- Joker origin movie in the works at Warner Bros. under new DC banner

EW has confirmed that Warner Bros. is developing an untitled movie about the origins of the Joker, with The Hangover helmer Todd Phillips on board to direct and co-write the script with Scott Silver (8 Mile).

The Joker movie is to be the first project produced under a yet-to-be announced banner separate from the continuity of the mainstream DC Extended Universe, which encompasses films such as Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, and the upcoming Justice League. The new banner is intended to bring unique story angles to the studio’s iconic heroes and villains.

Jared Leto most recently played the Joker in last year’s Suicide Squad and is expected to reprise the role in a sequel, but Phillips’ origin film would feature a different actor playing the Clown Prince of Crime.

According to Deadline Hollywood, which first reported the news, Martin Scorsese will produce the Joker film alongside Phillips. A person familiar with the project told EW that Scorsese’s involvement has not been nailed down.

Warner Bros. declined to comment, and representatives for Scorsese did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Why couldn't this ending have happened?

Joker's had so many origins picking one would be a disservice to the character. Not having a set in stone origin just adds to the chaotic nature of him. He's the only character that can get away with not having a set in stone, Hand of God this is actual origin moment. Heck in the Killing Joke he admits that he can't remember it straight. "One minute I remember it one way. The Next minute another way. Then I decided that if I was going to have a History I preferred it to be multiple choice."

Though for the sake of discussion I wonder which one they'll go with:

ACME lab worker who quits his job to become a failed stand up comedian, loses his wife and child in a freak accident, forced by mobsters to help them break into Acme chemicals, encounters Batman gets scared and falls into the chemicals and gets turned into Joker.

A amalgamation of himself and Joe Chill and Jack Napier who kills Thomas and Martha Wayne [from Batman '89 movie]

Jack Napier a Mobster who after injuring Batman's girlfriend he scars Jack's face with a permanent grin before turning him over to said mobsters [the basis for the movie character but tacked on the Joe Chill aspect of the character.
