- CinemaCon: Warner Bros. Chief Says Ben Affleck's Stand-Alone Batman Movie Is a Go

Kevin Tsujihara appeared Tuesday at the annual gathering of theater owners to tout the studio's upcoming slate, including the stand-alone, which Affleck will star in and direct.

Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara confirmed Tuesday his studio is moving ahead with Ben Affleck's stand-alone Batman movie, which the actor will star in and direct.

The studio mogul touched upon the movie when appearing at CinemaCon, the annual gathering of cinema operators in Las Vegas. He touted the record-opening of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which teams Batman (Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) on the big screen for the first time and launches the DC cinematic universe.

"It set up a great foundation for our DC slate, which includes at least 10 movies through 2020," said Tsuijhara. "I'm also excited to know that we will be working with Ben Affleck on a stand-alone Batman movie."

"He's contracted to do at least Justice League One and Two, so at least three times wearing the cape," Whitesell said, adding, "There's a script that he's written that is a really cool [Batman] idea, so that's out there as an option."

The stand-alone Batman movie has yet to be officially dated, although there's rampant speculation that it will take one of the two slots Warner Bros. recently reserved for two untitled DC films; Oct. 5, 2018, and Nov. 1, 2019. The other could go to Suicide Squad 2.

Will Affleck salvage it or fail in spectacular new ways?

Rumors abound that the stand alone Batman movie will feature most of the major players in Batman's rogues gallery.

*side note* I (against all odds) enjoyed Affleck's Batman and actually prefer solo hero movies, so...I'm on board so far.

Haven't seen BvS, but Affleck is a pretty solid director. Actually has some chops when it comes to directing action (The Town) and dialogue (Argo) and by all accounts he made a solid Batman.

Looking forward!

- Ben Affleck Gives Fans First Look at ‘The Batman’ Villain Deathstroke (Video)

- Deathstroke Will Be Main Villain in Ben Affleck’s Batman Movie (Exclusive)

Ben Affleck wasn’t just teasing: Deathstroke will, in fact, be the main antagonist of the Batman standalone movie he’s directing, TheWrap has exclusively learned from an individual with knowledge of the situation.

Earlier this morning, the actor who plays the Dark Knight posted a cryptic tweet of the new villain walking toward the camera in very cinematic fashion, which sent fanboys into a frenzy of speculation.

Suspicions arose that we would be seeing Deathstroke in the DC Cinematic universe when “Arrow” creator Marc Guggenheim was asked earlier this year why Deathsroke wasn’t returning to the television series. “The character of Slade Wilson is currently tied up in another DC project. Walter is more likely,” he said in a Tumblr post.

Live-action designs haven't been stellar, but it's an interesting pairing.

I wonder if this just increased Deathstroke's chances of returning in I2, which some people thought were decreased by Deadshot's inclusion.

Masks with one eye covered, weapons, mercenaries. I think everybody thinks the characters are similiar when they're starting out, but they soon distinguish themselves pretty quick. No reason at all one should cancel out the other.

- Joe Manganiello Will Play Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s Batman Movie

Batman will face comic book villain Deathstroke, played by “True Blood” star Joe Manganiello, in Ben Affleck’s first solo movie playing the Dark Knight.

DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns confirmed the casting in his first interview discussing his new role overseeing Warner Bros.’ movies based on DC Comics characters.

He declined to comment on whether Deathstroke has a cameo in “Justice League,” which is currently shooting in London.

Johns also declined to say when the Batman movie will be released, although the earliest it could likely hit theaters is 2018.

Manganiello strikes me as a pretty decent choice.

Zack Snyder’s “Justice League” sequel will shoot later than expected, as to make way for filming on the Ben Affleck-led solo Batman film. Ahead of “Justice League 2,” Snyder will shoot the long-in development thriller “The Last Photograph.”

Seems to be careening toward a 2018 release.

- Ben Affleck’s Batman Solo Film Confirmed for 2018 Release

The Dark Knight will land in theaters sometime in 2018. Speaking to Deadline, Warner Bros.’ former President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production Greg Silverman dropped big news about Ben Affleck’s solo outing in “The Batman.”

