Modified Sprites
Well, first off, sorry for fucking up your guys' quotes. I haven't posted in a long time and I am still rusty.
Here's my example of adding detail to sprites. A quick 5 minute thing, but I hope you get the idea.

It's a yousendit link because it's a bitmap file for paint - open it up and have a look. The sphere is 4 colours by the way.

Basically, use some lighter and darker shades of colours around the edges like this picture:
