OK, so I'm practicing my painting skills, and I chose scorpion for the subject.
I did the entire body, but I'll just show the head for now.
This is supposed to be Scorpion when he was alive.
Anyway, this is a Digital painting, so I only used color, NO pencil or INK.
So it looks more like an oil painting.
I used Photoshop 7.0 and a wacom tablet.
I'm trying to better my painting skills to get a job at a game company, hopefully Midway.
The game companies keep telling me that I need to do better 2D stuff, so that's why I'm trying to learn how to paint things so they look real.
Or as close to a photo as I can get.
I did this from my head, so I wasn't using any reference, I just did from scratch.
So, have a look, and tell me what you think.
This isn't finished yet, so I can still fix some things.
This is the actual size I was working at.
This is the blown up version, so it's kind of blurry

Right away, I can tell the neck needs to look more real.
Tell me if you see anything that can look better.
Thanks

It really looks great Bleed. The textured hood looks nice too. I think that's where you need to work on as well. It needs a light source that works well with the light source of the mask. The top part of the mask needs some work I think. The shadows from the hood aren't being imposed on that part as it is around the mouth. And if the hood is draped down over the shoulders and around the head, then shadows are going to be needed aroung the neck area.
They say you need to work on your 2D work huh? Well you might wanna try posting some 2D work in the future to get feedback from people as well as getting some prectice in.

I wanted to work on painting realistic eyes, so I went with the living scorpion before MK1.
Thanks for the critiques, It's always great to have a different set of eyes to help out.
If anybody sees something else, please don't hesitate to tell me.

Really nice. Here is what I think you should work on.
-The hood looks flat. Also the texture and colors don't seem to fit, IMO
-The line where the neck and shirt meets is not very clearly defined and too blurry.
-The eyes look great but the stark white light reflection is too white. Maybe tone it down a bit.
-There seems to be a few verticle lines down the pic.
Other than that it looks really good. I think the skin tone is just right.

OK I changed some stuff, added more shadow from the hood, made him less bright, and made the eye shine less intense.
It's looking better now with you guy's help.
I see the vertical lines on his mask now, I'll fix that later.

I was about to comment on the hood, but I see you've already taken care of it - it looks much better now. I think you might want to lose the texture or at least make it less noticeable, as it looks kind of wierd... I mean, it doesn't look like the kind of fabric you'd use for a hood. Also, I think the creases in the mask needs to be lighter; even if the creases are deep, they wouldn't look black if they have light shining directly on them. The creases on the sides of the mask look OK, but the ones on the front look too dark, IMO.
It's a great piece so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of it. I have a question though: Why on earth are you working in such a small resolution?

I wasn't thinking when I started.
That's why it's small.
The entire drawing itself is pretty big though. Good for a full body shot, not a close up.
For the next one I'm gonna work huge, so I can maybe do the pores in the skin.
You are right about the lines on the mask being too dark, I'll work on that. And I'll mess with the texture too.
thanks

It looks better now. You got the shadows where they should be and you toned down the intensity of the mask. I see the difference between the first and the second versions.
Yeah! The texture in the hood needs to be addressed. Maybe lessend by way of resizing the texture so it's smaller. I've seen a pic of Darth Maul with his cloak and I noticed that there was texture in it, but it was so small, it was barley noticable.
I think you're right to subdue the lines in the mask. Now that I look at it, it almost looks like it's not exactly fitted for his face well. Like you know how you would buy a dress shirt and you know it looks good but, you know that you probably need a shirt that fits you well.
LOL! Already have the shoulders drawn I see.

I have him done from head to toe actually.
I just don't want to show the entire thing, so when I submit it to fan art, there is something new to look at.
Here is his hand, again this is the actual working size.
I need to smooth it out some more around the edges, and make the details sharper.

If anybody want's to know how I color in Photoshop.
First, check out these 2 tutorials.
They show how to do digital paintings, like the Scorpion I'm doing.
These 2 tutorials helped me a LOT.
The smudge tool is your friend, keep that in mind when you try to blend colors and shades.
-------------------------------------------
realistic cloth and hair painting with the smudge tool
----------------------------------------------
Hell boy Realistic texture painting for a face
-------------------------------------------
What I did with Scorpion is
1 = I layed out all the flat colors.
2 = with the overlay, soft light, Hard light and vivid light layers, I painted the shadows and highlights using only Black and white with the air brush.
I blended the shades with the smudge tool.
( I do a lot of different shades on MANY different layers, then I set the opacity level to what looks best.)
For choosing the layer styles, I just color with black or white, then I just change the layer style on it and see which one looks better.
I did more than that, but those are the basics.
--------------------------------------------
Here is another tutorial I found last night.
This one is very important, so have a look at it.

Looks like I'm a little late to the conversation.
I've found lately that no matter how good the character looks, until you put their clothes on they just look incomplete. I just finished my first drawing after reading Burne Hogarth's "Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery" and let me tell you, it has made a world of difference. Something about clothing that looks really realistic that makes the character. Even if they are just wearing a t-shirt and jeans, getting the wrinkles, gravity effects, and anchor points down does it.
On yours, looking at the last picture of the head, the wrinkles you added to the hood makes a major difference. You could probably take out the texture and it would look fine. I'd say take it even furthur. The mask looks very nice.
Seeing as how you've already posted the finished product I guess I'll just wait for it before commenting furthur.
This tutorial may help with your texture situation. Looks pretty straight forward but the results are very good for adding a texture to a still. Poly Karbon Displacement Maps

Hey, you hit the nail right on the head.
I was looking for a way to do just that.
thanks a lot.

I changed the texture on the hood.
Made the mask lighter.
Added some highlight on the nose and chin to make it look like there is something under it.
Got rid of the vertical lines on the mask.
And I warped the texture to the wrinkles.
You have to look kind of close to see the difference.

Yeah he's or he was something. I have two of his books and I'm eyeing "Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery" next.
I think that tutorial really helped with the hood Bleed. It looks much better without the vertical lines. The folds look authentic as well.