“Then in 2018, there is a second ‘Fantastic Beasts’ film, and ‘Ready Player One’ feels like an ambitious movie by the world’s best filmmaker, Steven Spielberg, that will set the world on fire. There is ‘Aquaman’ with James Wan, and ‘Scooby Doo’ will be a huge launch and then there is ‘LEGO Ninjago.’ And then there is Ben Affleck’s ‘Batman,'” he revealed when speaking about the studio’s upcoming projects.

Of course, since it’s still so far off, such a date is always subject to change. Earlier today, Affleck revealed that shooting on the film wouldn’t even begin until spring 2017, so there’s plenty of time for schedules to move.

The word "confirmed" gets thrown around a lot. Subject to change.

- Ben Affleck Will Not Direct ‘The Batman’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Ben Affleck has decided to step down as director of “The Batman” and remain on as a producer and star of the project.

Affleck is still on board to play the superhero, but sources close to the talent said Affleck and Warner Bros., after discussing how to best make the film possible, came to the decision together.

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” Affleck said in a statement. “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

Sources say this decision was solely made based on what’s best for the project and had nothing to do with the recent disappointment of Affleck’s recent directing job “Live by Night.”

Affleck and Warner Bros. will now begin searching for a new director. Sources say there is a shortlist and that “War for the Planet of the Apes” helmer Matt Reeves is among those on the list.

“Warner Bros. fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life,” the studio said a statement.

Read about this the other day. It's a shame they couldn't make this work. Throughout this whole ordeal, Affleck was saying "I'm not gonna do it until I'm ready", all the while WB and everyone attached to the movie not named Ben Affeck is saying, "yeah we're shooting in the spring". Sad.

It adds to the pervasive impression that Warner Brothers are a hot mess, but it might not be all bad. Affleck directing had its intrigue, but a stronger directorial style might be nice. George Miller is an interesting rumor. Freeing Affleck up to focus on the rubber seems like a good plan. They can probably turn out any old guano with confidence. With any luck this sharpens it up, brings in a new voice.

- ‘The Batman’ Has Found a New Director in Matt Reeves

“The Batman” standalone film has found its new director.

Matt Reeves is in early talks to take over directing duties after Ben Affleck stepped down from the role in late January. Affleck will still star in and produce the Warner Bros. movie.

Sources tell Variety that the “Cloverfield” and “War for the Planet of the Apes” director has already committed to helming the superhero pic, although a deal isn’t done yet. Variety first reported that Reeves was high on the list of directors to replace Affleck, but, until recently, meetings were still being held with other filmmakers.

Affleck will still have a significant role in the direction of the film — the first solo movie to star Affleck as the Caped Crusader — after writing the script with Geoff Johns, but he will now have more time to focus on acting.

Doesn't elicit a strong opinion.

- Batman Film Unlikely To Begin Filming Before 2018

When it was announced that Matt Reeves officially signed on to direct “The Batman,” fans of the DCEU let out a collective sigh of relief — finally, the project was moving forward! However, it turns out that this changing of the guard likely means that fans will have to wait longer than expected before they see Ben Affleck’s first solo outing as the Caped Crusader hit the big screen.

According to a pair of tweets from Variety film reporter Justin Kroll, Reeves’ directorial duties for the upcoming “War For the Planet of the Apes” aren’t over just yet, and he’s contractually tied to that project until at least the end of June. Kroll also notes that any casting rumors should be taken with a grain of salt at this point, seeing as Reeves most likely won’t have time to meet with any potential newcomers to the film until at least July.

Matt Reeves starting from square one with "The Batman"

Looks like the script written by Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns will not be used as Reeves has scrapped the story and looks to be doing more of a "noir" driven detective movie. It's rumored he's bringing in his writer from the latest "Apes" movie to write the beginning of what the director hopes will be a trilogy.

And we can't mention Ben Affleck without acknowledging the fact that he may be on the way out. Affleck gave his side of the story at this past weekends "Justice League" panel at SDCC.

Ben's side of the story

Certainly a more level headed account of things, but given the short history of this movie's pre-production hell, WB saying one thing and Affleck as the voice of reason, just kinda seems par for the course.

My take...how in the hell is this happening? Batman should be the one sure thing on DC's entire slate and yet, somehow, Suicide Squad 2 seems to be having an easier time gaining traction. If this continues much longer, it may just be time to break continuity and let the DCEU die in the dumpster fire it seems to be wallowing in. Of course that's not gonna happen as WB no doubt is about to double down after WW gave them a little bit of their swagger back. Bleh.
