call it a gut feeling. They have learned from their mistakes, hopefully. If they announce a fee for online, to give us quality servers. I will dance for joy.

Wow, most skulls I've seen in a while. Anywho, if it's sold with the console, I've got no problem with it. Then to those who buy it it mentally becomes a piece of the overall system and not an accessory; like a controller.

Imagine we saw dragon points handed out like that.

I'm still thinking about buying a PS3. It's crazy that Wii U is out and the next XBox and PS4 are about to follow suit later in this year.
There was an announcment on the radio the other day, saying the next XBox wouldn't play used games. What is up with that?

I still prefer offline gameplay to be honest, sure, you can play with a lot of people online, but online communities tend to be a bunch of assholes/trolls mostly, I don't find joy playing with people I don't know, only in FPS but I'm not much into those.

sony is doing the same. xbox basicly followed that same formula

imo with the reports of a active online connection i believe they are going digital with digital downloading. im not saying its official but look at the success both platforms had in regards to downloading full games for 20 to 40 bucks on xbl and psn

I just wish they'd ditch all the Youtube and Facebook and Netflix crap from the next Xbox, because all that stuff somehow interferes with my ability to play games on it. The fewer features, the better.
EA: Next-Gen Consoles Unlikely to be Backwards Compatible
"You'll most likely not be able to play with someone on a different generation."

The next generation of consoles are unlikely to support backwards compatibility, according to EA's chief financial officer.

Speaking at a Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference Q&A; session (via Gamasutra), Blake Jorgensen explained that the current generation of consoles still had some mileage left in them as a result.

An important thing to remember is that next-gen consoles will most likely not be backwards compatible.

"An important thing to remember is that next-gen consoles will most likely not be backwards compatible," he stated. "If you [play] multiplayer on a game, you'll most likely not be able to play with someone on a different generation."

Jorgensen went on to explain that sports games would play a large role in keeping current gen consoles relevant, as if the new boxes don't launch until December, that'll be midway through the season so you're likely to keep playing on your PS3 or Xbox 360 until next year.

"Fiscal year 2014 will still be a fairly large gen-three if there's a console business that comes in at the tail end of the year, mainly because a lot of our titles are built around sports calendars... And if a next-gen console doesn't come out until next Christmas, most people won't wait. They'll want to be involved in getting those titles early, because their friends are all playing those titles," he posited. "If they all hold on and continue to play on third-generation, you'll probably not see that box purchase until after the soccer season's over."

Sony and Microsoft still haven't confirmed anything about the next-generation of consoles, but thankfully it looks like we won't have to wait much longer. It's looking likely that the next PlayStation will be revealed a week today while Microsoft will surely spill the beans shortly after, probably around E3.
